  • @Fireworxs2012

Buddy Holly was the music mandudebro. Although given the political climate at the time, I can understand where you are coming from.

  • Thanks for your writing of LONG lyrics... while I can sing all by memory... ;-)

  • 59 years today since the music died

  • @AlienCardKid Buddy Holly - The true "King of Rock and Roll"

  • This is high up in my list of favorite songs ever.I don't know why,but I always get tears in my eyes when I listen to this,it's really meaningful in my opinion.I'll always love this song,I've loved it ever since I was younger.

  • @PAhuntandgame The next song is "We don't start the fire"

  • Nice quality :)

  • Everyone interprets the lyrics in there own way...It's what you make of your life....and the times and places that you heard this song is how you interpret it! AWSOME SONG!!!!!!!!!!

  • 3 idiots drove their Chevies into a wall!

  • what happened to all the good music all u hear on the radio now is lil wayne and other crappy artist why cant they play songs like this and other good classics

  • Awesome quality . Thanks for posting this wonderful old classic !

  • i just figured this song was about the end of the world

  • i just figured this song was about the end of the world

  • What a lot of people just don't get is the lyrics repeat. A song this long and just a few repeats. How many other songs do you know that does that?

  • I love this song a lot and it is still the best! fuck Justin Bieber and today's music

  • Everyone it is poetry that is all nothing else if you think otherwise whilst I respect other peoples opinionits WRONG. Well except for the part about buddy holly and the widowed bride but apart from that these theories are all thing that people who AREN'T Don McLean have thought of. All hes said is that as I said earlier its poetry and that as has been said by Shift4101 that the spouse of the "widowed bride" is Buddy Holly, who died in February of 1959 in a plane crash

  • @pastramiinator - the beauty of poetry is that one can find a lot of meanings in a poem, and whatever meaning they come up with could quite possibly be correct. Now, not all poems possess this Rorschach-like quality, but I think in this case, it's fairly open to interpretation.

However, I still think you nailed it on the head with the Buddy Holly theory.

  • thaks Bro this the loudest best quality video i found ever

    once again thanks

  • @Will102998 Any time :)

  • Is it true that Don McLean refused to play this song live for numerous years because he was taken aback by its success?

  • @lyonslaforet Yessiry.

  • The second coming came and went! Thing is, he took all the great tunes and left us with," WE MUST NOT BE IN PARADISE MAN"

  • this song describes this country today very well yet again. History repeats it self

  • The day the music died = the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry Richardson, Jr.).

  • @JamPantsProductions then its grave was jumped on by Justin Bieber 2008

  • @pastramiinator Justin Bieber's grandparents should have been on that plane

  • /thumbsup

  • Thanks! Great Quality sounds great with my Bose system... : )

  • @TriggerTheT

dude, the quality isnt sufficient to show the potential of a bose.

I use a dynaudio system and if you want to see the real potential of your speaker listen to vinyl ;)

  • Happy 4th of July! :)

  • girl who sang the blues is janis joplin

  • finally one with good sound. thanks.

  • Whatever. It's just a good song.

  • en.wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/The_Day_the_Music_Died

There that's what this song is about

  • damn good song

  • the plane that crashed was named "Americn Pie" ... the other assorted lyrics were based on newspaper events and politics of the day that were seen as the "opposite" of the simpler and happier themes that the musicians stood for

  • shit

  • @WP84P = Loves rap music, and doesn't know real music when they hear it.

  • @zypherstones hahaha yea.. R.A.P = Retards Attempting Poetry

  • @SoulsOfThePure theres more than 1 type of poetry

  • @WP84P i think i know the only disliker now

  • HOW DARE YOU PEOPLE TO WRITE NICK JAGGER??? WTF?

  • @plastilina000 You make no sense. What are you angry about?

  • Comment removed

  • GUYS. The lyrics are open to interpretation. Don't tell other people what it means, you don't know. And if you think you know, your source is wrong. The only thing that is confirmed is that the spouse of the "widowed bride" is Buddy Holly, who died in February of 1959 of a tragic plane crash.

  • @Shift4101 props to you :D

  • @SW2395 The Day the Music Died was when the plane carrying Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Richie Valens (Valenzuela) went down. The name of the plane was The American Pie.

  • @Shift4101 well using common sense tells you that the father, son and the holy ghost was buddy holly, the big bopper and richie valens. And using common sense tells you that this song is about american society losing its innocense. Don't just listen to the music. Hear it.

  • @Shift4101 Really what about Ritchie who was recently married? Mayb it was about him! And u left out the Big Bopper!!!! Buddy didn't just die in that plane crash so get ur facts straight!!! Born in 78 and I seem to know more than U!!!!!!

  • @Shift4101 ...No. There are exact references. If you don't think so then you don't know music history. "The birds flew off with a fallout shelter, eight miles high and falling fast" You think that line is up to interpretation? No it isn't. It could ONLY be a reference to The Byrds who scored their first hit with the song Eight Miles High, and went on to be symbols for the anti-vietnam movement.

  • @Shift4101 ahhhhhhh. shaddddup.

  • @Shift4101 Don't mean to correct you, but each line of this song can be traced to an event in Real Life That Happen And is not open to interpretation. If you want someting that is " open to interpretation." read the bible.

    Dennis

  • @ItzizAustin Lenin came to power in 1919, which is way out of place for this song. Its Lennon

  • Folks come on listen to words....

    (1) John Lennon reads a book on Marx = Beatles are a bunch of commies

    (2) Nick Jagger is the devil (he wore a devil outfit on stage, sung "Sympathy for the Devil")

    (3) No Angel born Hell = Hell's Angels who were Rolling Stones Bodyguards at the Altamont riots

    (4) Jester = Bob Dylan

There are numerous other ones that when you put it into context of that period 1950s-1960s it makes perfect sense. It is all Music related, no JFK, MLK, etc.

  • i'm a high school student who participates in almost every music group in the school. currently, our district is facing a budget crisis and are looking to cut all the extra-curricular music. listening to this song has such an emotional affect on me and it brings me to tears everytime i listen to it. thank you Don for writing such a meaningful song. and i know, even if they do cut every music thing in our school, that music will still continue to be there for me and for all those who love it ♪♫♪

  • Put this in video or in description an youtube shouldn't be able to do anything about the song being under copyright

"Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

  • The jester is Joe Namath of the NY Jets

  • @bartenderadsss what?

  • A clear example of people thinking that a certain lyric can't be a reference to multiple things. It's clearly a reference to both Lenin and Lennon and the two terms are interchangeable.

  • The song was about how the Rolling Stones, and to a lesser extent the Beatles, messed up American music in general.

  • @kepler1000 most def not.

its about the death of many musicians

American Pie was the name of the plane on which Billy Holly lost his life

  • @kepler1000 most def not.

The Stones are American so. . .

its about the death of many musicians

American Pie was the name of the plane on which Billy Holly lost his life

  • @amsfolks

    ???

    1) The Stones and Beatles are both British

    2) It was about Holly, but also about how the British invasions messed up American Rock in Roll, or at least as Mclean saw it. He remembers back to a time before when Elvis, Holly etc...ruled American Music.

    3) Read the lyrics, he talks about Altamont Speedway Free Festival, which was a epic debacle, and about Nick Jagger prancing around in a devil outfit while the place burned down in a riot...

  • @amsfolks the stones are from england

  • it's lenin, as in vladimir lenin. not john lennon haha. vladimir lenin read the communist manifesto by karl marx(which is what that lyric means) and lead the bolshevik revolution in 1917 which started communism in russia.

  • @ChrisLmusic96

No its John Lennon and the Beatles, who flirted with communism. The song has numerous references to both Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who McLean did not like.

  • I am just a teen and I only knew this song by Madonna and I thought it was pretty cool, but while I was watching her video I read that "she killed Don's song" and I was like "who the fuck is this; I like this song!". SO I came here to chek it out and OH MY GOD this song is UnBelievable! I never heard such a thing!

This only brings to the conclusion that Don was right; music really did died a long time ago and I have been fooled all my life.

  • @13DeaMagdala

Yeah this song back in the 70s was quite a big hit and many news organizations and film artists also associate it with 911 the song has such a history .....

  • LOVE THIS its a daily routine for me now the SAME video this one i see it everyday!

  • It's basically a cultural (pop and otherwise) history of the events preceding the apocalypse. Turn on your radio in case you have any doubts about music being dead

  • @ItzizAustin no ur write

  • if anyone of you know history karl marx was the founder of communism

and vladimir lenin was a very powerfull ruler in the soviet union

lern your history before you speeak

  • @ItzizAustin ... me too cox if it wox lennon as john lennon there wox no point mentioning karl marx.....

  • Its odd, I just gave this song a listen because of the anniversary of the sad death of Buddy Holly...the discussion on whether Don said "Lenin" or "Lennon" led me to really read the lyrics of this great song for the first time, and to speculate about their meanings. Very intriguing song.

  • i don't care what type of music is your favorite with out a second thought you must know this is one of the greatest songs ever made, "pried" .

  • @ItzizAustin yes it is lennon, you know, as in JOHN LENNON

  • Yes, Lenin is involved in the whole idea behind the line, but it's referring to Lennon in the song.

  • @IcyGodX no its not

  • "As the sixties revolution builds, rock moves towards a more political and social role, mirroring the changing political climate that would increasingly come to embrace a kind of socialism for America—hence (John) Lennon (of the Beatles, of course) reading a book on (Karl) Marx. And as the writings of Marx proved so influential in Russian leader Vladimir Lenin's thinking and his role in the Russian Revolution of 1917, the idea of a cultural revolution in the works is obvious."

    It's Lennon.

  • Gotta wonder if Lennon read the classic "Harpo Speaks" by Harpo Marx

  • @scottalias ROFL

  • @scottalias too funny

  • Dug out my old vinyl LP of this, with the lyrics from the liner notes that do indeed say Lennon, not the expected Lenin. Its a very cryptic song, not sure what he's trying to say with that.

  • 93'rd liker

  • something touched me deep inside the day the music died......

  • paper boy finds his hero dead on the front page, saddest story ever. R.I.P. Charles H. Holley

  • @ItzizAustin

It's McLean... American boy... remembering the good old days.......

  • @ItzizAustin

    You wish,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • im sorry if im wrong when i say this but this song reminds me of the battle between todays music and i guess i can say yesterdays music but i love this music screw all this new crap its more disqusting then mc donalds

  • Comment removed

  • quick question, what music died? lol

  • to the lil monster ----1959 a plane crashed killing buddy holly, richie valens, and the "big bopper" --all popular musicians

  • @ckenrocks well thank you but yes i know he died but his music didnt?

  • Don McLean's "American Pie" is one of the greatest songs ever written..

  • @ItzizAustin It could really be either/or because he's referring to Lenin, but as an allusion to Lennon.

  • it a tribute to buddy holly

  • @ItzizAustin I think you're right. I've heard people say that before, but I didn't check my lyrics. I'll fix it. :)

  • @SW2395 it is Lennon

  • I love the song, but are you people idiots? It's NOT 'Lenin', it's 'Lennon'.

My god, do you people even know who John Lennon is?

I swear, before you put in your lyrics, LOOK THEM UP before some idiot tries to correct you.

  • @IcyGodX ^This.

    Also, hello there, Icy.

it is I, WOOTinator from them Minecraft Forums.

:P Glad to see someone sane on the internet.

  • @IcyGodX seriously! why would John Lennon read a book on Marxism?...

the people on this page obviously know who John Lennon is. Because this is real music; people on this page will appreciate Real Music. - it is Lenin.

  • @SW2395 It's actually "Lennon" according to the liner notes on the LP, several references to the beatles in this song

  • @scottalias I'll compromise and put both. :D

  • @SW2395 Sounds good, lotta weird references in this song..I think the jester is Dylan, the girl who sang the blues is Janis Joplin, the king has to be Elvis, "Helter Skelter in a summer swelter" is clearly a reference to the Manson Murders in August, "No angel born in hell, Could break that satan's spell" has got to be referring to the Hell's Angels killing the man with the gun at Altamont, "the sergeants played a marching tune" could be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.....there's more

  • @scottalias That sounds right, we went over all the references in school a few years ago.

  • @scottalias I thought maybe Elvis was both the king & jester. I heard someone say on TV he turned from the king to the jester when he got fat, used drugs, and couldn't remember his lyrics. I also heard George Carlin say people considered Elvis's death the "day the music died", so Elvis was also the music, and Carlin said they were wrong and that Elvis was overrated.

  • @scottalias hahaha, wow i havent heard "sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band" referenced in quite some time. props to you.

  • @SW2395 If it's a song about the 60's, having Lenin reading a book on Marx wouldn't make sense. Lenin died in 1924 or something.

  • madonna made a remix.......heck, I feel like making remix 3

  • Love it! Love it!! This is in my all time top 5 tunes.

Thanks for sharing. Great quality too.

    5/5 & fav

  • Yeah... This is good, thanks.

  • thank you for putting a good quality video up with lyrics... i hate crappy music videos

  • thanks

  • @jakeschaef09 yes this is great audio quality but i don't see any lyrics

  • @johncross008 The lyrics are in the description. You have to push the arrow in the top right corner of the description box. :D

  • @johncross008

Drove my Chevy to the levy but the levy..................was gone...............remember Katrina.......the US govt was busy making money in IRAQ
