for strict feeding porpuses the paper towel is best, but yes in general they do like digging :P

Feeding outside of the cage is just goofy. There is no issue of impaction in healthy individuals in proper conditions. Now, dehydrated and emanciated individuals are another story...

Could be that the paper towel is just for feeding purposes so that he doesn't ingest substrate.

I too, agree with Zabuzzathemonitor. Ackies are burrowers. In the wild, that is where they spend most of their time. They use those burrows for hiding, thermoregulation, "humidiregulation," ambush feeding, and nesting. Get that lizard on at least a foot of burrowable dirt, s/he will gladly thank you for it.

Otherwise, great looking monitor. I own a pair (and another trio soon) of yellows myself.
