I remember when this first aired on TV in the UK, over 20 years ago now. I was knocked out by it and began my lifelong Mahler journey thereafter. Tennstedt was one of the greatest Mahlerians and this performance of the 8th has never been bettered.
I am sure Mahler would be glad to hear this-the climax is so well prepared-never heard it better-what a luck that we can enjoy this overwhelming performance!!
Gorgeous. With ONE exception... at the five-minute mark, when the organ enters. I wanted that organ to really roar, make the building shake, and it just doesn't. That's the easiest way to ruin this finale.
this video still has less than 10k views :(, i don't get it... i'm still hoping that once i come back to it, suddenly it has 1000000 views and finally gets the attention it deserves. pure perfection...
@flamencobunche It is sad indeed to see this kind of music doesn't attract as many people as pop-crap radio music. More than 10k now by the way. Best composer ever in my opinion.
If there was ever a moment of pure....perfection, it happened when Mahler wrote this. Unbelievable music, and an excellent interpretation. I give Tennstedt and this orchestra a tip of my hat.
I'm sorry, but the 79 recording with CSO Arlene Auger, Lucia Popp is much better. When the symphony takes over and the brass section have a chorale, they actually sound like an organ. The attacks and releases are perfectly together. at 5:54 the Trumpets and Trombones are not together. but otherwise it is none the less enjoyable to listen to.
@joshbrochill17 search Mahler 8 Solti. choose finale and around the 8 minute mark is where it comes to the chorale/organ reprise that I speak of. I can't direct link for some reason within a reply. Hope you enjoy it. :)
Klaus Tennstedt, an old maestro from Dresden. I have this dvd myself, don't need to compare with any other performances on video, because I know this is the BEST, and ONE & ONLY PERFORMANCE of great Mahler Eighth. A deeply touching performance, utterly solemn. London Philharmonic, the Choir, the singers, every thing is perfect. Absolute Bravo to maestro, you are so great.

@frenchbassoon Tennstedt didn´t ruin anything - just because you think this is an organ concerto!

Tennstedt was an electrifying conductor who knew Mahler's mind and soul.

這是一次偉大馬勒演奏。 德國指揮天舒德把這首偉大作品演譯得氣勢磅礡,感人肺腑。堪稱完美,無可匹敵。Bravo !!

Wonderful. Klaus Tennstedt was so fantastic with Mahler's symphonies, and the 8th especially. This concert must have been a great occasion.
