is the striking fist down a new move? i was in shotokan about 13 years ago. im 24 now, its the fist that comes down to hit the nose it looks like. i do not remember doing that move unless my sensei taught us wrong?
@xxtheclashxx not wrong. just different. nothing wrong about it. but yes, the doward fist strike is a strike to the nose. i'v also seen people teach it as a block as if you're glancing off a roundhouse kick.
@nightfalls21 i have, and all of the Pinan/Heian Nidans look like what you just did. I'v looked up tons of Shodans and it is not what i see you doing. but its not a bad thing, my sensei for some reason got taught that pinan 3 was 5... i just found this out a few months ago from watching others' pinans, i was wrong, and my sensei got them taught to him differently. nothing wrong with doing some research and finding where the change started...
@nightfalls21 and why would so many people be saying that what you did was nidan? are we all wrong? look into it, theres a reason we believe this to be so.
@SenseiGrove I'm well versed in Shotokan history. I am aware that in Shito-ryu, Wado-ryu and a couple of other styles Pinan Nidan is the equivalent of Shotokan's Heian Shodan. What is shown in this video is of the Shotokan style and in the Shotokan style this video is of Heian Shodan. If you search youtube for "Heian Shodan Kanazawa" you will see that this kata is the same as his. Master Kanazawa is a 10th dan and trained under Master Funakoshi who founded the Shotokan style.

@MatsunamiKarate no... this is nidan... shodan starts with two closed fists highblock/invert block...

@SenseiGrove I think you have them backwards, its definitely Shodan. Do a search on Heian Shodan, there are countless other examples of it.
