Disappointed by the Anti-Americanism in the comments here. Let's face it, Brett's biggest influences are Bowie & Morrissey, both of whom have had huge success in the States, so I'm not buying America's fear of androgyny as the reason why Suede never broke the US market. Dig a little deeper, people. Peace!
This, mah boys, was responsible for changing the rules on the BRITs. No more repetitive nominations for pricks from yesteryear and has beens with mediocre albums.
This time it was the Indie scene taking over the ceremony. Still up to today that hasn't changed. But now we have glam shite that makes Indie geniuses stay in the dark (maybe because they want it, but that does not allow people to despise them for no reason)
@giterdun77 - How sad you didn't know any girls who liked Suede - I (American) was in HS when I heard them and it was like, "Wow - who is that?" and also, "I want..." :}
@gitergun77 - How sad you didn't know any girls who liked Suede - I (American) was in HS when I heard them and it was like, "Wow - who is that?" and also, "I want..." :}
Theres some proper aggression and rebellion going on in this performance, its like a mixture of punk and glam, the clash meets brian eno and david bowie. No one else was doing this at the time. Ace.
This, as late as 1993, kicked-off the 90's, for me. Without NME putting pressure on the BPI to let Suede play at the recently renamed Brits Awards, there would have been no Pulp, Blur or Oasis breaking through, forget Ocean Colour Scene, Cast, The Lightning Seeds (oh, you already have), Baddiel & Skinner's Three Lions. I can still see the the faces of music establishment honchos, in their dinner jackets and dickie bows, mouths open, agog! Suede were the most creative of their peers, undoubtedly!
what a performance. The voice is amazing, the music is great, Brett' look is pure androgyny, and his freaky moves in this one are just marvellous. Anyone who were expecting more Phill Collins or Annie Lennox got surprised. This was the point of it. the more brett realised how they were out of place the more he would express himself. at the end of the performance he was already possessed by his "demon".
Hilarious shots of the audience clearly thinking "Where's Annie Lennox?" I remember sitting there with my mouth open at how amazing this was and how exciting it felt. Brilliant clip, thanks for posting it!

The sad fact is that this is the only decent song Suede ever recorded. Oasis did well globally cos Noel can pen a catchy tune, it really is as simple as thar.Sorry!
Out. Standing. I used to watch this like five times every morning before school and then my Mum taped over it. Naturally I had to burn her house down.
not their best song, but Suede marked here one of the best performances ever in the history of english music, and without a doubt the best performance ver in the brits! people just got petrified...
Amazing. The thing about this was that the Brit awards had never seen anything like it. Check the people just sitting there stunned. One of the best bands I ever saw live.Timeless.
Why on earth Oasis broke in the states while Suede remained relatively obscure over here is still a mystery to me as Suede were/are a much more interesting band, both musically and visually. I suspect that Brett's overt brand of androgyny was a bit terrifying to the macho boys and even the girls in the states;whereas in European the kids wanted to eat the man alive. It certainly wasn't the music's fault b/c they wrote some of the most delicious pop music ever recorded.
I guess Oasis were indeed more laddish and had more mass-appealing, more stadium-sized songs. And indeed, the early Bowie & Roxy Music didn't make it in the States either.
@ritter89 well yes and no. The music industry is a crazy thing. This band failed because of themselves more than anything. if you'd be interested post me back and ill explain further
@vars666 I appreciate the offer but I'm well aware of the infighting between Butler and Anderson, the "Brits Best New Band?" article, as well as the drugs, egos, etc (if this is what you mean). MTV debuted their material on 120 Minutes, they were on Conan during his first year, made the cover of every British music mag like Q, etc. Nevertheless, they remained a "cult" type band in the states whereas Oasis was enormous. Similar fate for Blur until they went "macho/grunge" with #2 "Woo Hoo" shit.
@ritter89 American *women* didn't dig Suede, which was/is telling. Girls I knew didn't "like his voice". Complete lack of sophistication or taste, preferring "meat and potatoes" to the clear "Thai food" that is Suede [actual analogy drawn by Suede's US booking agent to me back in 1999....]. It's better that Suede stayed a bit more obscure than Oasis, Verve, et al. of that era...
@ritter89 Well said mate. Didn't know Suede hadn't really cracked the USA but they sure deserve to. Since seeing them in London last month I can't stop listening to them again.
such an incredible thing to watch, its a brilliant performance, i would've loved to have seen the reaction of some of the posh guys in the audience! Animal Nitrate would only make my Suede Top 10, there are better songs imo, but this is arguably their best ever performance.
Amazing stuff...can't belive I have to use my nearly teenage daughters id to comment on such a fantastic moment in music history. Suede at their best before any 'imploding' took place.

You can tell the chummy rock and pop establishment are shitting it in the audience, and the NME's influence at the time (on the cusp of one of the biggest periods of music paper sales, the mid-'90s) was enough for their campaign to succeed, and they got Suede on the Brits.

You have to remember, Suede broke onto the scene that was dominated by US grunge. No one got them over there until later :D
