Skype is Pier-to-Peir or as I like to call it, Person to Person technology, meaning anything sent can only be received when both people are online, not just files but also, instant messages, contact requests and calls. If the recipient has Voice Mail with Skype, you can call them and leave a message even while they are offline, which they will get when online again also true of IM messages & files.
