From what I've seen, the majority of the protests circle around the lack of action by the government to deal with growing homelessness. A large majority of the homeless are native people who remain homeless due to substance abuse.

I never understood why anyone would want to host the Olympics, or any other such major event.

Sure one gets some foreign currecny from tourists/visitors, but not really worth all the disruptions and hassle and worry.

But then again, it's all national p.r. at this point anyhow.

Good question; beyond the idea of prestige (especially important for the westcoast of Canada, tourism is huge) there are the immediate positive political benefits of created (temporary) employment, focus away from problems and issues and a giant party credited to the current political powers. Essentially bread and circuses.

The driving force behind the initial bid is primarily developers and massive real estate speculators and the city and community councils with whom they work hand in hand.

The infrastructure built is of limited use and never pays for itself, meanwhile the working people are saddled with more debt.
