  • Really enjoyed watching the Thames and canal sails Dylan, especially with snow and ice outside! Surprised how quiet it is and how few people were around- I expected dog walkers, anglers and a few boats around..

  • But you don't see the dribbles and spatters when sailing by at speed!

  • This will save a small fortune and a lot of time on you going to the gym Dylan.

  • Sweet little boat - nice job on the build! As far as things not going right, I don't think the most dyed-in-the-wool sailing purist would object to your "handraulic" auxiliary power. Love those old bridges!

  • @laserd8 It was a quick and dirty job - the white painted inside is spattered with dribbled bits of epoxy. It is amazing how the odd bit of varnished wood improves the look but I would be ashamed to let any proper boat builder see it. The thin ply knuckled around the frames. The stitch and glue version will be much smoother

  • How about boards to the sides the same as the old thames barges. You could always cramp a shaped piece of ply to the side to see how she reacts.

  • @cjsailing1 It seems to be pretty close winded - it is all about technique and letting that chine dig in a bit

It is the simplicty of the thing that I like so much - so no bilge boards for me

  • bridges, pft! I'd love to set my dinghy free from it's lake if it weren't for the bridges.

  • @davemakesawave build one of these - or drop the mast - peasy

  • Dylan, any idea of speed? The normal speed videos make it look fast

  • @ianc1200 it feels fast - but I am so low down. Well above walking speed when there is enough wind. On the first trip jill was having rouble keeping up

    Dylan

  • D, One thing you should look at is the "chine runners" concept, created by Matt Layden. Google that and I promise you you will have some fun! M.

  • @OldJong Iwas going to mention the same thing, his Paradox design has sort of horizontal bilge keels. I was also going to mention getting a battery and a quiet electric trolling motor to help you power through those light winds that clock around you from the trees and buildings.but saw how well you paddled it and best to keep things simple. Your short canal cruises are more fun to watch than you might imagine, i feel like i am in the boat.

  • Great video. I was just wondering if some sort of keel would help. Maybe something like a 1"x2" piece of wood running the length of the bottom.

  • @captainandthelady I did think of putting a couple of strips along the bottom - but I am told that it would make tacking harder - at the moment you can see the ease with which it turns. A gentle list to leeward does give you a masive amount of chine in the water - and that really resists the sideways drift. As you can see from the first film, when it does well, it goes really well. Once you start to stuff up then you can soon lose control. It is all about technique - I will learn
