  • This is sick.. amazing! Never heard the original. Brilliant song.. so intricate.

  • When we were weans and Horslips used to play Culdaff Arms we used to hang around the village to hear the sounds and especially this tune.

    Wonderful memories.

  • @sipowic1

    ...and The Lilac in Carn?

  • I really can't understand why this riff isn't in the greatest riffs of all time! At least top ten!

  • This is a trad-rock version of Seán Ó Riada's traditional Marcshlua Uí Néill, about the march of Aodh Mór Ó Néill down to Kinsale to meet the Spanish in 1601, isn't it? Have a listen to Ó Riada's tune and make up your own mind.

  • Gotta give props to the four poxmen of the horslips

  • If not the best irish band then certainly the most original, good guys, they always gave some time after the gig to their audience. You could actually get to talk to them. Try that with Bono or Van.

  • these guys and thin lizzy best of the Irish :-)

  • i got this album a year ago but i cant stop listenning

  • GREATIST HORSLIPS YET

  • Questo riff di chitarra è presente anche sul lp di Alan Stivell Live in dublin,(mi pare sia Live in Dublin).

  • prophets

  • Actually bringing on Van Halen to open broke up Sabbath. Hair metal and heavy metal don't mix.

  • This is the Irish 70s metal band that opened for Black Sabbath on the Never Say Die Tour, before Sabbath jumped the pond and got Van Halen on board to open the American tour.

  • horse shite

  • chancarz

  • far better than the rubberbandits !!

  • One hundred plebs are so much better than one.

  • Just how good is this? For guitar riffs it is up there with Smoke on the Water and God knows what else. Brilliant song.

  • not bad for a boy from arbo seen horslips 100s of times still top arfter 30years

  • The Holow, Pheonix Park, Dublin. flash bombs & smoke, mid seventies. Briliant

  • Just saw them at Cropredy - they were S-U-P-E-R-B. Absolute dynamite, and this song went down brilliantly. Got a signed shirt out of them too!

  • franz ferninand :P

  • still gigglin at the silver hand

  • wrong! its the greatest song of all time.

  • The best Irish band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • these boys turning in rural Ireland ,must be like space men arriving !!!

  • i used to go see these guys live. it was head banging stuff. great

  • Gae Bolga bass.......

  • Yeah what's with the RPAs?

  • i would have sex with that bassline

  • @karakittle All riiight! Thanks a lot... I would have never thought it was actually about Culann's Hound... I'll go and check those tales... I love Celtic mythology. Cheers!

  • @DCLsMusic

Yeah, red is traditionally associated with the province of Ulster, hence the symbol for the province being the Red Hand. Cúchulainn was the hero of Ulster, and the name roughly translates as Culann's hound, so the red destroyer is a name for him.

  • I would say the description is fairly accurate.

  • Hey! I recognize the guy in green! It's St. John from that Da Vinci painting!

  • Great music - I've got to listen to more of this band. I've only ever heard old Irish music before, so this is a joy to discover. Could somebody please tell me - what is the instrument that sounds a tiny bit like the bagpipes and sounds so fantastic, that one of the guys is holding against his leg & playing towards the end of the video?

  • @darkallegiance666 they are uilleann pipes, they are a lot like the bag pipes but are a lot softer and can be played in doors- they are a very traditional Irish instrument which pre date the Scottish bag pipe and have a much wider range. if you liked this look up "Rory Gallagher- bad penny" another unbelievable Irish musician from the same era. enjoy.

  • @sykfuk Thanks very much for the information!! I've never heard of uilleann pipes before, which makes me wonder why I haven't, since we got taught about heaps of other different musical instruments at school but not a mention of these. They sound so fabulous, too. Thanks also for the information about Rory Gallagher - I listened before typing this and greatly enjoyed the songs. : )

  • The 2nd greatest Irish song of all time, the best is obviously 'Emerald' by Thin Lizzy IMHO

  • @Dirkchucklebutty

Er no, this IS no 1 and always will be!

  • Good band, nice video

  • that's my mam's stepcousin playing the drums :)

  • Great band! I am Swiss and I saw them in Dublin in 1979, and now I have the great pleasure to go and see them again in August at the Sion Guinness Irish Festival ( Switzerland). I'm so happy I can't wait!!!

  • I saw this when on T.V in Wales in a caravan on a trip and it was boss

  • Charlie , Charlie, even as a ´´caveman´´ looking sexy, powerful than ever!

  • dearc d9on red for bleck for cas thoir ag droichead dun citeAL.

  • Italia 90

    Never forget.

  • Horslips In the Blood just like the Whiskey..

  • J'yup...

  • first concert I ever went to, in the ulster hall in belfast, fantastic

  • That riff is the best ever, by anyone.

Why isn't this the Irish national anthem??

  • ive always wondered if thats an electric mandolin hes playing :L

  • @Oggie243 Looks like it.

  • is brea liom an horslips agus u2

  • Is brea liom Horslips agus go maith!

  • @Torres9HD

Nil,Is Aoibhann Liom do Horslips....ta se go hiontach!

  • go maith

  • Celtic Rock is the most underrated genre of music ever, and the Horslips are the most uderated band ever! U2 are good they're just overplayed, Thin Lizzy are the greatest irish band of all time but when they started to get very very popular phyl lynett died. So much for the luck of the irish!

  • They're playing Cropredy this year!!

  • 13 people are Brits!

  • @Mack01000 Nope, we like this too!

  • Mo Chara, their is no more kings in Ireland....we can't even rob orchards anymore. Imagine robbin orchards with an I-pad, you're bound to get hung? Horslips, Ard Ri na h-Eireann, feck off TOTP, Tiocfaidh ar music aris.xx

  • an t-amhrán Gaeilge is fearr riamh!

  • an t-amhrán Gaeilge is fearr riamh!

  • nothing to do with nuada.its cuchullain {koo hull in)meaning the hound of cullen.

dearg doom means "red distruction"the silver devils blade was his spear the" gae bolga"he is the hero of the saga "tain bo culline"the cattle raid of cooley"

  • lu was not the 1st king. diarmuid was

  • @dcconsi no nugget is not doing a piss take at all.i have the old wax 45 in front of me now.bought in 1973.

i know this saga and i even knew the band.

  • @TheAltaltalt1 on reflection yes nugget is doing a piss take.i misread a comment sorry my stupid mistake.

  • Don't know whether yer man, YourManNugget is just taking the piss or what but this song is from 1973 and the main guitar part was used for the football anthem. It has just been announced that Horslips will play Fairport Convention's Cropredy Festival in August of this year!

  • better then lizzy

  • I hate when these new groups come along and rob a classic song. The guitar riff in this is blatanly stolen from jack charltons 1990 hit put em under pressure. Pure plageurists.

  • "The greatest Irish song of all time"

You set yourself up for a fall with statements like that, any body can argue that but the ear only argues with what it hears and this is not great at all.

  • you can stick u2 up you know where.......this is the best irish band of all time.......

  • @LarryFogarty Well that's not really true, I mean there was Thin Lizzy...

  • @ConnbineHarvester very true

  • the devil 666

  • I really like Horslips, y'know. But they are an Irish Spinal Tap, aren't they?

  • Ye but the surname o'connor sort of gives the Irish away doesn't it ?

  • 13 people aren't irish...

  • @barrythechupacabra I think it's be nearer 6 billion

  • @barrythechupacabra Hey! I'm not Irish and still love this song, mad respect to Horslips! Music has no nationality... ;)

  • @DCLsMusic Unless it's Irish music

  • @DCLsMusic how old r u?

  • @Zoso709 I'm 20 why? too stupid what I said? xP

  • @DCLsMusic of course music has a nationality every country has thier own distinct music to thier culture music is the biggest thing that can define a people look at traditional irish music to our culture and americans with thier traditional music look at the name of this song dearg doom (red doom) half of it is in irish the two thing that define a culture thier language and thier music

  • @darkshadow2341 Of course, in that sense... I agree. What I meant to say is... I can love that song and It can mean as much for me as it does for any Irish person. And I can tell you some of songs that mean the most for me are not even from my country, that's what I meant to say in response to that comment of "13 people aren't Irish", because any Irish boy into Justin Bieber will click "dislike" in this song... and he'd still be Irish. Don't know If I explained myself.. hope so.. cheers!

  • @DCLsMusic I think I know what you mean when you say that music has no nationality, but am sure that some music can have specific meaning for certain nationalities.Having said that I am English (with a capital E :) ) but loved Horslips when I saw them in the 70s and have even recently registered my dog with the name of Dearg Doom.

Horslips were special. I heard nothing like them at the time or since

  • @cambkite

liked the band, but thats an awful thing to your dog...red destroyer? (i think)..maybe he/she doesnt like red outfits !!

  • @edelweiss1001 Originally wanted the name for my Irish (red) Setter but KC wouldn't let me have it. The dog that eventually got the name is orange, but a very red orange, so the name was meant to refer to the colour of the dog and it's habits.

  • @DCLsMusic yes it does.....

  • @Cliathairi metaphorically speaking...

  • Charles O'Connor was from Middlesbrough!

  • @mozy1955 thats ok we are not bigots.

  • @mozy1955 He's actually from Whitby. He has an Antique shop there.

  • Charles O'Connor was from Middlesbrough!

  • probably, but Horselips are unforgettable for this one

  • i really liked them Prod i just loved the music

  • i never heard of this till this morning i will never be the same omg this is awesome my new favoirte video ever

  • 100 heads are so much better than one!!!!!!

  • I went to the same school as Barry Devlin - he was a few years above me, but oul 'Forkie Hicks' who did a bit of lilting, hadn't a bad word to say about Barry and the Horslips.

    Christ, I feel old.............

  • I not sure I can disagree that it the best Irish song ever...... that's the truth.

  • Yayyyyyy luv the mandolin

  • yyyeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Such a cool song! Vivian Campbell has been doing this live with his blues band out in L.A..

  • I saw them mid 70ies as supporting act to Nazareth here in Germany. They brought the house down as did Nazareth.

  • Look at charles and johnny at 1:51 love this song btw

  • I knew John Fean was a great guitarist, at 1.54 he's doing the guitar solo without even playing it!!!

  • Good show, musically more polished than last year, but last year was a better gig. Didn't play Lonliness, I'll Be Waiting, or Long Weekend. Not a full house either. Was slightly disappointed.

  • @sting2009

The first gig was always going to be better as most people were just so excited at seeing the band again , I know I was. I think the weather being so bad last Dec may have stopped some people travelling up (but not me ) and also they did the 3 gigs around the country as well. They're playing in Leopardstown race course Aug 11rth this year.

I'd love to see them and Moving Hearts do a double header.

  • Headin' for the gig in the O2. Hope it's a great show!

  • Comment removed

  • im 16 and i went to see them in kilarney 2 days ago, in fairness i thought id be bored out of my mind but they were actually very good and wkd sound, they talked to the fans after for hours, like singers should do instead of being cocky and carried away with fame. my dad was absolutely delighted they got back together after 30 years

  • @SReynolds94 shut up sean

  • is aoibhinn liom an tamhrán seo...!! ba mhaith lipm é a fhoghlaim ar an flúit...=D

  • @aliceisatreehugger ceapaim go mbeidh é sin an ndeachar ar fad

  • @ryder1998 'sea,rinné mé dearmad anyways xD sa todchaí...=P

  • @CallyPott tá siad deacar a thuiscint toisc go bhfuil siad scríofa sa Ghaeilge. Is breá liom an riff seo! An gcuimhin libh nuair a bhaintear úsáid as ag Italia 90? Put 'em under pressure! Ar fheabhas!

  • An t-amhran is fearr liom sa domhain. Ni raibh aon amhranach aris is fearr sa horslips í milte bliain.

  • is it just me, or, is there anyone else out there who finds other peoples' comments hard to understand? Not all, just some of them.

  • @CallyPott are you being specific to someone here

  • is ea Dearg Doom an amhrán is fearr atá is agam san domhan

  • riffgaism.

  • its great being irish, the rest of the world are almost jealous

  • TTUUNNEE

  • Grew up to my parents partying late in to the evening listening to Horselips. Great memories.

  • WHAT A TUNE!!!!:)

  • Strong Hoselips to see this original. I was only familiar with Emm Gryner's cover on her "Love and Death" CD -- it's also here on youtube but can't post it - see /watch?v=TtlhFj0CiYI

  • It aint fucking traditional but i still love it just saying you cant call it great Irish music You have to call it Great Irish Rock

  • They play The Waterfront Hall in Belfast this coming Dec 1st and 2nd 2010 :)

  • Why does Charles o'Connor have a silver hand?

  • I reckon he's matching the cover art from "The Tain," which features a big silver fist--maybe his-- bearing the same large square ring and chain mail accessory. A similar picture can be seen in the video under the keyboard.

  • @100TEEDEE

This silver hand is possibly a reference to Nuadha Airgeatlámh (Silverhand) who features in the Leabhar Gabhála Éireann (The Irish Book of Invasions)

He was the first king of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

Which was the subject of a later Horslips concept album.

  • @MunnkeyMan nothing to do with the book of invasions.dearg doom means "red distruction"its cuchailann

"the hunting dog of cullen"and its from the saga "the cattle raid of cooley"he wasnt celtic but he was chieftain of the "sedanti"an ancient pictish tribe.the picts came to ireland long before the celts.

  • @TheAltaltalt1

Yes it is.The reason Charles O'Connor has a silver hand is a reference to the Book of Invasions!!!

Read my post and the post I replied to again and try to comment on the inaccuracies. You'll find that there are none.

Read the Book of Invasions at the CELT website from UCC or read up on the Horslips, and you'll find that there are no untruths in my post!!

  • @MunnkeyMan yes nuada was an ancient king your right indeed, but this song is sedanta mcsualtin otherwise cuchuallain.a slightly later killing machine.the album "the tain"is based on his adventures.

  • @TheAltaltalt1

Why does Charles O'Connor have his hand painted silver???

That was the question I answered.......................

  • Comment removed

  • @MunnkeyMan Interesting. I was trying to find info on Dearg Doom. Was it mythology , Irish folklore? Either way great band

  • @jimbronxny Dearg Doom is a reference to Cú Chulainn. He was a major character in what's known as the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology. He is in essence an Irish Achilles. You'll find a list of texts if you go to the "Ulster Cycle" page of wikipedia and go to the Online Translations subsection for links. Type "celt ucc published" into google, this will bring you to the Corpus of Electronic Texts at UCC, which is a great resource. Find yourself the Book of Leinster or the Táin Bó Cúalnge.

  • great folk music from early 1970's but these guy's must have been takken some LSD!!!

  • I love the fashion!

  • YES! Fantastic! On an amusing side note, my housemate just said "Horse lips? they sound like a side dish."

  • 5/5 severely underrated

  • the history is great but the song is fuckin rockin

  • Wonder will Ray Fean be on drums this year or will we see a return for Eamon Carr?

  • They were on Downtown Radio today , Didnt this was their song , a new fan i guess!

  • The lads play the O2 on the 4th Dec. If it's anything like last years gig it'll be a fantastic night. Can't wait!!!

  • november caslebar co mayo. off to relive my teens with a vengeance!!!

  • I use to hear their music every summer when i use to go to Ireland on holidays about 100 years ago.... Fantastic posting defo Blast from my Past.... i owned a LP of theirs Tracks from the Vaults cracking song on it called Motorway Madness..Would love to hear that again....Sadly LP lost somewhere in my time-line....

  • Slough Feg covered this song, I found this while searching for their version, didn't even know about this band. Now I'm gonna have to find more!

  • This is the Irish Lindisfarne.

  • @CiaranPaulRoche As far as I know they are back together again, playing selected gigs around the country. They have been on TV recently, chat shows and the like. I still have an original LP of theirs, called 'Happy to Meet, Sorry to part', the sleeve is in the shape of a concertina, must have cost bucket loads to produce back then. I heard a story that Jagger of the Stones complained that a not so well know band from Ireland could have an album cover like that produced.

  • @templemore85 I LOVE THAT SONG SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH

  • i wanna know how to play this song on guitar ... please sumon give me a link to sumon who plays it ,..... ta very much

  • @XSNIPSXx to get the guitar tabs for this you could go to ultimate guitar.com and look the song up

im still learning and sticking to the novice tabs

i know the start of back in black and 7 nation army off by heart so far

    but thats it

  • Thanks so much for posting this song. Tis great!

  • One of IRELAND's greatest bands. Hit after hit, they choose to be different, then they wowed the States. Their demise was pressure to change from the Recording label fat cats. They said no to change, and not long after they split up. Which proves that no matter how talented you are, if the labels don't like it, you are history.

  • @templemore85 So true..... if they were around today they wouldn't have to answer to the corporations and could distribute their brilliant and innovative music themselfs.

  • Being Irish makes me enjoy this just a little bit more

  • @DaireH312 Not being Irish makes me wish to be Irish

  • @DaireH312 imposter!! irish dont have that good grammar!

  • @DaireH312 YeeeeeOOWWW!! this and fairytale of new york, ultimate irish songs!

  • @kaza4gj fairytale of new york? em.......no

  • @DaireH312 Charles O'Connor was from Middlesbrough!

  • A GREAT Irish band and a bit underated.

I know these were great favourites of CONSORTIUM a great UK band.

Check out the "REBIRTH" and "13th HOUR" albums, look in on MyspaceConsortium1971to1980...
