My friend and I love Sound of Music so much, particularly the Austrian maid Frau Schmidt, that we made a parody of the musical told from Frau's perspective. It's a comedy that we both wrote. If you're interested in seeing it yourself, youtube "Sound of Frau" and click on the version with the best quality! :D
I love this version. It was the original. I like "Something Good," but there's something about this song that love, the simplicity of it. My parents had the original album before the movie came out. I saw the play with Florence Henderson in Chicago also, the original.
Honestly, it's a bit forgettable. Not their best work... every R&H musical has a great love song.... "People Will Say We're In Love" from Oklahoma!, "If I Loved You" from Carousel, "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific... and The King and I has TWO great love songs... "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in A Shadow".
Even tho this is a solidly written song, it's not the same caliber and not very romantic. No wonder they had Rodgers write a new one for the movie.
I'm very sure that Something Good works better in this scene, and I think I could side with Rodgers as he didn't really care for this song. It seems to be more in character for this scene, as if Maria and Captain von Trapp are finding redemption through their love and their married life together.
I can't imagine Maria and The Captain's love scene in the movie with this song. But I saw this one in a production here in the Philippines and it was good, too. It's just that I'm used to Something Good and so maybe that's why I can't see the wonder of this song in that scene...
role as Maria was reproduced in a film version, entitled The Trapp Family Singers, with Theodore Bikel, and Laurie Peters as Liesl. The movie ended with all the Trapps waving behind a fence, from their new home in Vermont. It was such a delightful movie, and for some reason has never been shown. Once the Julie Andrews version appeared, few seemed to remember this earlier version.
Are you sure you're not thinking of the German-language film, 'The Trapp Family' starring Ruth Leuwerik? There was a scene like the one you mention in the sequel, which was incuded in the English-dubbed version, I believe. I there really was a filmed version with the original Broadway cast, you must, must tell me where I can see it!
LaMusicaVa, I also replied on the other comment page to you. I know there's a German version; it's different. I viewed Mary Martin as Maria. It was indeed a film, out in March 1961. I've been searching for years for any copy of it to no avail. I was a child, had never heard of the play, was enthralled by the spunk, spirit, joy. Somewhere in the universe someone knows how to broadcast it to us. Let's hope.
OMG!! this is the first time ive heard this song professionally, i didnt perticularly like this song...but i figured that it sounds like "more i cannot wish you" from guys and dolls :D
I think "An Ordinary Couple" is a song about husband and wife, and "Somethings Good" about a couple of lover.Maybe the song was not accord with that scene,so it was exchanged with "Somethings Good".
Perhaps that was Richard Rodgers' reasoning when he wrote "Something Good" for the film adapation (along with being unhappy with "An Ordinary Couple").
You're not the only one who wished to see Mary Martin onstage. I usually associate this song with Mary and Theodore Bikel After seeing the 1998 revival on Broadway, I wonder if it's common to use "Somethings Good" (as they did in the London Revival).
There's the real Maria von Trapp behind Mary Martin.

There is another recording of this song done by opera star Fredericka Von Stade that actually is my favorite, but nice to hear the original too.

Mary Martin was an incredibly unique Broadway talent during a Golden Age. Thanks for this gem.

Well, we all grew up watching the TSOM film via TV broadcasts or home video unless we had the orginal broadway cast recording (in my case LP).
