Seriously?? After 28 YEARS of government incentives and duties forcing Malaysians to pay double prices for other car brands, there are still people saying GIVE PROTON MORE TIME??! please look around for some sense, coz either you lost it or you never had it.
its back to the main theme of all its existence...to cater for mid to lower class driver that do bother to go from point A to point B in a cheaper and efficient manner..beat it in petrol consumption or gadgets...you take what you paid. As simple as that...Proton have their own market segmentation. If your are not on that category, then buy the Ferrari mate!
I am interested in the Proton because it's light and offers manual windows. Of course I prefer a Golf or similar but unfortunately they don't make them simple and light anymore like the Golf 1 & 2. All major brands have gone to heavier, bloated vehicles, full of electrical crap that breaks and is expensive to fix. And their fuel economy is no better (even worse) than 20-30 years ago.

i think it's not fair for some comments to say that proton cars suck and have low quality because it's meant to be cheap. cheap does not mean sucky. if proton is willing to learn and buck up, it is possible to build a cheap yet cheerful car. a car that has quality. (think renault, dacia, citroen - in UK, proton are priced within the same price bracket as them, and yet they have better perceived qualities) proton has 25 years to learn and yet their older products seem to be of better quality.
proton sux.. take it from me.. bought a RM75K proton waja, so call limited edition year 2003.. and just after 7 years, the car cant be used and proton cant do anything.. cheap quality!! even my Suzuki Jimny which is 93' model is still running fine! PROTON SUX!!!

@Ryuing2020 FYI Malaysian gov on behalf MITI has announce the NAP (National Automotive Policy) in 2010. As well as FTA will be finalize in 2011. These changes of policy means that the Malaysian gov want to create the win-win situation between national car vendors and imported vendors. Toyota today (October 2010) has even recall their cars due to mechanical problems. Its not what you drive, but its how you wanna drive.....

got the green savvy, its my baby!!! had it for a 17months now..its a 2007 model...NEVER HAD A SINGLE ISSUE WITH IT...just recently did my 60000km car service...I LOVE PROTON...If i have to change my car id probably go for GEN2....I JUST LOVE PROTON!!!

Most malaysian cars are "copy and paste." The quality and workmanship is not decent and eventhough some proton's come with "lotus handling" etc etc.
Nevertheless,proton has the potential to do so much better and there's still room for improvement.
If proton was more original and hired better car designers,improved quality and design of the car,I'm sure more people would actually like to own one.
Currently,people only buy proton because of its low cost and not because its a great looking car r.

Well the Savvy meets the regulations in Australia, which are as stringent as anywhere in the world (far more strict than UK).
Savvy has a Renault drivetrain and was based on the Twingo.
The first models wouldn't fit half the population in Australia, so they dropped the seats right to the floor - you drive with your knees near your face !

@Ryuing2020 FYI Malaysian gov on behalf MITI has announce the NAP (National Automotive Policy) in 2010. As well as FTA will be finalize in 2011. These changes of policy means that the Malaysian gov want to create the win-win situation between national car vendors and imported vendors. Toyota today (October 2010) has even recall their cars due to mechanical problems. Its not what you drive, but its how you wanna drive.....

@leedsyedz The reason why its cheap beause goverment tax heavily on imported cars. Furthermore, it's not cheap if you think of the long time. The gas mileage suck, need frequent maintanace, and most of all, the safety of malaysian made cars is out of standard. Malaysia cars are always accident prone!

@elmariachi109 You forget that Proton owns Loutu Engineering, and one of their divisions is Lotus Cars, so they pretty much had a jump start in terms of handling and powertrain technology. A shame that they won't allow Lotus to design and engineer the body too though :(

Savvy aka Sawi is claimed to be super tough and built like a nano-tech-strength-enhanced-super-tank that can withstand an indirect nuclear blast from a Trident missile. Proton advertised that Sawi is too tough to be destroyed so it doesn't need any airbags inside. However, real life testing confirms that it's chassis is just as tough as a creme brulee.

@sycheang dude, idrive a proton savvy now,so i know its crap if u got to top up power steering oil every week cos the power steering hose is leaking n to change it i have to import from malaysia(im in singapore)..passenger seatbelt is also faulty n to change the set cost me SGD$290!! have to import also...so to me its crap because a cheap car have to got cheap spare part,but nt the case with proton in singapore...
