Sorry to hear your city is lacking a wide range of butterflies, but I'm glad I can bring you a selection of the ones from my area to see instead! Thanks for the view and nice comment =)
Glad you enjoyed this one - I had hoped to get some more footage this year, but it was very dry and conditions weren't so good.. maybe wetter and better next year! :-)
We really do have some nice species here - and quite a lot of them. I hope to eventually gather enough HD footage for a really nice Hi-Def show. Thanks for stopping by :-)
Mourning Cloaks were one of the first species I reared here in Southern CA... I've heard many people say they are pretty common, and while I do see the adutls flying around sometimes, I have only found the larvae once. Definitely a cool bug :-)
I hope to do a LOT more filming this season in the local mountains and deserts - hopefully we'll get more rain this spring so it will be a good season! :-)
I can think of at least three species that are likely to be found in both Italy and the US. There are also many different species which are closely related and look very similar. It's interesting to study them all :-)
Actually, I do offer my clips for license as royalty-free stock footage. I have a website and dedicated YouTube channel (JCMDIstockfootage) just for that.
I'm also open to collaborative and specialty projects, so let me know if you have ideas. :-)
eBay would be a good outlet if they didn't have so many fees. I wouldn't mind paying a small percentage of sales, but they currently have charges even if the items don't sell. A bit too much overhead.
If you can learn all the buttefly species in your area, and more importantly - what host plants their caterpillars use, you can really attract a lot of them! With the food plants in your garden - you will have your own populations of butterflies in addition to those that come arond from other places. :-)
Thanks so much! I am very much liking the widescreen format as well. I read somewhere on YT that the 720p HD is not yet available overseas - do you get the "Watch in HD" link with 720p (&fmt=22) HD HiRes playback there in France?
Hi Maara! These butterlies were all filmed in the same general area (around Santa Clarita, CA. Although at least 3 different locations/habitats were visited, most of the footage was shot around Bear Divide Ranger Station in the western San Gabriel mountains. You can probably "fly" there in google earth for a virtual visit. Thanks for watching and happy new year! =D
When I watch (any video) in HD full screen, I get a little of the judders, too. However, it plays smoothly in the HD player window. Choppy playback is probably due to a lack of CPU/video subsystem horsepower. It could also be that YT java applet player uses an inefficient CODEC. Either way, it's not the original video. If you download the video and play it back in a smaller window, it should be smooth - my originals all are. :-)
I though it might be a good time to put something like this online - the contrast with winter seems to make it even more welcomed! I have that strange inter-dimensional feeling too - it's bright and sunny here today after being wet and cloudy yesterday. The only common factor is the cold. Brrrr! :-) I sure wish I could store-up all this cold and then use it in summer when it's 105F outside. Do you usually watch these in HD? I'm fairly disappointed with the &fmt=1 "normal" quality ver. :D
Wouldn't it be cool if I could also record and playback the warmth, breeze and smells too? That would be quite the experience on a cold snowy day! Hope you're having a great holiday in spite of the snow shovelling :-)

Fantastic!
I'm looking for high quality HD nature videos, to use in DVDs I plan to produce, as a small local business project.
Are you interested in selling any of your videos, with royalty-free rights? I think you could get paid well from Ebay bidders.
