So this type of rock-o-plane is determined by shifting weight etc. its done purely by a little steering wheel?,cool ive only ever seen the foward facing "cages"
When you feel the positive G's in your brain is so intense. When I came to Lakemont Park a couple of weeks ago, I thought at first "wtf is that?", but once tried, I loved it. :D Nice flight.
I was on this ride with my friend, and when i say there is no safety regulations on this ride, i mean it. All they have is one little bar going across and nothing else. I was like doing flips inside the cart and on top of my friend. It was uncomfortable but really fun.
I've seen Lakemont's Sky Diver in pictures over the internet. It's a very well kept Sky Diver! One of the few that still has all of the Eagles on the cars that are still white. There's a few traveling carnivals with a Sky Diver ( i won't mention names ) that painted over their Eagles on their Sky Diver cars when they re-painted each car to look new again. Those Eagles were originally white, when new from Chance Rides, Inc. The Eagle on each car represents "Freedom"..that's what i think anyway.
Seems like a work out and an amusement ride at the same time....eat some high calorie food wait an hour and ride that ride to burn all those calories, hell yeah!!
@EccentricOtaku You can make it as intense, or non intense as you want to be. We spun a lot so it was pretty intense, but you could make it very tame if you never let the car get upside down, making it a sort of glorified Roll-O-Plane.
Believe it or not, but I have never rode the Sky dive. I would never step foot near anything scary when I was a kid, but would ride it now for sure. I would like to go on it soon though. Ohhh, if I had money, I would set up my own Zipper! Haha. Surprisingly odd, That rides really aren't that expensive as I thought they would be. Crap, then I could have like two awesome rides in my yard.
I love this ride, but I hate the fact there are no single riders alowed. I mean, if everyone you know with you is too scared or no other person will ride with you, you're S.O.L.
I absolutely love this ride, I rode this one alot when I was a teenager and it's a fun ride unless you have a broken steering wheel and you have no control of where it spins. Then that's even better!
one time i went on the ring of fire or at least something similar to that, it had no roof. i was making a call while upside down and right in the middle of it i drop my phone! it was already calling in process but when i came back down the phone landed in my hand!
I love the Sky Diver, like so many of you here love it. It's an awesome classic! It feels like flying a stunt air plane, spinning upside down at the top and twirling towards the ground face down, what a rush!! I got lucky & got the chance to ride a Sky Diver set up at a Fair in Fayetteville, NC in September of last year. Rode it twice, due to the no single rider rule.
I've actually looked up Lakemont Park online and it looks like the Skydiver actually has a permanent home there in Altoona, PA. If you ever see yourself in that neck of the woods you can always ride it then. Or if you are ever out west, NV, CA, OR they usually have this at larger carnivals and state fairs. Don't worry, it'll happen one day :-)
The Skydiver is actually an earlier version of the Zipper. Both rides of course were made by Chance Morgan amusement. The Skydiver came out in like 1965 and the Zipper followed in around I think '67 or '68 according to wikipedia. Perhaps the reason we don't see it much in the midwest is because of its complexity in setup and tear down as doobyboy21 pointed out. It comes in two trailers and can take up to 3 days to fully assemble.
Yeah I live in the midwest (Ohio) and haven't seen this ride in about a decade. Hard to come by around here, much like the bigger Musik Express rides and some others.
I rode the skydiver at the Nevada State Fair in Reno, NV for the first and only time in 1986. It was a wild ride indeed. I had a blast on it. Since that time my fear of heights has kicked into overdrive and I doubt it would be as much fun now. I think only about 2, maybe 3 of these exist anymore in the USA. I now live in Iowa and have never seen one at the Iowa State Fair, or any other carnival. Our trademark ride at the Iowa State Fair is the Skywheel, the double Ferris Wheel.
Believe me, I would if I could. If I had $150, 000 I'd by my own. Recently I saw an advertisement online that someone was selling a Chance Skydiver for $150,000. If I had the money I would buy it and set it up in my back yard...following city permits and such...and make money off it cause like I said no such beast exist around here.
Wow! I haven't been on this ride in years and this video brought back memories...the hummmmmm when your cart went by the base boards....the whip and snap of the spinning cart. However, the version I rode never went backwards...bummage.
The first time I rode this ride I remember getting off and telling my friend, "Whoa! Now THAT'S a ride!"
This ride was a definite eye-catcher at night. It was one of the more vividly colored rides.
I assembled one these! It came on two tractor trailors! And 3 full days to assemble! I operated this and let me tell you it's very old school! Hydraulics thats all it is... The cabins weigh like fuck!
i know thoughtful guy its madness that they still dont make anymore its a wild ride theres none here in the uk only a few in the usa & in oz :) i always thought it would be a wicked ride in total darkness with lasers n strobes n deafening music :)how disorientating would that be :).??
I definately like to ride this over a Zipper. The Zipper is nausiating, yet it's brother made by Chance, the Sky Diver here in the video, is a much smoother & not so nausiating ride at all. The Sky Diver, in a way, rides like a Huss Enterprise..depending on which position your car is in. You can control it to go upside down in loops like an Enterprise does. I rode alone in a few Sky Divers, and i let the wheel turn itself. It's like riding in a stunt airplane, twisting through the sky.
thanks for posting this video this is the only one I have ever seen. As to the person below Chance stoped making these I believe in the 80's. Most of the ones that are still around are act. from the 70's i know right. Great rides and just goes to show you for a ferris wheel they are built pretty dang strong if alot of them are still around in 07. I think they should re-make this ride and keep it the same except make them easier to spin you know.
Our carnival got rid of it in 1992, but Chance did in fact stop manufacturing them after they came out with the zipper in 1968. Most shows that still have them have no problem getting spare parts, but they cost a firtune, so most shows are letting them go. So sad.
I like this ride to. The painful part is when you go forwards. If you're chubby like me the lap bar really presses against your gut. And if you're tall like me i'm 6' 1" the cars are really confining. Talk about a severe case of claustrophobia.
wow this is like the only video i seen on this ride. i freaken love this ride and iv never gone on it. what happen to the ride?? they stop building it?

@UbnubGirl96 They were only loading 4 cars, so the ride could be evenly weighted. That means 12 of the cars were empty.
