The rovers were sent to be geologists bud, not just to produce pretty color pictures. They are replacing if a human was there, but better in some aspects. Sticking camera's more capable scientifically then the human eye on the rover to determine what things are made of. That's one of the main goal's of the mission. There has been an Approximately true-color version done on this, and all the data is freely available in the PDS archives to produce your own color panorama's.

An astoundingly clear and beautiful picture with true colors including the piece of spacecraft with glaring reflections displaying a rainbow effect with most of the colors of the spectrum showing.

THIS is what ALL the images of Mars SHOULD look like.

The particular filters that were used in this panorama, were for enhancing subtle colors to make them more visible for determining the mineral composition of the rocks and soils at Opportunity's landing site. So There is NO hiding of the colors by anyone or NASA.
