No its not a penalty in this case as he is clearly presenting the ball to his team mates. It is fundemental that a player is seen to be making an attempt to release the ball and not holding on when isolated or when there is a fight for possession. Its never to late to get into rugby no matter what size or shape you are. I started playing when i was 22 also but i had a good knowledge of the game. I am 25 now and i play Hooker and love bringing the ball into contact.
