Whitney and Mariah are amazing singers, but as a singer myself, I can say sometimes when you sing very difficult ballads with a big belting voice (chest), and then you try to switch to head or nasal voice, phlegm gets in the way of a clean sound (disgusting but real). Also, people criticize playback, but ALL singers use it (even Beyonce, Christina, Celine) and it's GOOD to use it a few times to keep your voice healthy. The bad thing is when you use it a lot cuz you're not talented enough.

She was stunning when she started, but the drugs and lack of technique cost her her voice. RIP Whitney, you were great.
