Amazing how much Tokyo looks like downtown L.A., lol. Thanks for posting these. Good to know everyone was pretty much alright. I play taiko, and was very concerned for the people on Sado island,
@TornadoXFighter The masks are for pollen/hayfever. Tokyo gets some of the highest airborne pine pollen levels of any city in the world between March and the end of April, and a lot of people are allergic, so they wear the masks, and often glasses, to avoid hayfever. In other times of the year, people wear masks when they have colds, in order to avoid coughing on people or spreading their germs - in those cases, the mask is worn out of consideration to others, and hygiene.
I'm already subscribed to your channel I love Your videos, I wish I really could learn really good Japanese, I'm trying mate no doubt, Hey What Kind of camera Are you using? Love the quality!!! what model is it ? brand ?
As the days keep passing Tokyo seems to be pretty much back to normal on the streets of Shinjuku and Shibuya. The girls are out in high heels and life goes on in the bustle... Good video, hope everything is good with you man
I must admit, having a toddler at home, the news about the water was the most disturbing development so far in this whole thing, but even that seems to be coming right now. Let's hope things affecting Tokyo resolve themselves soon, so we can turn our attention to where it is most needed.
2 days ago in the french they were saying that there was an important demonstration in the street of Tokyo because they suspected the Japanese government to hide what is really happening to Japanese people... apparently it was either a lie or they were overreacted....
@Mark96706 Ah, I see that too - the flickering is because of the camera, probably something to do with the 30fps framerate I shot with. That is not how the lights actually appear.
the wierest things i do find is that people are acting like it is Normal..... shopping for bags, getting drunk after work.... the atmosphere is really strange. i like what your saying and doing but.....
@BlkUnk I think people feel pressure and a kind of sense of responsibility to remain and act composed. But are you not scared because of the atomic rays? They say that tokyo maybe gets hit by the atomic rays?
sorry for my english, I'm form germany actually. :( And we all are pretty worried about the people, japan and the nature over here... maybe they just dont tell you guys the truth over there so you dont panic!!! :(
@qweqeqeqdsx22222 I assume you mean "Radiation". About that.. yeah.. there is none. Well - no more than you'd get from a microwave i'd imagine.
i wish foreign media wouldn't explode things. My local news did a story how tokyo is DESERTED and everyone's wearing mask because of the radiation!! rediculous!
@qweqeqeqdsx22222 No. Well, a bit. But we have hourly info on levels here, and a lot of independent advice that even in the worst case scenario, Tokyo is roughly double the distance of any area that would be in danger.
@tremault First shot was with the GH1 using a very low depth of field f1.4 pancake lens. When you hold it up close to something (like your own face), stuff in the background blurs, which makes in focus objects "pop" more, and hence the feeling it is more vivid.
Most camcorders have lens settings to show everything in focus all the time. The GH1 let's you shoot video with lenses you would take photos with, and it makes the videos look great.
@Hikosaemon And they do look great!! Has that cinematic feel to it... Now does that camera have a built in Microphone? ANd or does it have an external jack for one? IT would seem a camera like that would skimp on a mic that has great sound. Yours sounds pretty good to me...
for tokio standards, this is quite empty streets...so its not a normal thing how the filmer would like to present it. And of course people are afraid, but I think Japanese culture does not "admit" showing fear in a public way.
And of course it is very silly how this is shown in western media... in germany and USA people seem to be more afraid than japanese themselves!
we are very thankful the wind changed and is pulling the nukes out to sea. My wife told her mom on the phone yesterday how nervous I was and she laughed and said she was going to work and everything will be fine. That is the Japanese spirit. They lived through the great depression, WWII & many, many earthquakes. They are very strong and we are in awe.
Thanks for this video. My wife is from Tokyo, we live in East Tennessee USA. All of her family are still in Tokyo. I think we met you at the Youtube Cherry Blossom party in Yoyogi park last Spring 2010. My parent-in-laws sleep under their dining table every night. My brother-in-law lives in Tsukishima near Tokyo fish market and they had flooding, but he's been going to work in central Tokyo. The American media keeps showing Narita like everyone is desperate to flee Japan but that's not the case.
Good lord is that camera picture great! I am having to put off traveling right now to Japan, even though I now have the ability to pay for the Japan rail pass and the Plane ticket. I will be putting it off till I am finished late April. So I start for Japan on May 1, and am trying to go to the May 3 meeting in Tokyo, and see Ikeda Sensei! I hope to at least.
@TubaBuddha I'm very hopeful that Shizuoka, Tokyo, Niigata and places peripheral to the crisis will return to some measure of normal by May, although I suspect we will have power rationing for a while. Certainly, anywhere south or West of those however will be fine. Please enjoy your trip!
Thank goodness that not whole Japan got as badly effected by the earthquake and tsunami as some other parts, the media really had me not knowing what to think. But I'll still go through with a donation whenever my paycheck comes in.
@NodnarbRS Panasonic GH1 with a f1.4 pancake lens. Some of the last shots were with a Xacti CA8 (the difference in picture quality is fairly obvious).
In the local paper here there is a pic of a women crying in her short in the middle of destruction not knowing what she will do or what happened to her family . And the thought of your whole family gone and its just u no mother n Father sister brother cousin aunts uncle. And while she was crying there this person was taking a picture of her anguish instead of helping and them selfs to get back to civilization that is disgusting the person who took the the pic should be ashamed of themslef
thanks for putting out the vid.i am going to try to teach my mom how to use" use yt" so that she can see your vid...so that we don`t have to skype every 2 days>so she can stop being so worried about my situation in OSAKA.
Thats just the City. the outer land are crushed people are going out to do what they can ( in the Radiation ) no protection what so ever just help to things started ( and have some pice of mind that things will one day seen normal if that possiable . And it is snowing in the outer areas and cold. . this vid the people are lucky to walking arouind in good weather while others are suffering. And what is the Emperor doing? this vid is a joke from what is really going on.
Pretty good report, but I must take issue with your remark about gasoline that, "they are not causing long line like you might hear." I experienced long lines trying to get my car filled up in Tokyo after all of the service stations in my area in Tochigi ran out of gas. Don't know now, but a couple of days ago long gas lines were not a rumor. They were indeed a fact.
@japundit Hey Ed. Sorry, a good point - I am only commenting on what I see going round inside the Yamanote Line, which is probably the quietest part of Tokyo right now. I'm a train/bicycle guy, but none of the four or fave stations we drove past had any queues. Still, I have heard, and seen on the news images of queues in other parts of Kanto, particularly areas more dependent on cars in the suburbs.
Yeah, looks like back to normal to me. As much as it can be. But thats not what the world media wants it to be. Theres no $¥ in any of that.
IF you made a video that showed only the distruction and recounted the horror storys of survivors you could be famous. Keep making videos like these is going to get you ignored and labeled boring. LOL!!! Trueね But this is the real world so keep it up. These kinds of videos are way more important not to make than the other tripe.
Hahah!!! Thats right!!! Mc Donalds, the bane of the world!!! Great video. Even better camera/picture. Loved the shallow depth of field you used in the opener. Good way to obscure the innocent in the background. LOL!!!
ビデオ ありがとうございます、ひこさえもんーさん. Good to see a level-headed summary of how level-headed TKO is. Most journos from my country (Oz) have been reporting exactly same as you, ie a little quieter, but otherwise, relatively normal. The last thing Japan needs is sensationalist exaggerators. Jya.
@katmcdowell Hey Kat!!! Sorry for the slow reply. We're all fine here but thanks for the thought. Likewise, you know I'm always around if there is anything I can do to help you out there :)
Thank you posting! I wanted to see Tokyo from a resident's point of view instead of the press with the nuclear scare going on.....the press made it seem like Tokyo was a ghost town.
Glad to know you're well. Keep up the vids, I always enjoy watching them!
the most ridiculous thing I heard was that a bunch of Japanese ppl were going to immigrate to America. & then they were discussing on whether or not we should allow them into the country...lol ...ignorant...
Yeah that's right, I kinda knew there wasn't much going on in Tokyo aside from the random aftershocks here and there.. Thanks for proving it to the world!
That was great footage for those that are concerned with Tokyo. It looks nice and quiet there, for the most part. That is great, too bad about other places! Thanks for the video. And take care of yourself over there!
Than you so much for posting this video ! I am currently in Tokyo and I can't believe all the crap many foreign media are saying. Wish you good luck !
This is completely off topic, but the quality of this is really nice! Also thank you for the reassurance about the current state of Tokyo, my girlfriend and some friends are ithere at the moment, and the UK media's take on this situation only brings negative thoughts on it all and its quite scary even to watch. So thank you for showing this.... It is greatly appreciated. - Ashszu
ohhhh watta boring vid LOL... most dangerous place is the mcdonalds haha. Hope the little one gets better soon. The stuff they say on the news here is so infuriating, it's ridiculous. Wish I could be over there right now to be with my friends :( sucks being here unable to do anything!! Thx for all the updates and telling it like it is over there!... and my ex in the states now flipped out on me for telling her to stop watching CNN! :p i sent her the NHK link. thanks! Keep the updates coming!!
I saw the video of that horrific tsunami live just as I was getting ready to go to bed here on the west coast of the U.S. and have been following ever since. I'm so glad that Tokyo is doing well. Reports were that markets were out of food due to people stocking up with emergency supplies. I saw that there were alot of trucks out as you were driving around in the taxi. Are they getting re-stocked? Thanks for posting. Well wishes from one earthquake country to the other.
Great tp hear the winds are blowing from the West. Its hard to get a good idea of whats going on over there. Family & friends say everythings fine & at the same time the media are very adept at causing concern.....love the anti macca's sentiment. Its extra funny, coz by coincidence, my next vid has it too ; D
Ugh it's a shame Japan was destroyed by the Earthquake and Tsunami, they are very nice and smart people and I've always wanted to visit Downtown Tokyo and Disney land Tokyo :(
Thank you!to visit Japan and especially Tokyo it's my dream since j was a little boy!...j'm so worried ...j mean such a beautiful country can't be "ruined "by human stupidity(nuclear power plant)...anw ciao cheers greetings from Italy!
Yeah, some of the news in the UK here was making out Tokyo was becoming a ghost town because everyone is fleeing the city because of whats happening in Fukoshima.
The UK news have made a big deal out of it as usual even calling it "apocalyptic" -_-. I heard that Russia have sent quite a bit of gas to Japan so I guess that's good :). The weather looks really nice :)
Thanks for the update! Very helpful to know that it's almost back to normal.
I was planning my visit to Tokyo in May but was not certain with the quake, I'd feel as if I will be only a burden when people don't have place to stay or to eat. I wonder if you'd mind posting this in the forum of Japan guide? People are concerns about traveling to Japan and this might assure some of their concerns.
@aysharemei I also have been planning going to Japan, in particular Tokyo, later this year (Aug/Sept) time on a working holiday visa. However, as much as I still want to go I don't think I'll be able to so soon, if things do progress. Our Government (in the UK) are asking any British nationals in or north of Tokyo to consider leaving the area due to elevating radiation in that area. They may be exaggerating, and I think they are too. It still will be difficult to apply for a visa at this time...
Nice to see videos like this that reflect the actual state of things in Tokyo rather than the inaccurate sensationalist media floating around which has given a false impression and spread paranoia.
@hikosaemon check out 3:00 - do the green lights flash at epilepsy speed normally? or was it just the refresh rate and the camera making it look that way?
@Hikosaemon hey hiko thanks for commenting back and for the video update i wanted to go to japan this year i was wondering if its still possible to go?

Thank you posting! I wanted to see Tokyo from a resident's point of view instead of the press with the nuclear scare going on.....the press made it seem like Tokyo was a ghost town.
Glad to know you're well. Keep up the vids, I always enjoy watching them!

Ahhh,good to see!nice vid mate.
Do you plan on coming home for the world cup?(rugby)
peteynum1 11 months ago
the most ridiculous thing I heard was that a bunch of Japanese ppl were going to immigrate to America. & then they were discussing on whether or not we should allow them into the country...lol ...ignorant...
midori1 11 months ago
Yeah that's right, I kinda knew there wasn't much going on in Tokyo aside from the random aftershocks here and there.. Thanks for proving it to the world!

That was great footage for those that are concerned with Tokyo. It looks nice and quiet there, for the most part. That is great, too bad about other places! Thanks for the video. And take care of yourself over there!

Than you so much for posting this video ! I am currently in Tokyo and I can't believe all the crap many foreign media are saying. Wish you good luck !
lefabb 11 months ago

Trala52 11 months ago
Great tp hear the winds are blowing from the West. Its hard to get a good idea of whats going on over there. Family & friends say everythings fine & at the same time the media are very adept at causing concern.....love the anti macca's sentiment. Its extra funny, coz by coincidence, my next vid has it too ; D

Yeah, some of the news in the UK here was making out Tokyo was becoming a ghost town because everyone is fleeing the city because of whats happening in Fukoshima.
Retrosofer 11 months ago

Thanks :)
aysharemei 11 months ago
@aysharemei I also have been planning going to Japan, in particular Tokyo, later this year (Aug/Sept) time on a working holiday visa. However, as much as I still want to go I don't think I'll be able to so soon, if things do progress. Our Government (in the UK) are asking any British nationals in or north of Tokyo to consider leaving the area due to elevating radiation in that area. They may be exaggerating, and I think they are too. It still will be difficult to apply for a visa at this time...
CandyKoRn 11 months ago
Nice to see videos like this that reflect the actual state of things in Tokyo rather than the inaccurate sensationalist media floating around which has given a false impression and spread paranoia.

@hikosaemon check out 3:00 - do the green lights flash at epilepsy speed normally? or was it just the refresh rate and the camera making it look that way?
