gays should have there rights.i feel that gays should not force homosexual values on children that are not at legal age.i am not a harecore christian, but i know science.not a science point of view.it is fact that man and woman were designed to mate and produce offspring.that is the factual way of life that children should be taught.then after they are legal age, then they decide whether to go a alternative typeof relationship.dont protest through children,do the right thing.thats how you win.
I don't know if you've read the books but you should in the books God does not appear let alone die that is explicitly stated he is not god he is the first angel who told everyone he was the creator and god.
Joeyayoub. Instead of just spouting off from what you read in comments, please go do some research then come back with a voice that will be honoured.
Also Darwinism you say is not a religion. Well, let me ask you this. If evolution is a theory, just as is the Big Bang theory then having belief that any of these theories are the explanation of our existence then you have to have FAITH.
"Who are *we to judge him?". Well people who don't believe in an older man that hates God trying to manipulate minds of CHILDREN to believe the same as him.
If you think that is just absolutely fine for this man to do so then please explain why Joeyayoub.
Well, actually the burden of proof is on you, you're the one claiming there's something wrong.
But fine, if you must have your assertions challenged. The question is a moral one. It has to do with suffering. People being homosexual entails no suffering for you or me. Persecution of homosexuals entails suffering of homosexuals. That's pretty much what it comes down to.
Well, go read the interview instead of making your mind up on my words. Go and digest some of Pullmans interview when he states he wants to destroy God. To sit and promote there is no God to children with no proof other than his belief is WRONG. If Pullman is allowed, what is wrong with the bible?. It's have both or none?. You choose.
It's nothing about his homosexuality for crying out loud. It's about THE GOLDEN COMPASS. So stick the sympathy card away please. I have friends who are gay.
I thought you were talking about homosexuality here, my mistake.
As for the author trying to 'destroy God'I think trying to shatter people's delusions is a very good thing to do, He's trying to do you a favor. Religions have retarded the progress of science long enough.
"Who are *we to judge him?". Well people who don't believe in an older man that hates God trying to manipulate minds of CHILDREN to believe the same as him.
If you think that is just absolutely fine for this man to do so then please explain why Joeyayoub.
No but it does for the other two theories I mentioned. If you can point to me the facts I'll be blown away. Oh wait, you can't. I'll stick with theory with this one :P. The Big Bang theory lol well go take a read. It is widely known that one change could cause the whole theory to be rewritten. Doesn't seem so solid if that can happen.
lol, wow you bring nothing intelligent to a discussion. Anyone with anything intelligent to say would say it, you have nothing but the ability to spew insults. Your "saviour" would be embarrassed by you.
Christians allow themselves to indoctrinate children, you know why? Because they have God on their side. So they tell their children that god is on their side. God gives them that right. So they're right. God says so. It's right. They're not brainwashed. They're just right. Noone else is.
A friend showed me one of his Christian friend's status the other day. It said she was being tested by the devil. How did she know this? Because she had some hard times and she wasn't sure if she'd be able to go to the college where God wanted her to go.
My question...how do you know God wanted you to go there? It seems very convenient that God always wants them to go where they want to go. And Satan is always against that decision, if it's not working out.
It's sad really. Everyone gets confused and down hearted every now and then, and we could all use some comfort.
To postulate external reasons like the girl in your example did only takes the feeling away, the fact remains and to deal with the fact that life can be tough, dealing with reality on reality's terms is the only remedy.
Sounds like you rejected God not because of what JESUS said but because of how Christians act. That's tragic. It's the pharisee thing all over again.
I don't know if this makes you feel better, but I'm going to say a prayer for you. It sounds like you have a good grasp of scripture and you should listen to your heart again.
The problem is that I'm logical. I could almost take the stories of the bible, if they were true. But the NIV is based on the KJV which is based on a poor version of the bible. The earliest biblical text is from 300 CE & is very different in many aspects from what we have now, & it is likely that it is very different from what was originally written, seeing as how it took a good 100+ years for an actual professional scribes to start copying the bible.
So what we have isn't even technically the "original". And we have some letters and some gospels, there are many others that weren't included. Who's to say that those books aren't just as valuable and insightful. Maybe even more accurate. So to base my faith on a book that isn't trustworthy...is just...stupid.
ok god made adam and eve not adam and steve and the bible talks about homosexuals as an abomanation to the lord. people are not born gay its a choice because i dont believe god makes mistakes. and i dont judge gay people cause my uncle is gay.the bible talks about how when a man and a women are married they are combined as one. if god was ok with people being gay he would have said so in the bible.
No, the bible says nothing about homosexuals, as the word didn't exist in the original Hebrew. Second, I don't subscribe to your notion of God and since freedom of religion reigns in this country, why should I be subject to your notion of God if I don't believe in him. If you think I do, then if Buddhists were in power, would you feel that you should be required to live by Buddhist law? You haven't done any research into biblical history so you can't say anything about what is and isn't in it.
yeah like i said if god wanted gays he wouldve said so at least once in the bible but he dosent not even once does it mention that.being gay is wrong sorry if you dont like to hear that but its true.buddhist? please if you look up religion and just call out to god everyone will find out that god is real and except jesus
OMG, you are so right, and because he doesn't mention cars or airplanes or cell phones, we shouldn't have those either.
Oh and it's ACCEPT!!! Jeezus...learn how to spell, or you lose your point looking ridiculous.
Oh and in this country, we're allowed to believe in different religions, other than Christianity. My religion says gays are ok, so by not giving them their rights, you're denying them the respect that you expect.
really you think people make the choice how thick headed are you? well that means we are all bi sexual and i know i didnt wake up and go i want to be straight you didnt did you? anyway why would i go hey i want to be gay and not get married and have the Christian religion think i am going to hell? yea no
being gay is a choice cause i dont believe god makes mistakes. people chose to be gay cause something happens in their lifes or cause they are insecure about themselves.
1 Corinthians 6:1-6, it's not your place to judge first.
2nd, that verse has been mistranslated as their was no word for "homosexual" in Hebrew and it was referring to people who frequented prostitutes and the prostitutes themselves, it says nothing of normal gay relationships.
3rd, the KJV and all those based off of it are the most flawed in existence with many changes by bad scribes & those who changed it on purpose.
And your comment has nothing to do with the video.
I too regret the way people are indoctrinated. People, to a certain extent, have got it wrong, but whatever is, is; always has been, and will always remain so -and its status of being is not subject to how people react to it. Here's an idea to chew over. If at some point in time they discovered that the earth was actually cubic, and that all of the satellite pictures were hoaxes, would that mean that the earth had suddenly become cubic, or that it always had been, but we had never realised it?
"Like your message dude! Just so you know... I don't know any atheists who judge people based on their sexual orientation... keep up the research!"
When I was still a believer, I was a bigot. After becoming an atheist, I have yet to understand how I could even hold the positions I had back then (went to a Christian primary- and boarding school, and also... my father's a priest. Brainwash ALL the way).
If you continue to look into the history of Christianity as you are describing, you will find that there really isn't anything in it that is supported by evidence. The historicity of Jesus is something that can't even be demonstrated let alone the wild supernatural claims that have no support in reality. I wish you luck in your investigation of these claims.
this guy is gay so he is tried to figure out if he could still be a christian and be gay and still go to heaven. so he finds out that he cant.so now he is not a christian. ha that is so funy and sad for this guy.
its not good or bad, its how you do things. like if you go to a gay guy or say gays are going to hell because i dont understand them is silly a mean. you belive what you want you just have to be nice about it you know?
dude, jesus hung out with 12 guys. you think being gay will keep you out of heaven? really? 12 guys? as far as gay goes, jesus was one of the first documented homosexuals. evidence of this practice is found in most christian churches (alter-boy-toys) to this day.
if you want to get in heaven, i would suggest getting gay and getting gay fast.
Christianity, like most religion, is all about fear. Fear of sex, fear of science, fear of the unknown. It is amazing how rabidly Christians try to stamp out ideas which challenge the doctrines of their ancient desert scribblings. "God's truth" must be a very fragile thing to need protection from a mediocre film based on a children's novel.
this guy is totally wrong!! and about homesexuality is not about accepting who you are its accepting a demon in your life to ruin the bond god created between a man and a women!
The movie in someways speaks to kids that god can die(Which we all know is a evil message the devil is trying to convey).
The bible has no faults it does have some translation errors but no informational mistakes.
In addition the only source of God's word is in the bible, not other books!
Quite right, the bible does have translation errors and intentional "fixes" to the wording, based on earlier versions which may have been incorrect as well.
So, you base your faith off of a fallible document edited by fallible people, claim that it's divinely inspired, even tho I know, if I were God, and I put a list or rules down, I'd be damn sure that no humans changed it, but I guess God is a lil more easy going than that...right.
golden compass was the counterpoint to narnia, I didn't really think much of either movie, but its great to have this kind of thing out there. It enriches the marketplace of ideas to have both sides represented.
hmmm it is funny that (well not funny but ironic) these people get so angry when we say they indoctrinate their children then they go around saying it about athiests. at least we always trust what we believe. and it is ironic that they say how bad it is in iraq when a kid thinks theyre a marder because they are a suicide bomber. is it not the same?
how fitting that a christian chriticizezs us about bashing. and in the bible it says "father forgive them for they know not what they do." and considering the fact that christianity is based on "walking in jesus's foot steps" you sit there and criticize us. and you wonder why people call christians hypocryts (sorry if any of thats spelled wrong im kinda sleepy).
First off it says in the bible "god hates homosexuals". Also, where does it say you shouldn't criticize people. I must have missed that. Anyway, most of the criticizing is done by the bible, I'm simply informing you of it. "They know not what they do"? Well, now you know.
Finally, I am the farthest thing from a hypocrite and I find it funny that someone would call me as such for following the bible to a T(as much as humanly possible anyway). If I was a homo, sure, but no.
The bible also says "For god so loved THE WORLD that he gave his only son." I don't know how you define 'the world' but I believe it means everything WITHIN the world--not just the non-homosexuals, or the christians, etc. etc.
Now I'm not a homosexual, but I wonder what happens if one is a christian homosexual. Are they sent to hell just because of something they can't control? I think not.
I don't think its possible to follow the Bible to a T because there...
are so many contradictions within it--especially within the old testament--one moment god is seen as all loving, the next he wants people to go out and slaughter a community for him. The New Testament is the book I follow because it preaches love for all people... *ahem* "Love thy neighbor." I don't believe it says "Love thy neighbor. UNLESS THEY ARE A HOMOSEXUAL!"
No but the homosexual that practices sexual immorality will go to hell. if they are truly "genetically gay" then its not their fault..obviously god would take that into account.
Instead of making this a religious argument can you do a little research before replying to me as you're not even checking out the things I've wrote about?. Please study as I'm arguing with someone who doesn't really know what I'm talking about here and it's not quite fair to me to be honest. Harry Potter is meant to be a bad book but I don't agree but this film and Stardust ISN'T suitable for a young impressionable mind. They have got bad morals. If you can't see them I don't know how?.
They don't have bad morals. To the untrained eye, most won't notice anything but an interesting story. In the end, they may see that the authoritarian regime of the fundamentalists are outdated and in the end serve to harm humankind, and that we can all be good and decent without the looming authority and punishments.
Did you read the Phil Pullman interview?. Do you see how his beliefs will be projected onto kids?. He has had his life experiences to get him to how he believes today and everyone's journey is different in life and this is why I think how I do about this movie.
Your eyes are closed. Not only to religion but to what is happening in the world today. You need to realise that it's a lot bigger than just this book. Research Alice Bailey/Lucis Trust and you'll start to realise what I'm talking about.
Why are you afraid of children being exposed to Pullman's point of view ? It is because he is putting the reader in a position to view religion objectively. Your fear is that children have not yet been indoctrinated and religion does not stand up to nonpartisan, objective, rational examination. why do you want to perpetuate something that even an informed child would dismiss as nonsense ?
Afraid? :D. That I am not. If you cared to have read my other comments then you'd see that I think that a child should be able to live through their lives without being manipulated either way. Just because you would raise your children to THINK it was nonsense then that is your choice and I would be against that just as much as it should be their choice and not to have other people's views thrust on them. There is no proof that God does not exist so to push your beliefs on anyone is wrong.
A movie (which you have the free will to go and see) is not manipulation and certainly not indoctrination (Maybe not you but other people have called it that). I've seen both (and read) the Narnia chronicles (which has a very big undertone of christinity) and The Dark Matter (athist undertone) and I can't see what the big deal is.
If one called the golden compass manipulation, why not go out on a limb and call ALL storytelling manipulation.
I've noticed quite a few people mentioning that Narnia has a strong Christian undertone. If anything it's closer to paganism. I don't recall the part in the bible where people bowed down to animals and saw them as equals.
I did not make my children spend long hours being told that any unfounded belief was the truth. Nor did I put any effort into convincing them religion is nonsense. There is no experience a child, developing in a rational environment, can have to make the existence of a god an issue. What they did pick up from school etc. did not persuade them so I never had to 'deprogramme' them. Brain-washing is only necessary to persuade a rational mind to accept what it naturally would reject.
The difference here is your definition of logical. Both are set by very strong beliefs in their own religion. One being Christianity and the other being Darwinism.
Pullman does not have an objective view. He objects to religion entirely and wants everyone else to be in agreement that every religion other than Darwinism is false and should be abolished. Do as AntiAquarian asks and look at the interview.
Anyone that researches what I've written about below will see what Keith and I are on about. The writer does hate god though (or the idea of him) and would like children to see it his way which is a bit harsh to try and impose that on an impressionable mind - The bible and the teachings isn't really about in schools any more and I think that's fair enough but for him to try and teach the opposite to kids is just as bad as them getting forced to read the bible.
So publishing a book or a movie, is just as bad as forcing people to believe the way you believe. That would mean that all Christian books should be pulled from the shelves, and the Chronicles of Narnia should never be made into a movie, ya know, just to make it an even playing ground.
All I have written is for people to do their OWN research. Not to listen to me, but to check out the things I say and see if it is real. I said that Bible is out of School and that's fair enough??. Also Narnia had Blasphemy issues and taking the Lords name in vain associated with it. I've studied about that too. Instead of arguing with me, why don't you go and see if what I say is true?. Check out the UN's publication comapny The Lucis Trust ;).
But you didn't write that. You wrote that the writer hates god and that because of that his teachings are damaging to our children. If you were truly open minded, you would let the kids decide what does and doesn't work for them, and to find their own truth. The fact is as per your reference, that he has an atheist's outlook and doesn't see God as evil, but more what people do in the name of God and how people can be good without the threat of a looming punishment.
I wrote that he hates god and that is fact. He also would like this story to be used in education. I've given you the wording to find the interview. Have you checked the interview out?.
TV and the media is far too impressionable on today's society and subliminal messages are in films, TV shows and games. Everywhere. A softening up if you'd like to what is to become. New age will be everywhere and this movie will target the kids that will be young adults when this starts to take place.
The film wouldn't be worrying to me if I hadn't learned about Alice Bailey and her teachings. Please type this into google everyone, including you neverlookback75. "age of aquarian united nations" and check out the first two links. This is part of the United Nations for crying out loud. They have a meditation room for this INSIDE the building. Just look for yourself and then study Alice Bailey and Djwhal Kuhl. Also type this into Google "Philip Pullman -- the extended e-mail interview" and read.
I'd find a meditation room, much more acceptable than say, the ten commandments in front of a government building. Definitely less "state religion"-y. But somehow the fact that those types of things have happened, always fall out of Christian memory when something relatively minor comes up that they are threatened by.
It's inside the building, not in front of it?. Why are you bringing religion into it when this is New Age and about the government?. You've completely lost me with this reply?. I took the time to listen to your video and you rudely ignore everything I write and start talking about Christianity. Why?. If you studied what I'm asking you to then you will have a different view of this meditation room. Do a little research and then please come back and reply.
It sounds like a great idea, after looking up what it is, it sounds awesome. To have a place where people from different religions can come to reflect and to come to amazing realizations, is awesome. The age of aquarian aspect only seems to be focused more on not focusing on the fight between religion and science and focusing more on Independence and Universal Humanism. I don't see how focusing more on being a good human being and helping those around you could be considered bad.
I wish more people had your mindset. Too many people(myself included) have this inflated ego which forces them to believe that they are right on a topic no matter what. We don't all have to believe the same thing to get along, we just have to be willing to communicate and not discriminate in such a closed minded fashion.
The arguments over Golden Compass aren't just among Christians and Atheists. I'm a Christian, but even I know religion shouldn't control people's lives. Books and films don't make children do anything, but they do offer free thinking. That's why the religious authority hates this film. As a Christian, I'm ashamed of my religion for bashing this movie as severely as they have. Christianity must adapt to changes, or it will become an antiquated faith.
Ooo, this book is not about god dying. Its about a powerful angel that basicly gave itself the title of god (the authority as the book puts it). That angel is overthrown by another angel (metatron, sounds like a transformer no?) Both those angels die.
Christians should know by now...Everyone will never have the same beliefs systems. We need a god or teaching that does not discriminate by your choice of religion or lack of religion.
The whole reason for the CHURCH is about CONTROLLING the masses. Any person or groups that advocate any freedom of thought is a threat to them .. They cannot loose any tittance of control. Free thought is death to Catholicism. Even the people who have been brainwashed call them selves sheep. I call them zombies
Many good points neverlookback. You're correct about most people who criticise not even knowing what they're talking about. Whether you remain religious, or become atheist, you already understand how to research things before you make a decision.
An evil church headed by a false creator. While the true god is set free, because he was captured. If someone can't see this as fiction... they shouldn't have the right to tell me that the bible is real.
Yawn. You're misguided, deary. I feel badly for you and then I remember that we all have free will. It's unfortunate you choose this path. You know better.
the reasons Christians may seem "afraid" is because they don't want their kids falsely indoctrinated from what they see as truth. And the thing is, Christians don't take away rights from others, others take away rights from Christians. (Pledge of Allegiance, Bibles in schools, evolution being taught instead of creationism, banning ten commandments from public display, etc.)
Gay Marriage, Interracial Marriage, Slavery, Women's Rights, all of these were/are withheld because of supposedly biblical justification. The latter items you mention are Christianity trying to impose itself on the general public. You can teach your child your values and your beliefs. It's not a State religion, so it shouldn't be pushed upon others who don't have the same beliefs.
In regards to your mention of Christians not wanting their kids falsely indoctrinated, it's not a matter of indoctrination, it's a matter of, in most cases, people keeping their kids blindly unaware to the world around them. How can you prepare your kids for the world, when they've only seen the protective bubble? And if your way is truly the right way, why is it that you're so fearful that they'll immediately turn away when shown any other way?
Interesting.. I am a Christian.. I've been one for 10 years. AND Pullman is my favorite author BECAUSE everything he promotes IS what God is about: LOVE, TRUTH, BRAVERY, Etc...
Im sorry many Christians became afraid.I feel they were severely misinformed. No one should react on hearsay.
If something is real and strong and true.. why should there be any fear of the weaker power?
A parent has earned the right to pass on their beliefs to their children because they have sacrificed for that child, raised it, and loved it. Still the parents have a responsibility to censor what their kids see. Also, to the previous posts, this wasn't even about homosexuality, the fact that the use of the word gay in the pretext of his actual statements caused such posts is a perfect example of why there is typically such a gap between homosexual and Christian communities.
yea ur a gay, but that doesnt mean we have to hate gays, as long as they dont do anything to me and dont give me the looks, but other than that...im christian and im not a homophobe and dont wish they die nor should they go to hell..i think thats the viewpoint of one self, cus if we were to wish for their death its like sinning...christians should be peaceful
The bible is filled with rape, murder, incest. Where is the outrage in this?
"That God cannot lie, is no advantage to your argument, because it is no proof that priests can not, or that the Bible does not."
Don't forget the Old and New Testaments were written in Hebrew and Koine Greek, respectively; so unless Christians understand use or reference original versions, they are getting but a crude version.
You're right - Christians do indoctrinate their kids. Atheists do too. You bring your kids up in the way you feel is right. The message of Christianity - of Christ - is love, not fear. Christians who spread fear and condemnation are on the wrong track.
It is very healthy to question things and if some Christians can't take questioning, well, that just shows their insecurities. Keep questioning - it's your decision what you believe and WHY you believe it.
this was very enjoyable to watch, thanks for your ideas, you're definitely on the right path. i'd encourage the further research of the origins of the bible, once you really dig in, you realize how bizarre the cult following of Christianity really is.
This guy had some good stuff to say. He's right about the hypocrisy of Christians for attacking a movie for subverting their children; they've been subverting their children since their children were born.
They don't kill "God". The children find him to be imprisoned, weak in pain from being tortured. Unbeknowing of how weak he really is, the children release him from his bonds and he dissolves into "dust" becoming one with the world and universe. But before his "death" he shows love and grattiude towards to children for helping to release him from his bonds
I have read the Golden Compass and the other books by philip pullman and God does not die in the Books it is actually a very old angel who has fooled everyone into beliveing that he is god. So really the children kill a false god so the real god can come back and start everything over with an era of peace.
Poor medieval ignorants!. They abuse children, they tell Africans not to use condoms so they will die faster of AIDS, they contributed with the NAZIS, and not only, to kill and torture millions of people in Europe since the Middle Ages.
To whom are they trying to teach moral values?. That's pure crap.
it is anti christian that's offensive. If it were bashing muslims it would be a big deal right? but we alow this, it's wrong in general to base an entire movie on harming someones faith
Does it though? Do you even know what the movie is about? Have you read the books? Or have you just heard from others who heard that it says something bad about Christianity and because of that you hate it. That's my point is that more Christians are up in arms about a movie that he said she said was bad, rather than actually finding out what it's about.
excuse me, but when a christian move comes out or a book about christianity most of us are like well what ever let them believe what ever they want. so you can have the right to watch movies about your religion, but we cant.
I suspect there is a reason why *some* catholic christians feel threatened by movies that go against their belief, and why atheists are not. And I suspect this reason is that they're affraid, and atheists are not. And I think they're affraid partly because thay have power to lose, and partly because their faith is fragile. And I am sorry, but those are their problems, not our.
YOUR RIGHT! Religious addict is our #1 problem(righteous dogma). It controls millions of people through fear ...and the opiate continues to poison people's common sense, values and self worth. Religion is a crime against humanity (based on results). YES religion does do good things BUT ...so did Hitler! I'm for faith, prayer and introspection, but... ANY kind of violence is STILL violence, whether it be shock, shame or guilt ...(The)King James was gay too.
I hope there are many responses along this line. To see boycotts and protests held due to a fiction writings view of religion would be unjust. The country was built on freedom of religion, speech and thought, and it hurts to see repression of ideas allowed in a country based on freedom above all else.
If freedom of religion is so important, why is it that people are completely free to bash Christianity in schools, but one word for it, and you're out of line. THAT is unjust.
So kids can't read about the golden compass which has underlying messages about atheism, whereas, Narnia is part of curriculums and it is pro-Christianity, where is the freedom of religion in that!
The Narnia books do not preach the authors views in the way that His Dark Materials does. Sure the Narnia books are an allegory - but I think most children miss that anyway.
What you say is true. I've heard many tirades before against Christians. I've heard many people say that Christians are completely and blindly following a false thing. However that isn't true it isn't blindly following something.
Yes it is, when the majority of Christians haven't read the bible, don't understand the circumstances surrounding it's creation. The fact that it is not the divinely inspired words of God, as the words have been changed to support varying defenses of Christianity over the years.
Oh have you ever read "How to be your own selfish pig" its a good book that talks about Biblical things if you do get that you should also get um... oh right Light bearers
"Over the Years" Considering numerous texts have been found predating most of your supposed changes, this is a dangerous and irresponsible statement to make with no evidence backing it up. The dead sea scrolls predate Christ and represent the same text we have today in the Bible.
LoL, no they don't! Read any textual critic's look at the bible. Some may disagree on which changes were made where, but they all agree that the texts have been changed and are NOT what they originally were.
I have read plenty of critical literature on the Bible. The vast abundance of discrepancies are grammatical in nature. If you know of a specific doctrinal or even conceptual discrepancy please feel free to share it.
Thus, the words have been corrupted, so you can't know the original intent. So you're basing your belief on something that may or may not be what was originally intended to be said.
The words you read in the bible aren't what were originally written. The oldest texts available, the ones that were written 1 to 2 hundred years after the original text are likely to contain many mistakes because of how they were copied. The ones after those do contain many mistakes, there are hundreds if not thousands of versions of the bible,
actually they are there are many ancient texts that confirmed things from the Bible like when Joshua asked God to make the sun stop in the middle of the sky
Er, no actually, nothing confirms that. Most of the myths in the Bible were copied from older Mesopotamian and Egyptian myths, which isn't surprising, since those were dynamic, powerful cultures, while the Jews were a poor, backwaters tribe.
some containing minor typographical/translation errors, to large chunks of text which have been changed, added, or discarded because they didn't suit the theology of the day.
thank you for saying everything i'm thinking. I am so glad that you are researching your questions instead of just accepting and going by things that other people are telling you to believe... i wish more people could be as understanding as you are. :)
Plus - you can't research christianity by looking at texts. Judeo/Christian religion is passed down primarily as teachings from one generation to another. Only when second generation teachers were taking christianity further afield were the gospels penned (60-100 AD approx). In between you had anyone with an overactive imangination or an alternate agenda writing whatever they wanted. Spinning Christ into whatever form it suited themselve.
What a load of rubbish. Social network has nothing to do with true christianity. Its about building a relationship with God, and if this guy grew up and never developed any kind of interaction with God, then I am not suprised he thinks this way.
Exactly! I was a young dumb Christian, accepting everything I was spoon fed, then I started to do some research and realized that it takes worth to determine and develop your faith, and why shouldn't it if it's something so monumental you use it as the building block for your life.
gays should have there rights.i feel that gays should not force homosexual values on children that are not at legal age.i am not a harecore christian, but i know science.not a science point of view.it is fact that man and woman were designed to mate and produce offspring.that is the factual way of life that children should be taught.then after they are legal age, then they decide whether to go a alternative typeof relationship.dont protest through children,do the right thing.thats how you win.

That would make it into a religion.

MagicofAramis 2 years ago
Well, go read the interview instead of making your mind up on my words. Go and digest some of Pullmans interview when he states he wants to destroy God. To sit and promote there is no God to children with no proof other than his belief is WRONG. If Pullman is allowed, what is wrong with the bible?. It's have both or none?. You choose.
It's nothing about his homosexuality for crying out loud. It's about THE GOLDEN COMPASS. So stick the sympathy card away please. I have friends who are gay.
AntiAquarian 2 years ago
I thought you were talking about homosexuality here, my mistake.
As for the author trying to 'destroy God'I think trying to shatter people's delusions is a very good thing to do, He's trying to do you a favor. Religions have retarded the progress of science long enough.

No but it does for the other two theories I mentioned. If you can point to me the facts I'll be blown away. Oh wait, you can't. I'll stick with theory with this one :P. Christians allow themselves to indoctrinate children, you know why? Because they have God on their side. So they tell their children that god is on their side. God gives them that right. So they're right. God says so. It's right. They're not brainwashed. They're just right. Noone else is.
(oh and I'm being kind of sarcastic)

I noticed!

The problem is that I'm logical. I could almost take the stories of the bible, if they were true. But the NIV is based on the KJV which is based on a poor version of the bible. The earliest biblical text is from 300 CE & is very different in many aspects from what we have now, & it is likely that it is very different from what was originally written, seeing as how it took a good 100+ years for an actual professional scribes to start copying the bible.
neverlookback75 3 years ago
So what we have isn't even technically the "original". And we have some letters and some gospels, there are many others that weren't included. Who's to say that those books aren't just as valuable and insightful. Maybe even more accurate. So to base my faith on a book that isn't trustworthy...is just...stupid.

ok god made adam and eve not adam and steve and the bible talks about homosexuals as an abomanation to the lord. people are not born gay its a choice because i dont believe god makes mistakes. and i dont judge gay people cause my uncle is gay.the bible talks about how when a man and a women are married they are combined as one. if god was ok with people being gay he would have said so in the bible.
xxtexasboy956xx 3 years ago
No, the bible says nothing about homosexuals, as the word didn't exist in the original Hebrew. Second, I don't subscribe to your notion of God and since freedom of religion reigns in this country, why should I be subject to your notion of God if I don't believe in him. If you think I do, then if Buddhists were in power, would you feel that you should be required to live by Buddhist law? You haven't done any research into biblical history so you can't say anything about what is and isn't in it.
neverlookback75 3 years ago
yeah like i said if god wanted gays he wouldve said so at least once in the bible but he dosent not even once does it mention that.being gay is wrong sorry if you dont like to hear that but its true.buddhist? please if you look up religion and just call out to god everyone will find out that god is real and except jesus

So el fuck-o off-o.

xxtexasboy956xx 3 years ago

If you continue to look into the history of Christianity as you are describing, you will find that there really isn't anything in it that is supported by evidence. Christianity, like most religion, is all about fear. Fear of sex, fear of science, fear of the unknown. It is amazing how rabidly Christians try to stamp out ideas which challenge the doctrines of their ancient desert scribblings. Quite right, the bible does have translation errors and intentional "fixes" to the wording, based on earlier versions which may have been incorrect as well.
So, you base your faith off of a fallible document edited by fallible people, claim that it's divinely inspired, even tho I know, if I were God, and I put a list or rules down, I'd be damn sure that no humans changed it, but I guess God is a lil more easy going than that...right.

wah0089 3 years ago
First off it says in the bible "god hates homosexuals". Also, where does it say you shouldn't criticize people. I must have missed that. Anyway, most of the criticizing is done by the bible, I'm simply informing you of it. "They know not what they do"? Well, now you know.
Finally, I am the farthest thing from a hypocrite and I find it funny that someone would call me as such for following the bible to a T(as much as humanly possible anyway). If I was a homo, sure, but no.
NefariousPrior 3 years ago
Hmm... is that a direct quote?

AntiAquarian 4 years ago
They don't have bad morals. To the untrained eye, most won't notice anything but an interesting story. In the end, they may see that the authoritarian regime of the fundamentalists are outdated and in the end serve to harm humankind, and that we can all be good and decent without the looming authority and punishments.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
Did you read the Phil Pullman interview?. Do you see how his beliefs will be projected onto kids?. He has had his life experiences to get him to how he believes today and everyone's journey is different in life and this is why I think how I do about this movie.
Your eyes are closed. Not only to religion but to what is happening in the world today. You need to realise that it's a lot bigger than just this book. Research Alice Bailey/Lucis Trust and you'll start to realise what I'm talking about.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
Why are you afraid of children being exposed to Pullman's point of view ? It is because he is putting the reader in a position to view religion objectively. Your fear is that children have not yet been indoctrinated and religion does not stand up to nonpartisan, objective, rational examination. why do you want to perpetuate something that even an informed child would dismiss as nonsense ?
digitaljez 4 years ago
Afraid?
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
A movie (which you have the free will to go and see) is not manipulation and certainly not indoctrination (Maybe not you but other people have called it that). I've seen both (and read) the Narnia chronicles (which has a very big undertone of christinity) and The Dark Matter (athist undertone) and I can't see what the big deal is.
If one called the golden compass manipulation, why not go out on a limb and call ALL storytelling manipulation.
Tjarn110 4 years ago
I've noticed quite a few people mentioning that Narnia has a strong Christian undertone. If anything it's closer to paganism. I don't recall the part in the bible where people bowed down to animals and saw them as equals.

I did not make my children spend long hours being told that any unfounded belief was the truth. Nor did I put any effort into convincing them religion is nonsense. There is no experience a child, developing in a rational environment, can have to make the existence of a god an issue. What they did pick up from school etc. did not persuade them so I never had to 'deprogramme' them. Brain-washing is only necessary to persuade a rational mind to accept what it naturally would reject.

rugby16161616 3 years ago
The difference here is your definition of logical. Both are set by very strong beliefs in their own religion. One being Christianity and the other being Darwinism.
NefariousPrior 3 years ago 2
Pullman does not have an objective view. He objects to religion entirely and wants everyone else to be in agreement that every religion other than Darwinism is false and should be abolished. Do as AntiAquarian asks and look at the interview.
NefariousPrior 3 years ago 2
Anyone that researches what I've written about below will see what Keith and I are on about. The writer does hate god though (or the idea of him) and would like children to see it his way which is a bit harsh to try and impose that on an impressionable mind - The bible and the teachings isn't really about in schools any more and I think that's fair enough but for him to try and teach the opposite to kids is just as bad as them getting forced to read the bible.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
So publishing a book or a movie, is just as bad as forcing people to believe the way you believe. That would mean that all Christian books should be pulled from the shelves, and the Chronicles of Narnia should never be made into a movie, ya know, just to make it an even playing ground.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
forcing people to believe the way you believe.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
But you didn't write that. You wrote that the writer hates god and that because of that his teachings are damaging to our children. If you were truly open minded, you would let the kids decide what does and doesn't work for them, and to find their own truth. The fact is as per your reference, that he has an atheist's outlook and doesn't see God as evil, but more what people do in the name of God and how people can be good without the threat of a looming punishment.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
I wrote that he hates god and that is fact. He also would like this story to be used in education. I've given you the wording to find the interview. Have you checked the interview out?.
TV and the media is far too impressionable on today's society and subliminal messages are in films, TV shows and games. Everywhere. A softening up if you'd like to what is to become. New age will be everywhere and this movie will target the kids that will be young adults when this starts to take place.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
The film wouldn't be worrying to me if I hadn't learned about Alice Bailey and her teachings. Please type this into google everyone, including you neverlookback75. "age of aquarian united nations" and check out the first two links. This is part of the United Nations for crying out loud. They have a meditation room for this INSIDE the building. Just look for yourself and then study Alice Bailey and Djwhal Kuhl. Also type this into Google "Philip Pullman -- the extended e-mail interview" and read.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
I'd find a meditation room, much more acceptable than say, the ten commandments in front of a government building. Definitely less "state religion"-y. But somehow the fact that those types of things have happened, always fall out of Christian memory when something relatively minor comes up that they are threatened by.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
It's inside the building, not in front of it?. Why are you bringing religion into it when this is New Age and about the government?. You've completely lost me with this reply?. I took the time to listen to your video and you rudely ignore everything I write and start talking about Christianity. Why?. If you studied what I'm asking you to then you will have a different view of this meditation room. Do a little research and then please come back and reply.
AntiAquarian 4 years ago
It sounds like a great idea, after looking up what it is, it sounds awesome. To have a place where people from different religions can come to reflect and to come to amazing realizations, is awesome. The age of aquarian aspect only seems to be focused more on not focusing on the fight between religion and science and focusing more on Independence and Universal Humanism. I don't see how focusing more on being a good human being and helping those around you could be considered bad.

That angel is overthrown by another angel (metatron, sounds like a transformer no?) Both those angels die.

neverlookback75 4 years ago
the reasons Christians may seem "afraid" is because they don't want their kids falsely indoctrinated from what they see as truth. And the thing is, Christians don't take away rights from others, others take away rights from Christians. (Pledge of Allegiance, Bibles in schools, evolution being taught instead of creationism, banning ten commandments from public display, etc.)
CLEndicott 4 years ago
Gay Marriage, Interracial Marriage, Slavery, Women's Rights, all of these were/are withheld because of supposedly biblical justification. The latter items you mention are Christianity trying to impose itself on the general public. You can teach your child your values and your beliefs. It's not a State religion, so it shouldn't be pushed upon others who don't have the same beliefs.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
In regards to your mention of Christians not wanting their kids falsely indoctrinated, it's not a matter of indoctrination, it's a matter of, in most cases, people keeping their kids blindly unaware to the world around them. How can you prepare your kids for the world, when they've only seen the protective bubble? And if your way is truly the right way, why is it that you're so fearful that they'll immediately turn away when shown any other way?

Don't forget the Old and New Testaments were written in Hebrew and Koine Greek, respectively; so unless Christians understand use or reference original versions, they are getting but a crude version.
amindbody 4 years ago
You're right - Christians do indoctrinate their kids. Atheists do too. You bring your kids up in the way you feel is right. The message of Christianity - of Christ - is love, not fear. Christians who spread fear and condemnation are on the wrong track.
It is very healthy to question things and if some Christians can't take questioning, well, that just shows their insecurities. Keep questioning - it's your decision what you believe and WHY you believe it.

you made some good points
its funny how we're thrown into mass fright and shock over a watered down movie eh?
ConH25 4 years ago
this was very enjoyable to watch, thanks for your ideas, you're definitely on the right path. i'd encourage the further research of the origins of the bible, once you really dig in, you realize how bizarre the cult following of Christianity really is.
malarkeynshin 4 years ago
This guy had some good stuff to say. He's right about the hypocrisy of Christians for attacking a movie for subverting their children; they've been subverting their children since their children were born.

I wonder if his parents put him up to this?
They don't kill "God". The children find him to be imprisoned, weak in pain from being tortured. Unbeknowing of how weak he really is, the children release him from his bonds and he dissolves into "dust" becoming one with the world and universe. But before his "death" he shows love and grattiude towards to children for helping to release him from his bonds
Jeankee 4 years ago
its a movie where a polar bear wears armor.
OH NO!!!!! a polar bear is going to kill god!!! GAY
jrocker35 4 years ago
I have read the Golden Compass and the other books by philip pullman and God does not die in the Books it is actually a very old angel who has fooled everyone into beliveing that he is god. So really the children kill a false god so the real god can come back and start everything over with an era of peace.
ipsebo 4 years ago 2
Poor medieval ignorants!. They abuse children, they tell Africans not to use condoms so they will die faster of AIDS, they contributed with the NAZIS, and not only, to kill and torture millions of people in Europe since the Middle Ages.
To whom are they trying to teach moral values?. That's pure crap.
mijimindo 4 years ago
who are you talking about
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
it is anti christian that's offensive. If it were bashing muslims it would be a big deal right? but we alow this, it's wrong in general to base an entire movie on harming someones faith
claybilly 4 years ago
Does it though? Do you even know what the movie is about? Have you read the books? Or have you just heard from others who heard that it says something bad about Christianity and because of that you hate it. That's my point is that more Christians are up in arms about a movie that he said she said was bad, rather than actually finding out what it's about.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
excuse me, but when a christian move comes out or a book about christianity most of us are like well what ever let them believe what ever they want. so you can have the right to watch movies about your religion, but we cant.
wah0089 4 years ago
Exactly! it seems we can't hace the same right.
I suspect there is a reason why *some* catholic christians feel threatened by movies that go against their belief, and why atheists are not. And I suspect this reason is that they're affraid, and atheists are not. And I think they're affraid partly because thay have power to lose, and partly because their faith is fragile. And I am sorry, but those are their problems, not our.
galadriel22 4 years ago
yes, and why be so afraid if there is a god then wont he protect you from it. doesnt it say that somewhere in the bible?
wah0089 3 years ago
ANY kind of violence is STILL violence, whether it be shock, shame or guilt ...(The)King James was gay too.

right on about everything...i agree 100%
luckynumbr13 4 years ago
I hope there are many responses along this line. To see boycotts and protests held due to a fiction writings view of religion would be unjust. The country was built on freedom of religion, speech and thought, and it hurts to see repression of ideas allowed in a country based on freedom above all else.
voidhawkSL 4 years ago
If freedom of religion is so important, why is it that people are completely free to bash Christianity in schools, but one word for it, and you're out of line. THAT is unjust.
FireFalco21 4 years ago
Aww poor christians. "95% of the US population identifies as Christian, but wahhh, we're being repressed...wahhhh"
neverlookback75 4 years ago
So kids can't read about the golden compass which has underlying messages about atheism, whereas, Narnia is part of curriculums and it is pro-Christianity, where is the freedom of religion in that!
hockeygurl31 4 years ago
The Narnia books do not preach the authors views in the way that His Dark Materials does. Sure the Narnia books are an allegory - but I think most children miss that anyway.
Light2North 4 years ago
What you say is true. I've heard many tirades before against Christians. I've heard many people say that Christians are completely and blindly following a false thing. However that isn't true it isn't blindly following something.
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
Yes it is, when the majority of Christians haven't read the bible, don't understand the circumstances surrounding it's creation. The fact that it is not the divinely inspired words of God, as the words have been changed to support varying defenses of Christianity over the years.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
what do you mean when you talk about creation
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
When the bible was created. When the books for the bible were chosen out of those available, a number of centuries after the books were written.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
so what other books are there...
Oh have you ever read "How to be your own selfish pig" its a good book that talks about Biblical things if you do get that you should also get um... oh right Light bearers

misquoting Jesus?

That's the name of one of the books I read.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
"Over the Years" Considering numerous texts have been found predating most of your supposed changes, this is a dangerous and irresponsible statement to make with no evidence backing it up. The dead sea scrolls predate Christ and represent the same text we have today in the Bible.
slumpycs6 4 years ago
LoL, no they don't! Read any textual critic's look at the bible. Some may disagree on which changes were made where, but they all agree that the texts have been changed and are NOT what they originally were.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
I have read plenty of critical literature on the Bible. The vast abundance of discrepancies are grammatical in nature. If you know of a specific doctrinal or even conceptual discrepancy please feel free to share it.
slumpycs6 4 years ago
Have you read Misquoting Jesus by Bart D. Ehrman? Yea...give that one a spin.
Aces87 4 years ago
Thus, the words have been corrupted, so you can't know the original intent. So you're basing your belief on something that may or may not be what was originally intended to be said.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
when you say the words have been corrupted do you mean in the Bible
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
The words you read in the bible aren't what were originally written. The oldest texts available, the ones that were written 1 to 2 hundred years after the original text are likely to contain many mistakes because of how they were copied. The ones after those do contain many mistakes, there are hundreds if not thousands of versions of the bible,
neverlookback75 4 years ago
actually they are there are many ancient texts that confirmed things from the Bible like when Joshua asked God to make the sun stop in the middle of the sky
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
That is the Old Testament, I'm pointing to the New.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
Er, no actually, nothing confirms that. Most of the myths in the Bible were copied from older Mesopotamian and Egyptian myths, which isn't surprising, since those were dynamic, powerful cultures, while the Jews were a poor, backwaters tribe.
seathanaich 4 years ago
some containing minor typographical/translation errors, to large chunks of text which have been changed, added, or discarded because they didn't suit the theology of the day.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
thank you for saying everything i'm thinking. I am so glad that you are researching your questions instead of just accepting and going by things that other people are telling you to believe... i wish more people could be as understanding as you are. :)

I LOVE THIS! way to get it right on. glad you posted :)
malsophlauragrace 4 years ago
Plus - you can't research christianity by looking at texts. Judeo/Christian religion is passed down primarily as teachings from one generation to another. Only when second generation teachers were taking christianity further afield were the gospels penned (60-100 AD approx). In between you had anyone with an overactive imangination or an alternate agenda writing whatever they wanted. Spinning Christ into whatever form it suited themselve.
havock89 4 years ago
What a load of rubbish. Social network has nothing to do with true christianity. Its about building a relationship with God, and if this guy grew up and never developed any kind of interaction with God, then I am not suprised he thinks this way.
havock89 4 years ago
w00t...someone who knows something... those athiest idiots are trying to kill a god they don't belive in? How gay is that!
blader1176 4 years ago
Religion does not want you to research because thats where it begins to lose itsfoundation.
bd593 4 years ago
Exactly! I was a young dumb Christian, accepting everything I was spoon fed, then I started to do some research and realized that it takes worth to determine and develop your faith, and why shouldn't it if it's something so monumental you use it as the building block for your life.
neverlookback75 4 years ago
a young dumb Christian???? When?
cutelittlepuppies 4 years ago
My entire life up 'til about 22 or so. I continued to carry on similar beliefs until mid 20s or so.
