wow, i'm gonna take my perfect pitch, performance degree from Indiana University, and my 26 years of teaching music and go buy some ears! I love almost everything I've heard moffo record(here on youtube) - and I know what I like, having listened to opera for over 35 years. for instance, I loved the donna anna last night at the met - best Non mi dir I've ever heard live. perhaps if you don't like anna moffo, you should not listen to her - countless thousands do....oh, and I've always loved Gedda!
A somehat truncated version by two verses - but at least Moffo actually sings the trill between the A and B sections that Callas herself didn't do. And what wonderful coloring! That staccato on the high C# in the coda was superb as a contrast to the other more expressive phrases sung in full voice.
@NEBESHIKU I feel we owe it to the rest of youtube [and to Anna Moffo] to continue this off the site, so if you would like to go another round please contact me at 555jd555 [at] gmail [dot] com thanks
@NEBESHIKU I respectfully disagree with you. And I am sure Rossini would have approved Moffo singing Una Voce in the range that suited her voice. Her coloratura in this aria is needle sharp, and there is wonderful characterisation.
@jd7x7jd ... i'm sure he would do so too, as long as she puts out afterwards. He would look at her and imagine what good things she could do with that mouth because singing is not one of them.
@AliciaDupres i am certain she (Callas) is much better Rusalka then Popp, not to mention that she is definitely much better Boris than Shalyapin - lol
What a wonderful job Ms. Moffo does singing "Mercè dillette amiche" from Giuseppe Verdi's opera "I vespri siciliani". This is perfection..original, magnifique and unique.
@maestromuffin1 She never had the voice for Trovatore. This was paticularly ridiculous as was her wole Verdi recording!!!, Even in Vespre Siciliani, she doesn't make any sense. People should buy ears!!!!!!!
Happy New Year, everyone! I had to come back for another helping of La Moffo...this is one fine performance, I'd be wrong to not say so. Joyous, emotionally involved with the text, clean fioritura, capped with a well-placed High-E!!! What more could you want?
If a soprano sang like this at the Met today, it would be a miracle. Actually, I rather like Sondra Radvonsovski, but she isn't in this league. Aprille Millo is stellar, but in the more spinto roles, like Elisabetta and Aida. And Netrebko just doesn't have the agility
It's so true....we do not have any more "authentic & unique" timbres anymore...The massification of the technique( or whatever they are doing at universities mainly in NORTH AMERICA) destroyed that type of individualism in all sopranos...really!
Well, the North American schools have made quality vocal training available to the masses like no other region has done. As a result, people who are modestly talented can still produce a technically superior enough sound to have careers. It could be that hiring practices aren't allowing for us to hear authentic & unique timbres on the centre stage, because the packages that house these voices aren't considered appealing to those who are hiring.
I agree. with the advent of HD broadcasts, there seems to be an increasing amount of casting being done on the basis of looks first/singing second, rather than vice versa. I'm all in favor of hot young things on stage (especially barihunks and hunkentenors!), but if the singing isn't good, it ruins the opera. On the other hand, if the singing is fabulous, I can always close my eyes and ignore the package. Now if I could only get a job casting opera.
I guess you are right....the voices that sound unique are out there yes,,,,in Europe mainly, coming from Bulgaria, Russia but not from Canada or USA. There were voices from the USA that are amazing: June Anderson, Shirely Verrett, Jessye Norman to name a few, but the first 2 made a huge carreer abroad and not necessarily in their home base. I would certainly love to hear more Verretts, Andersons voices around.
That's where we start disagreeing.I heard Angela Meade here in Montreal and it is YES a great technique that she has and a big instrument-But for me she's exactly what I call "cookie cutter" sound. There's no 'instantly recognizable timbre. If you put her togehter with other sopranos I could not 'pick' her voice form the rest. But that's just my opinion I like as Zajick said once: "the odd balls" Meade calls herself a dramtico coloratura! For me today there's one name: Alexandrina Pendatchanska
@BetuliaLiberata there are Verrett's and Andersons (in terms of unique voices) all around the U.S. I have heard them first hand...but in the US casting and opera in general...if you don't "look the part" (whatever that means), you don't get hired in a MAJOR house often. meaning that chances are if you aren't HOT, aren't THIN, aren't IN SHAPE, aren't WHITE, chances are you will struggle a bit.
There is something beautiful in her very marshalled technique that I find is fundamentally missing in today's singers. I lurrrv how she utilizes her voice.
YES MA'AM!!!! Anna delivered the goods on this one, no doubt. I always liked her sense of style and timing. It's everything with a piece filled with roulades and trills like this one. Her keen sense of musicality makes this bolero/siciliana say something meaningful. I've only heard three other sopranos deliver the goods on this aria, both vocally and dramatically: Maria Callas, Beverly Sills (minus High E) and Renée Fleming. Thanks for posting!
I agree with you, except that I would add Angela Gheorghiu to this list. I have her Verdi Heroines CD and she has everything in this aria: her well-known instantly recognizable rich voice, wonderful coloraturas, drama and emotion. And of course, I can't omit her great co-national, another great Romanian diva, Virginia Zeani as another remarkable interpreter of the aria.
If you mean upload other arias from her MYSTERIUM CD (except the ones I already uploaded), I can do that, but, when the Verdi Heroines CD is concerned, I have it, but it is not with me where I am now momentarily. I am glad you like my comments.
Moffo excelled in virtually everything she sang from Verdi and Puccini to Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini as well as Mozart, French opera, and operetta. Her voice, basically a lyric soprano, had coloratura agility and dramatic capability.
FANTASTIC. This is such a difficult aria, with all the coloratura and those high notes that need to be plucked out of the air. Anna does it all, with a high E to cap it off!

@NEBESHIKU Hmm you seem to have some issues about women who are both talented and beautiful. Could I ask what your own particular talents are? :)

@NEBESHIKU This is certainly not Moffo at her best. But have you heard her Una Voce? It's absolutely wonderful. :)
