  • Well hello everyone. I am so proud to say now I know where my singing roots come from. I remember my grandmother mentioning her name, well my aunt recently revealed to me that Ms. Phillips and my grandmother are cousins. Thanks for the gift Ms Phillips.

  • i like this song i heard it on the cosby show once it beautiful i;ts a lovely song sit back relax and enjoy i also like big maybell;s version too very nice 'chetta '

  • i love this song

  • i just fell in love when listening candy, lady esther was the best singer ever, unfortunately as it happens to all our best singers, she left us so early.

  • I've loved Esther Phillips for decades...she has been astonding since her early years with Johnny Otis...but I had never heard this before tonight. Sublime!!! And has anyone heard her do the old Blind Lemon Jefferson song "Graveyard Blues/See That My Grave is Kept Clean? Someone played it for me years ago but I've been unable to find it since...

  • She just made sweet love to my mind......

  • She just made sweet love to my mind......

  • when she started talking i thought it was macy gray for a second...

  • esther; an original rapper! :D (see also "black eyed blues" or "georgia rose")

  • I've waited years to find and hear my Esther sing Candy again. I owned this album when it came out and wore it out. I love love love me some Esther Phillips. Thanks for making my day, nite and week!

  • Love her.

  • YOU BETTA BREAK IT DOWN, ESTHER!!!....SING YO' SONG, BITCH!!!!

  • He's so sweet he'll make candy lay donw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OOoowwwww!! that was and Of course the original version by Big Maybelle was back in the day wen callin a man "Sweet" wasn't offensive!! There's nothing like the love of a strong man...who is sweet on and to his lady!! ((I have an old soul yall...lol..cus I'm only in my early 30s))

  • wasn't until I watched the cosby show that I remembered this song. had to look it up once it went off. love this song and how it shows a woman unafraid of loving a man!

  • OMG I surely can relate...you see when a man is just soooooo sweet. Its scary and usually a bunch of bull...Oh but it feels soooo good almost worth the almost certain pain.

  • Esther still lives for those lucky ones who were around to see her live and hear her on the radio. Today, her influences resound in so many singers that followed her, such as Diane Schuur.

Enjoy her art and genius and please pass it on.

  • she's a female barry white

  • One of the greatest little-known singers...too bad her life ended in such hardship. She deserved the best. I believe when Aretha won one of her Grammys, she turned around and gave Esther hers, for "From a Whisper to a Scream," which Aretha felt should have won.

  • did everyone listen to the big maybelle version of candy?

  • I adore her voice and it hits a nerve in my soul. She makes me melt into a puddle of butter on the floor. A friend of mine gave me an album of hers back in the 1970's, it was called "A Good Black is Hard to Crack" and I am unable to locate it anywhere. There were a couple of songs on there I recall: Pull Yourself Together, and Crazy, and I would give a kingdom to hear her sing them again. The memories that evokes from hearing her sweet voice again is most wonderful. Sweet Sweet Esther!!

  • @khataroo Great news...just finished a review on Amazon & listening to new 2-fer CD "Here's Esther, Are You Ready?" & "Good Black Is Hard To Crack" and this is what great music & singing from the soul is all about...enjoy!

  • @bradly2007 That is great news! Thank you for telling me. I bought the vinyl record "A Good Black is Hard to Crack" from Amazon and I even converted it so I could post them.

  • @khataroo Finally 70's-80's major releases from Esther are on CD and the other not to miss 2fer "You've Come A Long Way, Baby"/"All About Esther Phillips" is incredibly great and listening to it all day...nobody like Esther, enjoy!

  • @bradly2007 Wow! How exciting! I will definitely check them out. Again, thank you so much for informing me.

  • I wait for the day that a reincarnation of esther is born to witness the soulfulness of this lady again......

  • all right now...sang that song now...

  • There is something about her voice that massages my heart.

  • @cdjblue52 ... I truly agree with you.

  • @cdjblue52

I love your description, "her voice massages my heart!"

  • yeah, so much missed, princess

  • great song, she was great

  • The man maybe treating you right, but that don't mean he's gonna hang around.

The test really is time, and so you wait awhile before letting him know he's the One.

Goddam, I'm a man done started talking like a woman!

  • Help, I love Esther Philipis and a friend of mine had a few of her CD's that were released internationaly and there was a song I loved but i cant find it anywhere. If anybody knows please send me a message. Here are some of the lyrics if i can remember correctly... • @2hot711 You and me both. Esther was someone so very, very, special.

  • Love you Esther Phillips and love this tune.

    Rest in peace honey.

  • Esther Phillips left us 25 years ago today (8/7/84)

  • I want to thank you for posting this song. I have always loved her rendition.

  • If Dinah Washington were alive in the seventies, she would sound just like this.Esther gave "Candy" (and old standard) such a different delivery and I loved that.

  • Comment removed

  • I used to work as a dj at a club in Nelson, BC, and would play this song so people could dance close..

  • "Candy" by Esther from Capicorn Princess is a riveting killer track...nobody could come close to this greatness & amazing this masterpiece is still not on CD...come on Music Industry, get with it!

  • Esther was one of my favs. I like her version and I also Love the original by Big Maybelle. They both did nice interpretations.

  • Big Maybelle was NO joke.

    Their versions have different feelings.

    I like them both.

  • yo can u add some more Esther Phillips from the 70's She is Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is great., I am more of a jazz person, but I like this.

  • I still remember buying the Capricorn Princess album, rushing home, dimming the lights, lying on my bed, closing my eyes and listening to it. I loved it, but when "Candy" came on last it was goosebumps all over. Pure Esther. I will never stop loving her.

  • This takes me back to 1976 in NYC

at Lincoln Center with ESTHER PHILLIPS!

I always loved the CAPRCORN PRINCESS album and this is certainly

one of my favorite songs! I love the cover
