This is, for all intents and purposes, a medieval piece played with slightly different instruments. I hear a bombard (or something like a bombard or oboe) and I see a hurdy gurdy, both of which are folk instruments that originate in the middle ages.
This is wonderful! Discovered this music 15years ago & this is the first time I've actually seen a live performance of theirs. And recorded on my b-day, nogal ;)
DcD is melodic light goth... but who cares... seriously... love the music, labels are for consumer goods, not art.
I was a radio DJ and did one of the best dark progressive rock shows in New England from 1986 to 1988, the heyday of this stuff, and played tons of DcD,
Oooh, I saw this on 120 minutes with David Kendoll. Oooooh genius. Clever. The best musicians ever. Even Stravinsky sucks compared to this. This is the most captivating and culturally relevant music of the past millenium. I'm just wondering when they're going to make Brendan Perry the culture minister of the Czech Republic? Their website with "merchandise Shop" at the top is such an astute comment on post-modern consumer society. When will the masses realize they are mere sheep?
So, this little douchebag jonvanflan spends his time writing paragraphs as to why DCD is not legitimate music. I suppose he's the very definition of in internet "troll"? I had to block him from sending me angry personal messages; perhaps he needs a hobby...
Ha. Nice trying lying douchebag. I blocked you a good week before your tit-for-twat move. So you listen to pompous, overrated (but actually pretty good) music and you're a fake, lying douchebag... all in one convient pigskin! What a remarkable human being!
This entire discussion is so meaningless that it's hilarious. Than again, that often happens when hipsters attempt to argue over which one of them is more focused on appearance than the other.
Is that chapter of music history in a book that only you own? Because most musicologists wouldn't really even write a sentence on DCD. It's nice music to relax to...
i think you took me too seriously. obviously there are so many better artists, but i meant that they created something really big and important for the music which followed and so many artist wouldn't be here if they didn't exist. and by the way, they are a chapter in the story of my music, so well, if you don't like them why do you comment?
I do say they're good music to relax too, but quite honestly, you'll find better composition and musical skills in death metal... and even better stuff in progressive rock. They're more like Eno-esque kind of stuff -- atmospheres more than substantial music. I think Cage also did this well, but I'm not crazy about his compositions. They're signed to 4AD -- it's a bunch of shoegaze/gothy kind of bands that pay too much attention to their hair, in my opinion.
One criticism of this genre is that it is pretentious and I find the people who listen to this music are often pretentious. I have a friend who listens to shoegaze and post-rock, and thinks anything aggressive like metal is just bad musicianship (he's actually a bad musician, so he wouldn't know). Actually, metal musicians are top notch. Jordan Rudess is one of the best keyboard players ever and is compared to Wakeman and Emerson. Tomas Haake does some of the most impossible ambidexterous drumin
I don't agree with your friend, I adore metal and Dead Can Dance are some of the few non-metal bands I listen to. There are surely great music players, but for me, they're great, and I know that many people will agree with me because they are talented from an objective point of view and I think you can say you don't like them, but you can't say Lisa has a bad voice, or Brendan is not original.
I know. I'm not as clever as you DCD fanatics. Such cultured intellectuals... DCD is just pearls before a swine... Oh, the pain and tragedy of it all. 4AD records goth shoegaze intellectualism. Oh Morrissey where art thou? Oh Robert Smith and your brilliant Love Cats, ba da da da da di da da. Move over Sun Ra, Robby Smith is the jazzmaster and goth intellectual... Oh, Killing an Arab is based on The Stranged by Camus. So fucking clever!!!
So 'Killing an Arab' is now represents the pinnacle of goth music now? Definitely news to me and honestly i've never been much of a fan of that particular song, but that's where idiotic suppositions can lead people. As for the 'fanatic' part, you seem to have a godly ability to derive so much about a person's music taste from a single sentence. I love too many things to just be tied down to just being 'goth'.
Ha! I got you to admit that DCD is goth... Bella Lugosi's dead, the bats have left the bell tower, their victims have been bled, red velvet lines... So, do you live in the greater Tampa, FL area? Work at Cinnebon, perchance? That's cool. I mean, if I worked retail and could only afford a few CDs, I may very well consider DCD to be the best band I ever heard. I have to consider that not everyone has the advantages I do...
Did I ever say that DCD is/is not goth? You really are the master of suppositions; you know too little about me, you negate the fact that most people don't simply listen to only 'goth' and 'shoegazey' music. I live in Sydney, Australia in fact, lol, not quite the most 'goth' place in the world. It's one thing to like a band and it's another to bag out a band or their fans, honestly your arguments aren't coherent enough to win anyone over.
DCD are a decent band and I like some of their stuff. It's most of their fans that suck. It seems that you think everything I post here revolves around you, which is the problem with some DCD fans. It's like they found this band, that's pretty good, and they gave up on discovering music. I would imagine this band isn't fond of most of their fans, because they are often mindless, sychophantic sheep. You negate yourself by calling me the master of suppositions -- you are really a suppository...
Coming from one who blindly labels others as 'douchebags', your response has very little justification. The impression that I receive from your earlier posts implies that you regard ALL fans to be mindless and 'goths'. Just because I say that I like this band, makes me a self-centered person, so listening to black metal would make me a corpse-paint-loving maniac? Clearly not. Though it is an improvement to see you correcting yourself by saying 'some' and not generalising so much.
Yeah, that's right. They're jazz fusion. Or maybe unclassifiable, because they're such brilliant artists? They write some nice, atmospheric tunes, use some nice grandpas guitars. and have nice voices. They're part of the goth/shoegaze sound. They're on 4AD, and everyone I know that likes them has a plethora of the usual suspects -- The Cure, Bauhaus, Souixie, blah blah. This shit I grew out of in high school decades ago, and revisiting it has made me realize how much better other music is...
Yay, so your judgment is purely based on personal experiences. Well, just because you may have run into some 'douchebags' in the past doesn't mean that people today are like that. DCD may not be my favorite band, but they are certainly a respectable one.
Meh... poor man's Univers Zero. The sad thing is, DCD is so much more popular than UZ. DCD are pretty good, but UZ are phenominal. Not a competition, but if you like DCD, you will love UZ (and UZ were around back in 1974 and are still around and kicking today).
You might have to actually buy a CD. They are signed to Cuneiform records. But hey, some people like Chimay and some people like Bud Light. In my opinion, DCD is kind of watered down by goth/shoegaze alternative influences, and is more like Bud Light, whereas UZ are working on modern compositions played by a modern chamber orchestra, and is more like Chimay. If you prefer Bud Light, I can't tell you you're wrong. I too like some DCD and on a hot day, Bud Light is quite refreshing.
DCD? Really? The best composers and singers that ever existed? Better than Stravinsky? Better than Bartok? Methinks the comparison is to shoegaze alt music, and yeah, DCD are probably better than MBV or Cocktoe [sic] Twins.
I think it's a Medieval or Renaissance shawm, which has a wider bore, wider reed, and fuller/fatter/louder sound than a modern oboe. Does anyone know the name of the shawm player?
That could be as well. I've heard it played on a bag pipe before and the shawm sounds fairly similar to bag pipe without the drone. I really want a zurna, duduk and if I can afford a shawm!
The only problem with the bagpipe is that you can't tongue notes, giving that staccato sound that sounds so good in this piece. You should check out the Chinese suona too.
shhhhhhhhh your comments r dumb.... listen! xD

DCD are great, so is this particular piece.
"Goth", not "goth"... the discussion is pointless.
"Saltarello" is the italian name for a fast, jumpy dance, first mentionned as such around the XIII-th century..
What's "goth", anyways?
"If you're trully a Goth, where were you when we sacked Rome?" :-p
cheers
