The overtures at the beginning of operas are for the musicians to warm up as well as a signal for the audience to quiet down. Like how we turn the lighting down before a show.

When the Czechoslovak army orchestra played this piece in 1950's, the conductor would randomly choose one of the fifteen clarinetists during the performance, point at him and he had to play the solo.
