Wait, so amtgard has rules. That makes it a bit better than LARP. Then again this IS LARP. but, why do I have to make the weapons all stupid a detail less? Can't I make some COOL stuff?
No, these are Amtgard legal. The Neft swords you buy aren't. And plus... You can make a whole set of swords (I got 10 good weapons of different varieties) for $20 this way. Also you're able to custom-make them to your specifications. The ones you buy at a store are all carbon-copies that come from molds and cost way too much money...
Ok, I'm from Kingdom of the Wetlands. There are better ways to make a sword. Try Rogue tech... The best in the game... NEVER shave, torque wrap... what were you thinking? Also, create a better tip...
This message was not intended to hurt anyones feelings. If you have any questions just shoot me a message and we'll talk Amtgard.
@IzzyForsaken Agree with the tip comment, but I prefer shaving (better than what they did theirs was more like butchering [all in good humor boys]) But I torque, and enjoy that more, any method you prefer?

Mine was just barely legal! I took some bamboo and stuck it in a piece of that foam used to insulate pipes during winter. Then I torque wrapped it until I couldn't feel the core anymore, and capped off the tip and the handle. It hurts sssooo bad, and no one will spar with me while I wield it. >D
one of my friends uses a golf rod in his... i just started, so this is a bit helpful for me... i'll probably go with the PVC, the loner swards got me used to it... XD
and PVC does weigh it down quite a bit, i dont think i could handle more on my muscles since i duel weild
i dont think a pvc pipe is enough hard so i would use pvc pipe and i put a iron pipe inside it and then i put a tape and those other thing what i need
It's for Amtgard; you should check it out. Plus, the Bokken, though it is used as a training tool, is certainly heavy and hard enough to do serious damage to a person and should really be thought of as a weapon (it's been used as a weapon by gangs and the like). Amtgard has specific rules about weapons that can be used, and certainly wouldn't allow a bokken. Seriously though, you should check it out.
the main reaspon i like the boken is because of how close it is to a real sword in weight, i may be wrong but those things dont look all that heavy, right? i mean i guess there would be ways to add weight to it but i still like the boken, ill look at the amtgard stuff later. but i was taught no pain no gain. :)
a rattle stop is what makes the blade safe from rattles. Rattles are when the core bangs up against the noodle. This so called "rattling" basically makes the noodle break down easier. By stopping rattling you're making your sword last at least a year longer.
I still think (even if they are safer) that this "american" version of larp swords suck. Just watchet Rolemodel and I remembered this video. Where is the fun without the bruises from a good latex sword :D But looks like this is a cultural thing. Strangely, a country which has a love for real deadly firearms does use this kind of larp weapons. So much about the US :D (there is some irony in this posting, if you find it, keep it).
Just wanted to put out there. A dowel (24~38" round length of wood) with a copper pipe insulation over it is NOT suitable for this sort of combat. You WILL break fingers, cut skin, etc.
why wouldn't you use a metal core? i made a couple sword some years back and i was told to and i used two aluminum golf clubs. i hacked off the club and beat down the tip so it wasn't sharp. i wrapped it all up and it was great! its was very lightweight and the shape of the golf club gave it a very even distribution. I'm just wondering why you said to not use metal.
I wish I knew a way to make a realistic weighted sword, so this game could be played more realistically. They need to weigh, I think it was like 60 lbs. for an average 2h sword, and I think about 12 lbs. or so for a one handed. I am unsure on one handers though. If anyone knows how to make them realistic, please send me a private message. Later.
a 48-inch blade two-hander with an average blade width of about 2 inches would need to be of steel more than 2 inches thick to weigh 60lbs... that's thicker than it is wide.
real swords are incredibly light, agile and efficient.
a hand and a half longsword weighed on average about 3.5lbs, the truly massive 2-handers weighed 6-7 lbs, and one-hand swords about 2.5lbs.
Ask away, I'm a reenactor who uses 'em every week so will answer what I know.
A core is the stuff that the foam sits on. Bamboo, PVC, or Carbon fiber rods (like certain golf clubs) are the usual things people use. Carbon fiber is usually the best because it's light and very durable but it's kinda expensive. 3/4" PVC is #2 for me because it's uber cheap and wont rattle, but it has a tendency to bend and it's relatively heavy. Bamboo is ok, but don't expect the sword to last very long. one hard hit and it snaps.

Ya I just found out about that rule cuz our park is having a newbie tournament and I found out I cant bring sum of the kids in my trailer park. Right now I'm learning how to make arrows from 1 of our 2 master archers in our park. srry to hear about yalls saturday park I wish I knew of one to go to. does ur fiance go to park too?
lol my fiance is a contractor and we scavenge the job site for left over pvc...lol its an easy way to get it and if i want to use goof shafts all i have to do is call around arlington texas pawn shops and ask if they have any broken ones and and they give them to you if you tell them that ur going to wrap them in fun noodle and beat the shit out of ppl......lol alot of ppl do amt gard here. the emerald hills birthday is next weekend!!! i cant wait!!!!!!!!!! yay!
Amtgard has turnned into a game of speed pvc weighs too much and you'll get eaten alive and dont forget amtgard IS NOT the SCA much better less painful more fun more skill is involved with a light fast weapon than a pvc stick... but thats just what I think as an amtgarder myself
these amtgard swords are ugly as hell. why don't you use real larp latex swords with a realistic look? K, it hurts a little bit more but these toys ruin the whole roleplaying element of larp.
Because we hit each other, a lot. Those latex things have caused more injuries in a single day than I had otherwise seen in the summer season with our weapons.
No, elitism like yours ruins larps. I've seen it first hand.
After getting hit in the face (accidentally) with a latex katana and getting hit in the face (again, accidentally) with a foam boffer, I safely say I'd rather get hit with the foam boffers.
Wood is not allowed. Not only is it heavy and thus the foam padding is not sufficient for the weight to avoid injuring fighters, but wood breaks by splintering and can puncture the foam and actually stab someone. Highly unlikely? It has happened and I've seen it first had as I was on the receiving end of the stick. Bamboo being a grass does not break like wood and is allowed.
the video was helpfull but the problem is this sword design is a little unsturdy the core you used is so thin that it is easier to break after seeing your video the first time i made one and my freind and i tested it out we managed to snap the core in about 30 minutes try using pvc pipe for your core its sturdier or use fiber glass (sturdy/light=great)
Wow. All I'm seeing here is a person make a sword very quickly. He makes it too heavy by using too much tape. Mine are much lighter than that must be, and certainly sturdier. Plus, I never understood the idea behind the foamie. I've never had any problems with the golf club grip.
it only states that the hit must bounce off. the groups i run do not play speed tag with the "lighter is better" motto that amtgard has somehow formed into. dont forget, we came from the SCA. its not suppose to be so panzified if you will. but thats just my plain beliefs.
thats the stupidest fucking thing i ve ever heard. period. the point is NOT to hurt people. you're probably just mad that you arent fast enough to keep up with the rest of us. the game is changing, my friend - and thus so shall we.
Hm. something I do with all of my weaponry is to put a piece of open cell on the end. It's less painful to be stabbed by and it helps the tip last longer. If you do use open cell foam on the end, remember to put an opposite layer of tape (so it isn't sticky) on the tape to the sides of the open cell. Otherwise, when you stab someone with the tip, the opencell will compress and the tape will stick to itself, not letting the open cell expand again. It will make more sence when you try it.
Thanks man, we've needed one of these for a while, I was thinking of making one myself lol. I love how you dont stick to the simple newb sword, you actually show a sword someone would consider playing with.
My walmart has these really lame pool noodles that kind of have a shape of a flower at the point. You can't use them to make swords. I hate Wal-Mart for that. Also, they sold tainted dog food, and my dog almost died.
I usually pick mine up from a dollar store in the summer time. They used to sell em for .25 a piece and limited you to 10 at a time. I just stocked up for years to come that way. They weren't really crap either.. I havn't had problems with them yet anyways.
I find poolcenter . com is good for quality pool noodles - hole is big enough to fit PVC, or not need a huge rattle guard for kitespar core, and is available all times of the year for around $3/noodle.
hey i have he same proublem, i put larger rattle-stops on it. it worked, but it also made the sword heavyer....lol i went out to wallmart and bought 15 fun noodles and ended up returning 13 of them i wasted like 7 bucks there, it sucked because they only gave me a stupid wallmart gift cad and not cash, i had a recept and everything, so i ended up buting like 5 rolls of electircal tape instead but now im out of cash and i need new wepons!it sucks!!! ill just barrow my buds(whos wepons suck...lol)

So you have to bruise to have fun? Good logic /s
I've made funnoodle boffers capable of major bruising.
A big part of it is cost. These boffers cost at most $7 - $10 to make, latex usually go between $50 (ok quality) - $200 for good quality.

Amtgard has turnned into a game of speed pvc weighs too much and you'll get eaten alive and dont forget amtgard IS NOT the SCA much better less painful more fun more skill is involved with a light fast weapon than a pvc stick... but thats just what I think as an amtgarder myself

wtf is that for anywayz?

amtgard

these amtgard swords are ugly as hell. why don't you use real larp latex swords with a realistic look? K, it hurts a little bit more but these toys ruin the whole roleplaying element of larp.
EFKA526 4 years ago
Because we hit each other, a lot. Those latex things have caused more injuries in a single day than I had otherwise seen in the summer season with our weapons.
Lindenstar 4 years ago
No, elitism like yours ruins larps. I've seen it first hand.
After getting hit in the face (accidentally) with a latex katana and getting hit in the face (again, accidentally) with a foam boffer, I safely say I'd rather get hit with the foam boffers.

why does the core have to be hollow whats wrong with a good ol dowel rod it may not be as lite as the other stuff but it will be a lot stronger
lordhailen 4 years ago
Dowels are more likely to splinter. In Amtgard you aren't allowed to use solid wooden core for safety reasons.
Lindenstar 4 years ago
Wood is not allowed. Not only is it heavy and thus the foam padding is not sufficient for the weight to avoid injuring fighters, but wood breaks by splintering and can puncture the foam and actually stab someone. Highly unlikely? It has happened and I've seen it first had as I was on the receiving end of the stick. Bamboo being a grass does not break like wood and is allowed.
MorUruk 3 years ago
the video was helpfull but the problem is this sword design is a little unsturdy the core you used is so thin that it is easier to break after seeing your video the first time i made one and my freind and i tested it out we managed to snap the core in about 30 minutes try using pvc pipe for your core its sturdier or use fiber glass (sturdy/light=great)
krackannv 4 years ago
Wow. All I'm seeing here is a person make a sword very quickly. He makes it too heavy by using too much tape. Mine are much lighter than that must be, and certainly sturdier. Plus, I never understood the idea behind the foamie. I've never had any problems with the golf club grip.

Looks like a way to make a panzy ass light weight, quick striking, sissy speed tagging boffer to me.
LoganHankins 4 years ago
be saying that when you are in non HP based combat.
Exarian 4 years ago
my clan only plays one hit duels. we enjoy bear pits. regardless... if it cant bruise... it cant be used.
LoganHankins 4 years ago
really? where in the rulebook is that stated (not challenging you, now you have me curious)
Exarian 4 years ago
it only states that the hit must bounce off. the groups i run do not play speed tag with the "lighter is better" motto that amtgard has somehow formed into. dont forget, we came from the SCA. its not suppose to be so panzified if you will. but thats just my plain beliefs.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
me and my friends don't even do this we just hit each other with sticks till someone has to go to the emergency room, who need pansy ass foam
lordhailen 4 years ago
We didn't actually come from the SCA, Amtgard is based on Dagorhir.
Lindenstar 4 years ago
thats the stupidest fucking thing i ve ever heard. period. the point is NOT to hurt people. you're probably just mad that you arent fast enough to keep up with the rest of us. the game is changing, my friend - and thus so shall we.
ripper44872 4 years ago
Hm. something I do with all of my weaponry is to put a piece of open cell on the end.

Oh, and I forgot to say this is the best guide on making an amtgard sword on the internet. The pages dedicated to it, and the other videos are.. bad.
Thanks for explaining it very, very well.

My walmart has these really lame pool noodles that kind of have a shape of a flower at the point. You can't use them to make swords. I hate Wal-Mart for that. Also, they sold tainted dog food, and my dog almost died.
FoxtrotNinja 4 years ago
I usually pick mine up from a dollar store in the summer time. They used to sell em for .25 a piece and limited you to 10 at a time. I just stocked up for years to come that way. They weren't really crap either.. I havn't had problems with them yet anyways.
w0rrLord 4 years ago
I find poolcenter . com is good for quality pool noodles - hole is big enough to fit PVC, or not need a huge rattle guard for kitespar core, and is available all times of the year for around $3/noodle.
travelsonic 2 years ago
Center hole is too big. Gosh I hate it when that happens.
sifushadus 4 years ago
Walmart Noodle sucks as of this season. The center whole is too big, so get your noodle somewhere else.
falcontor 4 years ago
hey i have he same proublem, i put larger rattle-stops on it. it worked, but it also made the sword heavyer....lol i went out to wallmart and bought 15 fun noodles and ended up returning 13 of them i wasted like 7 bucks there, it sucked because they only gave me a stupid wallmart gift cad and not cash, i had a recept and everything, so i ended up buting like 5 rolls of electircal tape instead but now im out of cash and i need new wepons!it sucks!!! ill just barrow my buds(whos wepons suck...lol)
dpanfan 3 years ago
when i made my Amtgard sword i didnt even need a rattle stop or foamy and the blade stay on tight and its got a good rough handle so it dont slip off
