Okay, I hope this clears it up for some people: captive bred poison dart frogs are not poisonous. It is the food in the wild they eat that gives them their toxins. Also, you don't need an open wound or mouth/eye contact to be poisoned. If you touch it, you're poisoned.
@redMONSTER3 Yup. I think it's some kind of wild fire ant that they eat an they absorb the toxins. So as long as you don't feed it fire ants, you should be ok. :P
But I think you need to rinse your hands very well before handling, because they may be able to absorb toxins from your hands, as in, chlorines and soap toxins and stuff. I've handled all kinds of frogs and other amphibians before and I'm always warned to rinse and dry my hands very well before holding them.
Though you CAN hold them, I definitely wouldn't recommend it. Yes, the insects they eat in the wild give them their toxicity, they still have very delicate skin. Handling is risky, and not recommended.
i want to buy some dart frogs but im unsure what size tank to get, you tank looks really nice and a really good size, what size is that tank in inches? thanks
@reptles nope not in captivity in the wild they eat a type of fire ant that provides them there toxins even in the wild if u got there poison on your hand u wouldn't die if u stuck it in your mouth then u should care also if u r asking this because u plan to get one and handle it u can't they r simply for show
Brilliant! I am a new dendro owner (two azureus and two bicolor in separate habitats) and am still trying to figure out an effective misting regimen that also conserves space. Any suggestions?
anybody intrested in this dude would love this guys account his account name is Rephibiankid and make new videos about every week and hes trying to start a competiton 4 the best vids of there amphibians, reptiles, and insects such as trantulas
How can you tell that "they really like the mist"? I'm not doubting it except that they looked perturbed to me. I can't tell an agitated frog from a serene frog.
Which brings me to something else...you know you can pet dogs and play with them and stuff, right? Just making sure.
i know they are not poisonous in captivity but why cant you touch ithem s it because the oils on your hands will harm them or is it that they have some toxins still around
i know they are not poisonous in captivity but why cant you touch ithem s it because the oils on your hands will harm them or is it that they have some toxins around
hey im working on my own Vivarium but im having a lil trouble with misting should i have it on low for most of the day or... what i have it to right now is it gos on for a mint evey 4 hours "on high " just enough time to fill the whole tank with fog ... is that ok or is that too much
" im gunna be puting dart frogs in it" ... "yellow backs"
lol they love it!! i really want some frogs tree frogs or strawberry poison darts i think they are called but i doubt my mum (im from the uk) will let me gave any :(
I am the creator of this video and I actually have this mister posted on eBay right now. If you want to own it, go to eBay and type: 200436480145 in any of the search boxes and it will bring you to this mister. It ends on February 15th. Good luck if you choose to bid.
Ok, I'm thinking about purchasing some moss (maybe spaghum moss), but I was wondering, does it need to have soil under it to grow? or can you just use gravel underneath it?
it depends largely on the type of moss. some only grow on rotting wood and leaf litter, some only grow on thick sandy soil. some grow on rocks and live trees. just sitting the mats on patties of tighly packed dirt or wood seems to work so far for me
they are only poisonous in the wild. They eat toxic insects in the wild but when they are captive bred they dont have the toxins in them that would make them poisonous. You cant handle them though so I dont think it really matters.
