My favourite tripods are the ones that are grey, shoot orange flares, have bendable metal legs and have a large sideways triangle on the head that shoots the heat ray. This is my favourite adaptation of any Martian Fighting Machine anywhere. they can be seen at 1:34, they maybe slow, but they look really cool!

You have to understand what the white robed priest of science were preaching at that time. While travel between planets was considered theoretically possible, stellar travel was outlawed as involving time/distance too great for any to overcome, ergo, invaders must be from our system.
