he is correct. swinging downward with contact on the middle of the ball creates backspin which causes lift.

it takes mucho practice to perfect your ball striking skill. take a look at Chase Utley and you will realize why they call him the diamond cutter. precision.

Chopping down on the ball will only keep your bat in the zone but so long. This is a good example of people trying to sell video tapes but the only problem is that not everyone can do it.

you guys are all stupid, when you come down on top of a baseball you are creating backspin, which then allows the ball to carry a lot further. it also stops you from hitting pop ups, and instead of the pop ups you get hard hits on the ground. If you think you will chop it straight into the ground then you just cant hit. I have a coach that was a hitting coach for the Astros, he worked with Berkman since he had first started out. I think he knows what he is talking about.

What in the world is he talking about? There is no way he played in the CWS for any Division 1 baseball team thinking that's how you hit? I mean, I'm open to different styles but what he just described, I've never seen one MLB hitter with the barrel above the hands at contact like that, not one. Let alone the chopping down motion and extended arms at contact? Wow, and I thought I had a lot to learn still, I feel like Ted Williams after watching this video.

Keeping the bat head flat, unangled, is the best approach if you want to hit a line drive. Your chopping technique DRASTICALLY REDUCES the chances to hit a line drive and DRASTICALLY INCREASES the chances of hitting a weak ground ball or fly ball.

Swing the bat from your load to the ball without dropping your hands and keep the bat head flat through the zone.

I think in his head he is teaching backspin. Backspin is necessary for maximum power. Teach backspin, and clarify more; or your kids will not swing right.

I think in his head, he is teaching how to create backspin; but he is exaggerated in demonstration. His demonstration is about as far from a live swing as you would wan't, but he needs to explain backspin; rather than chopping.

i think you guys kinda got it al wrong. i think stayin on top of the ball is more a mentality to have not to drop your shoulder. im not trying to diss anyone but the swing in this video is alright, but its not fluid. its pretty choppy. im gonna make a response video to this. im only in high school, but i think your gonna be pretty suprised at the swing. ill try to explain everything thats tough to put into words on here.

you must understand that most hitters are not MLB quality so they must hit differently. The worse thing for a young hitter can do is have a uppercut swing. That is why you teach hitting the top of the ball. If you teach that then you will get more line drives which is what you want.

Most pitches from mounded thrower is coming down. If you're swing down on the ball, there's only one place to meet it and that can prove difficult.

Far many coaches teach young players to "hit the top of the ball" and by the time they reach the Juniors, they've become strikeout masters.

I've found that you have to swing up on the same path as the approaching ball, lenthing the time you're in line with it, therefore, increasing the hitting zone.

@dot50641 If u were smart than u would know that when you are given a 4-seam fastball which is thrown about 1/2 of the time. because the seams are like the way they are the fastball goes upward and when u swing below a ball thats going upwards it always a pop up. and when he means on top half of the ball he only means about a quarter of an inch upward from the middle not on the very top.
