That was actually a very smart move by Alex. He realized it was third down and there was a chance that the ball was caught inbounds and short of the goalline and htey wouldn't be able to spike it to stop the clock. Or it would be caught inbounds but get a first down, and not enough time to run up and spike it. What he did allowed for another play and still guaranteed them a chance at kicking the field goal. VERY smart move and just very quick thinking.
