Alan Pasqua wrote it wiith Holdsworth in the Tony William's band. It's on the first album. So while Pasqua is credited with writing the head, holdsworth can still get credit for taking the solo improvisation where he did...
I have no issue with other interpretations...but this one kinda makes the piece 'mainstream', rhythmically, texturally, and just timbrally. The drumming is pretty straight, and the lead tone is pretty run of the mill.
As long as Holdsworth is alive, interpretations of his tunes should be forbidden. ;-) Don't get me wrong, Howie, you are a great player, but Allan is a different planet...
I'm assuming of course that you have heard the full version of this song, and are not judging it on this 40 second clip. All due respect to AH, BUT(!), the full version of this song (check out the video, please) will burn a hole through the original, on cooking value alone, (and Tony Williams is my favorite drummer of ALL time). Let me know what you think.
AH is so much better... howe is rock... and he has some cool licks but that's all. The keyboardist is terrible, SH kicks ass... and the drummer sucks compared to AH's
Have you listened to the whole version of this tune played by this band? If you have, then I will tell you that opinions are like elbows, everyone has one. In my opinion, the AH version (4:12) did nothing but made me reminisce of the original Tony Williams Lifetime version, which I already spoke of.
The whole version of this song rocks because these guys play with a fire that has been upgraded from the original. Don't forget, it's called jazz/ROCK fusion, so GH decided to
Are you a listener of jazz only or a musician(and an informed one as well)? If you're only a listener, then I'll dismiss your comments about the keyboardist and the drummer, who in fact, is one of the top drummers in jazz/rock fusion, and has been for about the last 20 years. BUT, if you ARE a musician, then you understand that the keyboardist took your boy to school, by not only playing jazz riffs but by adding Latin riffs as well, and just as important, FEELING. I'm a musician and a listener.
I'm a muscician...I play three instruments. The only thing I hear in the keyboards is him playing those three chords (along with the rest of the band). The only comping I hear is a straight-up block chord on the strongest beat! LLAME... SH has a nasty solo has more speed although he doesn't whip it out all at the beginning and is ACTUALLY comping, both rhthymically and melodically... and Have u listening to AH's version? cuz it definitely has more feeling than this sucky keyboardist has...
I have to say that the drummer gets around his drumset a lot better than Alan Holdsworth's. I just didn't see the beginning of Greg's version as the drummer is really good there
I'll concede on the theoretical and compositional points about SH--I'm not a keyboardist. Thank you for conceding on DC.
However, more improvisational SH is than GH's
keyboardist, he CANNOT touch him on generating any emotional or excitement content for me. It's not what you know(all the time), it's what you do with what you have.
Obviously we have different musical backgrounds and tastes so I think Greg Howe better conveys his emotion to u and Steve Hunt better conveys his emotion to me... I think its just a matter of how we analyze/listen to our music. Not that any of our differences in proccessing stuff is wrong or anything...
I didn't say dennis was your favorite. I said he was the best. Pardon the word choice though, I meant he was the most used and probably most technical.
Did you not catch the second part when I said, "Pardon the word choice though." Damn dude, why are you so uptight? Been a while, or what?
But to answer your question, Yes, I am the judge of "Best," but only when it comes to me. You're allowed to think whatever you want to. You're the judge of "best" too.
As far as technique? Yeah, Dennis is hard to stop. Maybe Colaiuta or Jojo Mayer, but I mean, Chad is one of my favorites, but he isn't one of "the best" in any objective term. I understand what saxyman is saying. When it comes to chops, there aren't many who can do what Dennis does. His singles are unbelievable. I'd like to see a drum battle between him, Weckl, Colaiuta, and Mayer. I wish Mayer was more involved in the fusion scene outside of his cool Jungle thing he has going on.
Exactly. Thank you for understanding my point. I'm only speaking from a technical standpoint because everything else is subjective. Some of my favorite drummers have terrible technique by traditional standards (ie; Brian Blade)
Greg seems really boxed into that style, but it's still a great style, and fun and exciting to listen to. But in terms of mastery, Allen, in the 70s, was a better guitarist than Greg in the 00s. More original.
You might be right about mastery of instrument, and all due respect to Allan Holdsworth, one of the world's greatest guitarists/innovators of ALL time, but I'm with rs328. I've heard the original umpteen times, and subsequent versions by AH, but GHk's version made me want to pick up my sticks and practice. I don't know what it is, but that is the BADDEST version of that song I have ever heard. It cooks and grooves like no other. Check out the full version and let me know what you think.
I have to , have to agree. just cant compare this to holdsworth. also skully's base lines ( with hodlsworth ) are SO much more lyrical than this bass performance.
Hey Blusee.... Can you please post this whole song???? "It way kicks ASS!!!!" Can't get enough of this song! It has a little more grove & kick than the origional...no disrespect to Alan!!!! Please post more!! Peace!
We're on the same page. I just checked out the full version of Proto Cosmos, and it kicks major gluteus. All DUE respect to AH, but GH is a force to be reckoned with.
"Unbeleivably Awesome!!" The fact that he even attempted that Holdsworth tune, one of my favorites, blows me away! You tortured us by only capturing 40 seconds!!!!! Dude, do you have that whole tune on video??? If so, please post it....you cannot get enough of him shredding those augmented arpeggios on this tune!!! Please post more!!!!!! Thanks!!
Tetsuo Sakurai is a lot better than Jimmy Johnson and Chad Wackerman isn't in the same Stratosphere as Dennis Chambers. No argument between Allan and Greg Howe though.
Leave Greg alone, guys! His tone is great, and at least he's doing his own thing. Howe is my second favorite (next to Allan) guitarist, and he's great in his own way. Ever heard "Dance"? Nobody plays wacky time sigs like Howe. My only critique is that he should have improvised this one - Allan never plays it the same twice, and I know Howe is capable of it.
I don't understand the need to trash great players. Of course Howe's not on Holdsworth's level; nobody is. So what; he kicks more ass than most mortals, and it's a cool tribute to Allan. Pasqua, Holdsworth, Chad Wackerman, and Jimmy Haslip are touring with old Tony Williams Lifetime material, and newer stuff, and kicking ass! Buy the dvd of them at Yoshis, due out this month!
Holdsworth Lays waste to Greg on this stuff. Greg is good, but plays the same tapped arp liks over and over again. Please, you have no idea what your talking about. Plus, Holdworth can play real jazz too
I'm not hearing the unwanted noise you are talking about. Greg does use a brighter guitar and he's playing through a Marshall here, so his tone is alot different from Holdsworth. Howes actual recorded take sounds alot better.
Alan Pasqua wrote it while he was in the New Tony Williams Life. Allan Holdsworth was in the band too, and obviously was on the original recording. He also still performs Proto Cosmos with his trio live.
Wasn't it Tony Williams that did this, not Holdsworth? Although Holdsworth has the tech and changes, I still prefer Howe for his laid back feel and "Rock essence" throughout all his fusion stuff. Holdsworth is good, but Howe is Tasty!
It's crazy that you can take a guy playing at as high of a level as Howe obviously is, and make him sound like a complete amateur next to Holdsworth! Howe is very good, but holdsworth is from another planet.
Good god...
