Good question about the lyrics. Lee Morgan's original version was entirely instrumental. None of the Columbia reissues of Woody's version mentions the identity of the lyric writer. BTW this video omits what to me was the best part Woody's version of Sidewinder: a kaleidoscopic, cascading, almost psychedelic trumpet sequence backed up by the full ensemble. It takes place midway through the recording and is really quite striking.
@rusher33770 this must have been around the time when woodys IRS problems started he owed them a lot of money and had to stay on the road for the rest of his life doing concerts festivals and clinics he developed a heart condition from air sickness medication and clint eastwood [ originally a jazz pianist before he was an actor] sponsered a benefit concert for him
