  • though i prefer jon cleary's version, this is just... amazing. amazing.

  • My late father loved Dr John's interpretation of this classic by the prof. Many thanks for posting it.

  • actually i mistakenly posted that here not in my tweets to someone who has never been to nwalins but hey piss off who needs you?

  • there is a great club in nawlins calledTipitinas if you go down there check it out

  • @JazzzMichael No shit, dickhead.

  • @JazzzMichael Been there...loved it!!

  • Hmmm... I think that needed the bass and drums to come in after the first verse

  • James Booker + Professor Long Hair + Gold = Dr John

  • the dr. rocks it!

  • It's a shame, there isn't more of us out there! Most people think Jerry Lee Lewis is the only Bad ass Boogie man. Shit!!! They have no idea.lol.

  • no one represents N.O. ! like DR John & the Professor! If you can't get into this music, i don't know what to tell ya! don't call yourself a music lover.

  • He gives us New Orleanians a good bit of civic pride.

  • Love it when Malcolm John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr plays Professor Longhair

  • He is vintage , one of a kind. No one will ever fill his shoes. He has that cajun squall to his voice. You would have to of have lived in New Orleans and be frequent in the french quarter to understand the following: DR. JOHN IS NEW ORLEANS, JUST LIKE PETE FOUNTAIN IS NEW ORLEANS.

  • And on Bosendorfer :o)

  • He is killing that piano! He can sing too! Total package, class A talent.

  • both the Professor and the Dr. are music legends, with a similar but different approach to piano & vocals. How can anybody say this is "better" than that?? It's only a matter of taste. I love both madly!

  • @eric669

Have you heard any James Booker?

  • hi drumbo2002, I've got all James Booker's discography, have been listening to his amazing music for about 12 years!

  • Professor Longhair couldn't really play the piano???!!!

That must be one of those alternate universe Professor Longhairs.

  • Dr. John plays and sings it more emotionally than Prof. L. Dr.'s voice sounds richer.

  • does anyone know how to get the piano score for Tipitina? The real thing, not some crapy simplified version.

  • Professor Longhair has a book out - its in that. Theres also a book called New Orleans Piano Legends which has Dr Johns version off Gumbo. Both are very good versions and should get you exactly what you need

  • Dr. John has a dvd series called: Dr. John Teaches New Orleans Piano. The dvds come with the sheet music. Tipitina is found in lesson two of the dvd set.

  • if ya'll from NOLA ,this sounds like home... Ecsp. when ya hear the beginning of Big Cheif,,ya heard me...Doc you a legend i'm 33 and loved your music since i was a kid!!

  • dr. john is the fucking man .... check him out on the Last Waltz dvd .... unbelievable how good he is .

  • you cant beat fess' version but this runs it pretty close - dr john is a living legend...

  • absolutely the master thesis!

  • Dr. plays the Professor master thesis!!

    Two phd's =pure music-priceless!!!!

    Thanks for posting this song!!

  • The Doctor, is in the House..!

  • All I can say is wow...

  • Respect for the Doctor...Da man do some seeerious Juju.

  • he's the best living blues pianist/singer

  • This is as good as it gets!!

Nobody can top Dr. John's piano skills when it comes to playing New Orleans style!!

    Awsome!

  • ummm, i might beg to differ, what about professor longhair??? i love dr.john, but professor's the king.

  • The Prof became Mac's second father after his passed away.

  • @thvsherrif Except for Professor Longhair.

  • I love this fucking cat, I couldn't understand a single word he said

  • Longhair's is better, this is kind of a mess, much as I like the Doc.

  • Yeah, Fess's timing is better, but you can't beat either one for piano playing, especially since the Dr. learned so much from Fess.

  • Well life is a mess, isn't it? This version is hot.

  • love this rendition. so full. the keys are always being used, even when there could be boring gaps to fill

  • Where was this recorded at? Geaux Dr. John. The best.

  • Montreux 1986. It's on of three tracks included as extra features on his 1995 Live at Montreux DVD.

  • It just doesn't get any better. New Orleans is and always will be a gem because of music like this coming out of the big easy!!!!

  • Simply the most beautiful piece of music ever played.

  • The Doctah Radiatin the 88's!!!!

    Nuff respect!!

  • The Doc at his scintilating best! what a player, cant get enough of it!

  • classic, just classic. love it.
