Uau,uau!!!!Consegui encontrar algo,que fez parte da minha pré-adolescencia "rockeira",Michael Murphey,cantando,tocando,e me encantando,com Geronimo's Cadillac.Demais!!!!
Hoyt Axton did write this song; MMM has done definitive version, in my opinion. I didn't know that Manfred Mann covered the song . . . hard to believe they would do a decent job. I couldn't listen to Modern Talking's version - euro-electronic-pop crap.
Never heard this version before. I only know the Manfred Mann's version. Both are great but completely different. Manfred's version is great with the vocals as they are.
A gem of the fading generation and a life that will only be read about in history books or told of on the history channel. God bless MMM. History through songs. I am glad my children have had a chance to experience his concerts. One more generation and it will be gone. Where are the cowboys now?
I saw MMM in a small Bar where he performed with his band....I couldn't believe it because I was dancing with my wife and he was an arms length away. I got an autograph after the concert that I have since lost (I think it was stolen). It was a great nite as he was on the top of his game then...River of Time just came out....a great album. He is an underrated talent.
the man has a heart. that allows him to feel. along with that comes talent. the word compassion comes to mind. i first heard this in 1972.. he[mmm] also put out a cd called 'cowboy songs'.
I have seen MMM in concert and he often speaks of his Irish ancestry. I have never heard of him claiming any Native American blood. My inclination is no, he's a Mick like me. :)
Michael Murphy produced it in 1972 on the LP Geronimo's Cadillac and Hoyt Axton, who ironically is normally the songwriter with most, produced it in 1974 on Life Machine.
Either that or he has picked a very worthy cause to promote . How can we in this country ever accuse any other country of genocide after our treatment of the Native peoples who
I saw Dick Gaughan sing this live at the Stokes Bay Festival, Gosport, England this summer. When he introduced it he said that on his last US tour he saw a T-shirt depicting Geronimo and 3 other Comanches, with the legend 'HOMELAND SECURITY - Fighting Terrorism Since 1492'!
I discovered through my renewed interest and search for this song that it was actually written by Hoyt Axton (RIP) from Duncan, Oklahoma, who also wrote "The Pusher" & "Snowblind Friend" by Steppenwolf, "Never Been To Spain & "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night, "The No-No Song" by Ringo Starr, & many other lesser-known but great songs. He also did a beautiful duet with Linda Ronstadt of the song "Lion In The Winter". His mother, Mae Axton, was co-writer of Elvis'classic "Heatbreak Hotel".
selluap; better do your research. This song was penned by Michael Martin Murphy as a protest song after seeing an old photograph of Geronimo being paraded around in a Cadillac. This song was also used by the Lakota Souix in the occupation of Wounded Knee in 1974. Hoyt Axton later recorded the song.
I hadn't even thought about this song in years. Had the album in the 70's, and always loved this song in particular. I was born & raised south of the Wichita Mountains in southwest Oklahoma, where Geronimo was imprisoned (at Ft. Sill) and later paraded for the white settlers and visiting dignitaries until his death. To me it's a very sad song, and I feel guilty every time I hear it.Quanah Parker, chief of the last band of Comanches to surrender, also spent his last days near Ft. Sill. So sad....
selluap; better do some more research. There are no mountains around Lawton, OK, (Ft. Sill) and the Quachita (pronounced Washitah) mountains are in southeastern OK near Broken Bow.
greywolf4554: You're the one who needs to do some more research, and quit being a pissy little bitch! Did "selluap" mention Ouachita Mountains? No. He said "Wichita" mountains; the oldest mountain range in North America, and they are right where they've always been; to the west of Lawton, Ok. Maybe if you weren't such a bitch, you would have time to look them up.
anyone that uses phrases like little bitch must either be a wanna be or just plain full of shit. the oldest mountians in north america are the appalachian, look it up!!!
Guess my native DNA comes out in me when I hear this song...seems native Americans is the only culture that I know of that respected the land as belonging to a higher power!...And they treated it with as a scacred trust from that higher power!

I was absolutely convinced Hoyt Axton wrote this, but research shows this guy did. Hoyt's version is a lot better, IMHO.

Either that or he has picked a very worthy cause to promote . How can we in this country ever accuse any other country of genocide after our treatment of the Native peoples who
owned this land .

always liked it. Kind of a sad song, I mean the way the Native American's were treated.
What happened was inevitable , the way it happened was unconscionable. Thanks so much for posting.
