  • How can I save a video from here to my cell?

  • Respond to this video... Yeah, the old school gospel will bring one home, but I understand that back in those days technology was not like it is today. I am impressed with how they manage to bring sound and picture together. Holla.

  • THERES NOT A VOICE LIKE ARETHAS THIS WOMEN WAS TRULY BLESSED WHAT A VOICE!

  • Why are people being so evil to each other... no matter who sang it better... remember what the song is about.. singing the praises of the Almighty as long as the song comes from a sincere place

  • @danieblu You are correct. God bless you and May Heaven shine upon you.

  • We all need to be kind to each other, and not call each other names. Please it makes me so sad

  • I needed to hear this.

God has been so good to me

  • This is good, very good but it's not Mahalia.

  • Mostick or whatever your name is....Mahalia is Gospel Queen Supreme!! Mahalia helped RAISE Aretha!!!! Aretha sat at Mahalia Jackson's feet learning from her so what are you talking about idiot? Mahalia brought Soul to gospel long before Aretha could spell Soul lol Much love to Aretha though, she's one of my top 3.

  • Aretha aint even herself at this performance, ....

  • Aretha is truly able to deliver.

  • absolutely love this song!!

  • I DO NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL. Aretha may be the Queen of Soul, but THIS is NOT her song. I won't compare her to Mahalia, because like it's been said: "There's no comparison." Mahalia's version is annointed. I'm not sure WHAT this is, but is surely AIN'T annointed. These Soul Singers should stick to singing soul music, and leave the Gospel to the ones who are TRUELY walking in the ways of Jesus. No disrespect to THE QUEEN OF SOUL, but it is what it is, and "annointed," this ain't.

  • @SingerForLife3000 Hold up do you know anything about Aretha. She grew up singing church, she has the spirit of a gospel singer, i can say that she has a deeper connection that many full time gospel singers. She has never left the church.

  • @TheQueenAretha I just know when I feel the annointing, & when I don't. No disrespect 2 the Queen of Soul. I know her father was a Pastor, & she grew up in the church. However, when I listen to her, and Chaka singing Gospel, vs. Mahalia,Yolanda Adams, Shirley Ceasar, Karen Clark-Sheard, for me, there's no comparison.. No disrespect, but it is what it is. Aretha can sing the "be-Jesus" out of some Pop music, though, and that's why we love her, and she remains the Reigning Queen of Soul.

  • @SingerForLife3000 Hold up why are you comparing Chaka in with Aretha and Mahalia. Chaka is not as rooted as Aretha and Mahalia and Aretha for her to be a secular singer, she is the only one come close to Mahalia more than Yolanda, Shirley and Karen. They don't have Aretha's spirit.

  • @TheQueenAretha I mentioned Chaka because she sings Karen Clark-Sheard's "The Secret Place," & many have compared the two versions, just like we are doing here. I GET that you love Aretha... don't know if you know her personally, or not. However, I disagree, that's all. I DO NOT think Aretha's Gospel singing comes close to Mahalia more than Yolanda, Shirley & Karen. I LOVE Yolanda Adams version of this. It is ANNOINTED!!!! You & I just have different tastes, that's all.

  • @SingerForLife3000 But the truth is her gospel sing does come close to Mahalia and her roots are deeper than Yolanda, Karen and even Shirley. If you are going by one gospel performance than you don't know Aretha work in gospel. The reason i am saying that is because i have listened to her work in gospel. She is a gospel singer, like i said it before the church never left her.

  • @SingerForLife3000 I know many would debat over than but really listen to Aretha when she is singing gospel. She is at her best when she does and listen to her sing. She is telling a story with her voice.

  • @TheQueenAretha I am also curious: why is it SO IMPORTANT for you to sway people over to your way of thinking & viewing things. If somebody doesn't like something, they just don't like it. YOU trying to convince them that THEY SHOULD LIKE IT, is a complete waste of time and energy. YOU have an affinity for Aretha's gospel singing. Why isn't that enough?

  • @SingerForLife3000 Its not that i am trying to sway you into anything, if makes me made when people make these assumtions. I knew that i have that way of coming off like that and i am trying to gain control of that but the truth is the truth. I would say what i am saying if i didn't know it was true.

  • Mahalia Jackson was purely a gospel singer. Aretha may have started out singing in the church, but she rose to fame doing secular music. So of course her performance is going to be stagier and, well, more of a "performance". To compare the two is apples to oranges... pointless when we could just be enjoying the artistry of each one for what it is!

I would also love to see the "Amazing Grace" version here. That was the first version I ever heard of this song, by anyone, and I still love it best.

  • @YamiNoSensei13 I agree w/YamiNoSensei13's view here. It's a waste of time comparing one Singer's roots, vs. another, & so on. 'Retha is 'Retha, & a GREAT artist. The fact that I don't like her gospel singing as much as I like some other quote, unquote "Gospel Singers" is my personal right. AND, "I", (and others) have the right 2 express this w/out having 2 feel like some "avid Aretha Franklin gospel fan" is going 2 try & CONVINCE me that I NEED 2 like Aretha's gospel singing.

  • @SingerForLife3000 It's all subjective!!!

  • Queen Aretha does not have to be LABELED a gospel singer!! Aretha is Gospel!! Aretha has more Soul Flavor, Passion, Fire and Artistry than Mahalia ever had! Aretha walks right in that gospel arena and SINGS CIRCLES around Mahalia in this great performance in Downtown Detroit where I ATTENDED as Aretha blew Mahalia off the map singing this song on her "Amazing Grace" album, "The Greatest Gospel Album Period" !!!!!!

  • @mostick313 No one other singer can touch Mahalia in the field of Gospel. Not even Aretha. She can't blow Mahalia off the map. What is wrong with you, show some respect.

  • Whats wrong with you young lady? This is Arethas Damn video and the best pace in the world to give the Royal Queen Aretha all the High Praise to the talest order! When it comes to Miss ReeRee Franklin, Mahalia can get somewhere and sit down! Because Aretha is PASSIONATE, HAPPY, UPBEAT, FIERCE, SENSUAL, MAGICAL, CONFIDENT, MESMERIZING and wears her true heart on her sleeves MUCH BETTER than Mahalia ever did!

  • @mostick313 Will you shut the hell up with all your disrespectful comments. I hate the way you just throw Aretha around like that. Aretha wouldn't want you disrespecting the woman that came before her.

  • Dont YouTube Police the hell out of me! U can Ghetto The hell right over on Mahalias Videos and sing her praises! Please, do not reduce yourself to a Pathetic Whinney Ass VIRUS on Queen Arethas Gatdamn Video! Aretha made Mahalia OSELETE in the 60s and MOPPED THE FLOOR UP with Mahaia with her AMAZING GRACE 72'. Aretha, much smoother around the edges than mahalia AMAZED the world with SUPERIOR GENIUS!

  • @mostick313 Aretha did no such thing. Mahalia is still an major figure in music today. She didn't mop the floor with Mahalia. Will you give it a rest. Mahalia Jackson is not on this earth to take up for herself and why are you on her disrespecting a dead woman, someone that Aretha adored very much. You are just as wacking as a Patti or Chaka stan.

  • @mostick313 I am doing no such thing. You are the one that brought Mahalia in this. Aretha doesn't mop the floor with Mahalia, nor did she set the standard for gospel. Mahalia and many others did that. Amazing Grace is very a legendary album but doesn't erase the efforts of the gospel greats that came before Aretha.

  • Mahalia, in a BOX/LABEL. Aretha, The FIERCE TIGRESS DIVA, knows no Musical bounds and is BEYOND CATEGORIZATION! Mahalia lacks the Soul Artistry that Aretha posesses which allows for Aretha to HIT A MULTITUDE OF DIFFERENT NOTES! Highs, Lowes, Curvy, Wavy Mesmerizing notes thats 100% Unique! Mahalia, more like your every day church woman compared to Aretha, A Spiritual Diva full of Gods Fire! Better Recognize!!

  • @mostick313 Think what you want but you don't have to disrespect someone else to bring Aretha up. Mahalia doesn't lack soul. What the hell are you talking about. What the hell does a curvy and wavy note sound like. Mahalia is not some everyday church woman, that woman defined the genre of gospel. No one can touch Mahalia in gospel. She is the best

  • i love Aretha, but Miss Mahalia is the best on this one.

  • What happened to the version Aretha did on her "amazing grace" album? I like that verson.....I wish somebody would put it back on youtube....

  • Mahalia was Mahalia, and Aretha is Aretha. Mahalia had so much faith in what she was singing about, which is why, and I do believe her version is better, she comes across so much stronger. And to be honest, Mahalia's voice is better, it is clearer, stronger, and without the theatrics. It is just pure. But that is not the point. To be able to sing like Mahalia or Aretha is a blessing!

  • Aretha is indeed, The "Queen of Soul" and sang this version wonderfully.

Mahalia however can make the Devil himself get up and shout with the feeling, soul and life she put into her original version. Mahalia after all is the mold from which the greatest gospel singers of all time were made (Including Aretha, the Hawkins Family, Andrea Crouch and more ...).

Both are good but, Mahalia Jackson's is Great!

  • She did pretty good but you can hear pain and sincerity in Mahalia's version. Aretha is just singing a song. Just my opinion but I like unscripted praises to the Lord from the heart.

  • The Royal Queen Aretha is the GREATEST VOICE EVER! Mahalia's version is great but Miss Aretha's version has more POWER, FLAVOR,ARTISTRY,SOUL and MUCH SMOOTHER around the edges!!! Queen Aretha does it better than all the rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yes good wishes to you too.

  • I only meant to imply it makes you different to me, not different in an unusual way. I know there are plenty of discerning ears who would agree with your feelings on the matter and as I say thank God he has made us different in that respect. The fact that I prefer Mahalia has nothing to do with cronology by-the-way, it's just that I find Aretha a bit screechy for my tastes. Personally I could never say that X or Y is/was the greatest singer of 20th C cos there to many great and different singers

  • The fact that you think Aretha is the greatest singer of the 20th century just goes to show how God, in his wisdom, has made us all different. What a slow old world it would be if we all liked exactly the same things :-) Blessings to you and to the wonderful Aretha Franklin

  • both Mahalia and Aretha are GREAT and Wonderfully

    by Tunu,swiss

  • I just don't know how anyone can say one is better than the other. Mahalia and Aretha speak/sing different messages equally powerful. Mahalia was truly a rare transcendent soul; Aretha is like the rest of us . . . struggling to make ourselves whole. Regardless of what anyone believes, Aretha never forgets her roots; her foundation; her salvation. And that, alone, is what makes her so great.

  • Aretha was fortunate to have grown up around Mahalia.

  • That fried chicken must have been good! Aretha, the queen of soul, must had her full. KFC must have been talking to her. That woman can sang and eat some KFC.

  • an entirely disrespectful and shameful comment

  • Clara Ward may have done this first, but Mahalia Jackson put her stamp on it and it will be forever associated with Mahalia. This is Mahalia's version by Aretha.

  • Clara wrote it.

  • No she didn't...Rev. William Herbert Brewster wrote this.

  • The woman wrote it after she came out of a coma..everybody knows this.

  • I don't know that!!! And again this song was written by Rev. William Herbert Brewster from Memphis, TN pastor of East Trigg Baptist Church, and you know NOTHING about gospel history.

  • This is Baptist gospel at its finest.

  • Yes, I love Aretha 's talent too, always have but like birdstuckinchimney says Mahalia is transcendent. Mahalia gets caught up into the Presence, you can see it happen on elfeco's vid. It's more than being caught up in the meaning, it is manifesting the Presence through the gift.

I've been a pro muso for 52 yrs and Mahalia was/is the window of the living God. Mine eyes have seen the Glory.

  • You got that right about Mahalia! I just watched Ovation TV's tribute to her . . . what an amazing singer period, and a mover and shaker in the Civil Rights Movement. I didn't know how much she contributed. She'll always be loved by those who were touched by her soul.

  • But I still luuuuuuv Aretha. My hair stood on end watching her sing at President Obama's Inauguration! The saints were smiling down from heaven that day, oh yeah!

  • That's it SirBarko. I first heard Mahalia in 1962 on an LP singing "My God is real, for I can feel Him in my soul." I was 22, not yet a christian but it made me weep and was instrumental in me finding God 2 years later. "We gonna sing somewhere round God's Alter, we gonna shout all our troubles over." oh yes, "Doesn't matter if you're black or white...comin' up from every nation, we're on our way to the Great Coronation." Thank you Lord.

  • 1987 to be exact, during pope John Paul's visit to Detorit.

Listen to her 1972 version on the famed "Amazinfg Grace " album, for a highly individual rendition that suits her voice better, also tempo wise.

  • I gotta say somethin' else 'bout this version. When I'm listening to it I can't help feelin' that Aretha is "performing" the song like she'd perform any other song. When I hear Mahalia sing it I feel her motivation is not to "perform' the song so that everyone gives "her" praise, but to "impart" the Spirit of the song so that everyone gives "Him" praise. Mahalia, to me, sounds caught and carried away by the meaning of the song, while Aretha sounds caught up in how the audience is like'n' her

  • i agree; the first time i heard it i was a young man. i was sleeping on a sunday morning and as i woke mahalia was singing this and i swear, i felt the spirit of the Lord, and i've loved it ever scince. not even patti can touch mahalia, she is all for God.

  • shes pretty in that color......

    praise him re-re!

  • I love this every time I visit this page, Thanks again for posting.

  • Amazing!! Thanx for posting.

  • She was lettin loose here!!! She sounded great.

  • i don't think they're saying she's singing the devil's music like for real. back then all black people who heard their folks singing songs with a gospel feel to it says it was the devil's music. like in ray, there's a part that a lady says it

  • As you can see, I put a "wink" smiley beside that remark to indicate that i was being humorous. Don't be so quick to jump next time.

  • I will thank Him, Glory hallelujah! Jesus set me free! amen

  • This is an okay version, but it's not as good as Mahalia's, and Mahalia's version wasn't as good as Clara Ward's. Clara Ward *still* owns this song and Clara has been dead longer than some of y'all have been living.

  • Aretha has a higher voice than Mahalia so its different

  • Her voice wasnt higher in the 80s

  • Hmmmm...something ain't quite clicking right here...if this was recorded in the 80's, what's with that picture of Aretha from the 2000's? She didn't look anythang like that in the 80's, child!

  • NOT EVEN CLOSE listen to Pattie and Aretha and then watch Mahalia Jackson it makes a diffence when your singing from the soul and just performing.

  • She good she even great but she don't hold a candle to Mahalia.

  • sang it Retha. I don't know who was playing that piano but they was killin it. Thank ya Lord for keeping me.

  • That's Aretha playing the piano. She used to play piano for her father Rev C.L. Franklin. Her roots are in Gospel, then she crossed over and began singing the devil's music. ;)

  • That is not Aretha play (although she is very capable). That is the late Thomas Whitfield who also played and arrange music on her One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism album.

  • Areatha still has it!!!

  • Sing Aretha Sing for the Good Lord!

  • Amen to all of you and your comments. What a way to end the day. Nikki Giovanni recorded a poem of hers over this this hymn.Love benefits like a ripple on a pond. It's something else.

  • That boy is playing true old school piano! True Baptist struttin playin!

  • well, i think her weight doesnt allow her to wail like she used to,, singin is about breathin,, and with all that chest around her lungs,,it can inhibit breathin .

  • lol...You ought to stop!

  • she wasnt fat in the 80's so stop hating.....did it stop Lucianos fat ass from singing, so mind your business.

  • Umph, tikkunsoulam, that based on that one statement I might have to ask you to marry me.

  • Smoking or not she still hollered on this song!I like the rought texture of her voice during this period.

  • this is what they need to do today.

  • yeah thats tuff the pIANO WAS ROCKIG THATS WHAT I LIKE IT OLD SCHOOL

  • Why ya'll put that picture of her looking like a BIG power blue BIRD up there!!!

  • I think this was her tribute to Mahalia Jackson because this is more Mahalia's rhythm and around the time she was supposed to do that show that was a tribute to Mahalia's life.

  • This is the kind of piano playing i like....there are still people at smaller churches here in alabama that play like that.... You can tell Aretha had the smoking going on during this time....

  • That Aretha flaked on the Mahalia show was my greatest dissappointment of all of Aretha's strange career moves. this does sound like MJ's arrangement. Have you heard Esther Marrow's MJ tribute cd?

  • Wish someone would upload Aretha's "Mary Don't You Weep" from AMAZING GRACE. So brilliant I say once where someone greated a ballet around it!!!

  • This is Baptist gospel at its finest.

  • I'm looking for Aretha singing her gospel classic surely He's able that Zie'l remade. I really need that.

  • She is really singing this! Now this is true traditional gospel...I love it!

  • this one is very old school, down south church. but we just can't forget the one on the amazing grace album.

  • Thankyou for the upload. I like this version even more than the 1972 one, although both are awesome.
