  • Thank you :)

  • My water heater does exactly what happens at the end of this video... the pilot lights up, then I turn the temperature up and the "stove" catches fire.. but the problem is that it ALL goes out after about 20 min.. I keep having to re-light the pilot and turn the temperature up.. whats the problem here?

  • @stopwhining1 You have to change the thermocouple -- the metal part he's talking about. It's shutting itself down for safety. I'm here because I have the same exact problem you're talking about. You can also Google "Replace Thermocouple - (Brand name of your heater)" to find the manual. City Wide Water Heaters here in Winnipeg left a "manual" when they installed tank, but it tells you nothing at all -- so that if you have a problem you have to call them -- ought to be a law against that.

  • @WpgLwr007 Are you sure? Because I just spoke to the manufacturer of my Water Heater and they told me that the spark arrestor needs cleaned and theyre sending me a cleaning kit... I dont know exactly what it is I just hope I can fix it fast

  • your the man !!

  • i change my thermocouple ,works for 6 months.but i have that same problem again,

  • i sure hope this helps! really entertaining too:) thanks!

  • does this work the same with gas fire places

  • Saved my family alot of money! Thanks so much!

  • My girlfriend agreed to get In n Out tonight only if we could get the heat working. Apartment is warm thanks to you.

  • Dude Really. I have been taking cold showers for about 2 months. Thanks So Much MAN!!!

  • My pilot still goes out!!! It stays lit a couple hours, then out!! I replaced the Damn thermocouple as well!!.....Supposedly, the gas valve was replaced about 7 years ago.....Maybe the burner has to much crud on it????

  • YOU ROCK! Thank you so much for this video. I am a single mom and was not looking forward tospending a few hundred bucks on a new water heater. I have some mechanicl abilities but your videowas so spot in anyone could do it. Thanks again. :-)

  • put it on the right position and slight it right in.

    lol

  • is the problem always the thermocouple, or could it also be the vents?

  • Thanks very much! Hopefully this vid saves me $200. No more cold showers too.

  • I say f--- Facebook...YouTube® rules!! Keep sharing knowledge!!

  • Thanks brother. You probably just saved me a ton.

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!! I watched this and then I lit the pilot light!! My family's response is usually "oh, she's just a girl!" BUT I did it!!!

  • I called the toll-free # of the gas water heater manufacturer, found it was still under warranty, and got the gas valve replaced free of charge--repairman showed up next day--all done--and he replaced the thermal coupler as a bonus just because he didn't feel like coming out again if it was the thermal coupler instead of the gas valve, LOL. So my advice is definitely call and check whether unit is under warranty. Why do it yourself if the manufacturer is willing to man up to their defects.

  • Ok, this didn't work for me, for two reasons. One, my gas heater has a cover that complicates getting at the thermal coupler--it involves more than just unscrewing the cover, but also involves disconnecting a pipe and a couple of other things. Two, I called the manufacturer, and a technician told me if the pilot stays on after the red button is released, thermal coupler is OK, but gas valve needs replacement. So they are sending repairmen to do just that, free of charge, on warranty repair.

  • $9.72 at Home Depot. Thanks for the info, I'll see if this works or not.

  • ty ty ty

  • ty ty ty

  • Who would have thought a pilot light repair video would be entertaining. Thanks a lot.

  • Your audience sounds very young...should you be teaching children how to work on gas appliances? But really, thanks for the video information. My furnace guy charged me $95 to replace the thermal coupling, I will try to do it my self the next time.

  • Dude thanks a lot, this vid is so useful I change mine for my boiler and my neighbor told me to call the guy he used he paid $185 and it costed me $20 for 2 couples

  • The thermocouple generates Mili-volts, just enough power to over come the resistance of a spring that holds a valve open in the gas valve. You can try to clean it with a high grit sand paper, and take a reading, if not a strong reading you do need a new one :)

  • what the heck man, why didnt you show us when you were lighting the actual pilot. That's why I watched this video.

  • badd ass video save my day (Y) good give us more videos dude

  • Thanks a lot man, just fixed it. I was gonna be charged 200 per hour just to do this stupid thing. awsome .

  • Before you spend money on a new couple. I've found that the majority of time the couple just needs to be disconected and reconected to get the pressure inside the couple back to the atmospheric pressure. (make sure the couple is at room temp when you do this) Some times when the coupler is hot it leaks out just a hint of air out over time but can't ever get air back in like a racheting effect. So when it's cold there is a vaccume in the couple, then when hot not enough psi to function the valve

  • You just saved me over a hundred bucks. Also, the disclaimer at the end is hilarious!

  • I have the same problem you have, my pilot won't stay on. After I replace the thermocouple the pilot still wont stay on. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.... thanks

  • have to say thanx brother ,your video helped me out so much.My plumber wanted 30 dollars for the thermo coupler and 100 for his time ,so i found your video went to home depot paid 10 bucks for the part and spent 30 minutes fixing it and now i gots me some hot ass water so again hella thanx

  • I lived this video and loved the sound effect s adds lots to it

    thanks

  • Thank you! I love using Youtube to fix things. It's so great that every problem that happens in my 99 year old house has videos explaining how to fix it on Youtube. Keep up the good work! Next problem-rerouting sprinkler heads to make a garden watering setup.

  • lol

weird sound effects. I was checking all my other tabs to see where the sound effects were coming from. xD

very informative video though. In the midst of replacing a thermocouple myself. Thanks for the walk-through

  • Thanks for the basic breakdown... it is much better than reading and guessing from an instruction manual...

I hope that you paid the kids well for all of the cheers and jeers

  • Great vid. Love the sound effects. Intermission sound was the best. Thanks.

  • Thanks, it did help me, i was so lost!!!!

  • Awesome how to, saved me a ton of money and aggrevation , thanks

  • "If theres no flame, it will tell the box: Hey shut the gas off before you blow up the house"

    YAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

lol that part made me laugh so hard

  • Educational and entertaining, thank you so much for showing it.

  • Extremely helpful. I just now lit my water heater for the first time. TOO EASY!

  • @phanjazm Yeah its not rocket science.

  • Thank you, sir. I usually spend hours searching for these answers as well - glad I was directed to your video...and I rather enjoyed the kids.

  • That was a VERY cool and informative video. The disclaimer at the end sealed the deal. You may want to add 'Batteries Not Included' and 'No Animals Were Harmed In The Making Of This Presentation'.

  • u can put a mulitimeter on it and check the dc milivolts should b around 20-30mvs that will tell u if its good or not and it holds a magnet in that box witch is called a unitrol gas valve

  • would have been alot better without the stupid kids cheering and jeering

  • Fair enough technical information, fun to watch, and learn. You are good... Thanks

  • Good JOB. Thanks for showing it.

  • lol

  • Hey,Thanx for taking the time to make this,it helped me alot.sound affects were a plus.....You rock...Brently in Oklahoma,USA.

  • awsome, thanks. very helpful, great detail. had to replace the hose out to house for hot water. after that could not get pilot light to come back on, after watching vid had back on in two seconds(literally). thanks!

  • Thanks Austin! I really appreciate the nice comment!

  • I just fixed my furnace, with exactly the same problem --- thermocoupler not getting hot enough to activate burner. The first thing is to CLEAN thermocoupler sensor with emery cloth (SHINE IT; remove burnt on crud); next thing is to CLEAN the pilot orifice with a wire brush, also removing crud. The pilot light now burns CLEANER and HOTTER; and the thermocoupler responds efficiently and works perfectly. Try cleaning old thermocoupler and pilot before you buy new one. Save a few bucks.

  • Some of those thermocouples are reverse thread, which obvioulsy quickly got discontinued. Err somewhat. There's still quite a few out there.

  • Your tutorial was clear, concise and very complete. The way you zoomed in on each of the different components was super helpful for me. My water heater is back up and running! 10 minutes and 10 bucks. Thanks for a wonderful job on this.

  • Me too -- thank you. I was able to fix mine for the cost of the part. One thing I'd add to your tutorial though, is to measure the length of your old thermocouple after you remove it, as they come in all sizes at the hardware store.

  • thank you! i was able to fix my water heater in 10 minutes without having to call someone and spending $100 to do something that cost me $8.10.

  • i just replaced my thermo coupling 1month ago and its back out thats y they're only 7bucks a pop cheap aftermarkrt BS

  • Bro! This was awesome and hilarious!

    Love the background audience LMAO!

    Changing mine today.

  • this is GREAT...thank you, thank you, thank you....this was so much more informative than any other video...this was very helpful...thank you

  • You are a life saver ! The other videos did not show "where" to light the pilot. Your demo by setting the rods on the outside REALLY helped.

  • I looked at several videos on "how to relight my water heater" while the others were helpful, your was by far the most helpful ( I could have done without the sound affects. smile)..thank you thank you thank you

  • nice work.

  • THank you!!!!!!!!!! great vid you saved me from being raped by a contractor! (and you helped me to fix my water heater!!!)

  • THX for the help!

  • great - thank you!

  • Cars are dangerous too. Hundreds die each year in auto accidents. Using your logic, we should ban all the cars. Or how about prisons? Since people die in them, lets close them all down.

    Very dangerous

  • you should make sence if you are going to reply to a comment dumbass

  • you must be a plumber

  • You didn't understand the comment- that makes you the dumbshit

  • i understand that you don't give a fuck about people.

what makes you think that it's ok for just one person getting hurt or killed, just because it's a lesser evil than some other dangers? you are bound to get hurt in a prison, that environemnt warrants it...people get hurt in car accidents, because that's what happens. but people don't get hurt by hot water heaters you asshole...fuckin idiot

  • im so grateful for you and youtube. you just saved me 60 bucks. awesome

  • excellent video.....Bro.... you saved the day

    Greetings from San Diego Ca

  • nice work. Save the bucks. good job.

  • Heyyyyy !!!! you were right... I followed your instructions and you were right.. I fixed mine...

    Thankssssssss :)

  • Thanks so much for this super info. You are great, the net is great!!! I have been meaning to call my prop. manager about my water heater, but am never really home during the day. I think about it when I get home and am stuck with a cold shower or a exercise creating bath (water toting is hard work).

Again, thanks so much. And for what it's worth, I thought the sound effects were cute.

  • For informative thanks Oh and I thought the sounds effect were kinda funny haha

  • Would have been better without the ridiculous sound effects.

  • Nice video, and nice whistle at 3:25HAHAHA Thanks for a great vid!

  • Hey Ballssack, how did it all go? Get your hot water working?

  • saved my bacon this morning you rock!!!

  • quick follow up from out the door to lowes to a working hot water heater in one hour and most of that was me trying to cram my fat hands into that tiny little space to remove the pilot light and thermocouple.

  • Welcome!.And see you live near us so YOU fix it next time! I forgot I called SDG&E to relight our pilot. They showed up later to light it. Said great job! THEN said, next time, let us do it free.Turns out they will replace the thermocouple AND/OR Control box free. Parts AND labor. I guess I only get to feel GREAT for being a genius for a couple hours......

  • Well, guess I won't be a star. Damned house failed to blow up! Takes about 5 minutes in AND out and now we can't pay a plumber over $100.00.....So depressing. Now, if only you had been here to help my wife when she adjusted the valves on her Vespa! Quit slacking of here now.......

  • hahah! awesome Mike! Im really glad this video helped you and your wife fix your water heater problem.

Click the "watch in high quality" link if the text in the video is hard to read.

I also have some other "tutorial" videos in my profile.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment. I really really appreciate it! :)

  • Wife is on the way to Lowes for new part! I will record the lighting in case we blow the house up too......This info is the kind of thing that make YouTube such a success. Great stuff.
