I'm familar with the famous picture "Napoleon on the Bridge at Arcole" but I never realised what courage and leadership he showed - on that bridge - until I saw this clip. Not that the actor does justice to the role; Napoleon was (in reality) much less 'glib'. A true leader and his soldiers loved him; after each battle he always visited the wounded, the 'line troops' as well as the officers. Napoleon also forbad war crimes; he was particularly rigourous in punishing crimes against women.

He was one of the greatest generals cause he managed to win battles for almost 20 years.

All European armies suffered from incorrect medical knowledge and inadequate precautionary measures by 21st century standards. At the time, the French medical corps was considered one of the most advanced in the world, with pharmacists, doctors and surgeons. Their lack of disinfectants and bloody amputations may seem barbaric by our standards but they saved many lives despite being overworked and underappreciated.

I think I'm a better strategist and tactician than Napoleon. I would've had the front tier of soldiers pushing a ten foot wide, five foot high, heavy metal shield that could be rolled forward. Napoleon's troops wouldn't have taken so many hits as they did. The giant rolling shield would have eyeholes in them so the troops could fire as they rolled forward.
Uhh, his army was flat broke at the time, and his soldier hadn't been payed in a very long time. Considering what he had to work with, he did a fair job.

I always thought the Bearskin Grenadiers seen above in the French army was some kind of unique uniform in that style reserved for napoleon's Oldest and most experienced veterans.
Yes, but what was special for the experienced soldiers of Napoleon also called the old guard a part of the Imperial guard was that they had a golden chain over their bearskin hat and a red feather
This series isn't particularly accurate when it comes to coalition uniforms; I've got no idea why Austrian Gunners are wearing the Raupenheim. Good eye though.
The english like to think that they never committed a crime against humanity in their "empire" they established for pure profitable reasons. Tell Gandhi that! Tell the Boers that! Tell the Aborgigines that! Tell the Maori that! Tell the Native Americans that! By serious historians it is widely known that the english committd more crimes against humanity in their quest for an empire of profit than any other contemporary regimes. Period. Napoleon was a saint compared to the British conquistadors.
@daveray4@daveray4 those well known british conquistadors? funny as "conquistadors is a purly spanish term :S and to say that britain commited more crims to humanity in its empire is hugly nieve. british foreing policy may have been agressive but there was hardly rape or looting, much like the french in the iberian peninsular who basicaly raped and murderd 10000s of civilians in spain and portugal. napoleon may have been a "saint" but french soilders wenrt they were basterds
@markymalarky1990, actually the British too commited atrocities in Spain. Such as the sacking of Badajoz, and San Sebastion, where half-insane British troops pillaged and killed off much of the population.
@daveray4 'The English' acknowledge that their Empire committed atrocities. So, what are you talking about? Every major power has committed atrocities, any serious historian could tell you that. And if 'the English' were so bad to their colonies, why do they continue to co-operate under the Commonwealth? Of course the British committed bad things. But, it just sounds like you have a stick up your ass concerning the English, singling their empire out on a vid not involving them.
Napoleon banned inter-racial marriages and ordered that all white women who'd had any sort of relationship with a black or mulatto (person of mixed race) be shipped to France He further commanded the killing of as many blacks in Haiti as possible, to be replaced by new, more docile slaves from Africa.
If the slaves were fractious, they were roasted over slow fires, or filled with gunpowder and blown to pieces.
When the slaves began to fight for their freedom, under the leadership of a charismatic African military genius called Toussaint L'Ouverture, Napoleon sent 10,000 crack troops to crush Toussaint and restore slavery. In 1802, a vast programme of ethnic cleansing was put in place. .
To ban interacial marrieges is to the geniouses credit, and iam glad that he did something like that, also to be an antisemite means that he was a genius ahead of his time! And that he persecuted them is a feat of admiration by noble european spirit.
He accuses him of being a racist and an anti-Semite who persecuted Jews and reintroduced widespread slavery just a few years after it had been abolished by the French government.
The most startling of these findings, the attempted massacre of an entire population over the age of 12 by methods which included gassing them in the holds of ships, relate to the French Caribbean colony of Haiti at the turn of the 19th century.
Napoleontas-your inchorent. Nobody with brain can understand your jibberish. But I think you are saying that you are a racist and anti-semite? Yes it would appear so. That explains your homosexual infatuation with Napolean. Tell me - you would like to bugger Napolean if possble right? that would be your dream right? of course. How pathetic your whole live evolves around shitty Napolean. Why would fans of Shitler and Napolean honor Ribbe? It would be the opposite idiot. You are a damn fool.
so the first day they were repulsed obviously. I assume they attacked again the next day and took the bridge? but where is that part? have you posted it? thanks for alll the other good stuff you posted
No kidding. OF course I know he was only General at that time but my questions still remains. Did he REALLY make the charge? Napolean was notorius for making up lies about what he did. He was propogandist. If he was in front line - he would have been killed. Someone said he was thrown over the bridge to be saved so maybe he wasn't soo much the hero as portrayed? What about when he fired cannons into his OWN troops and the end of the battle of Waterloo so as to save himself?
Napoleon was indeed a hero, and at arcole He was the one who set the example, and when did you saw that??? Napoleon at the end of the battle of waterloo charged at the head of the guard, and only after his officers were almost revomed him from the field by force he stoped
ok then - "maybe" so but it's known fact that Napolean always exagerated his deeds and had lots of propganda. You can't deny that. There is a video here - battlefield detectives or some such video - they stated at the end of battle of Waterloo - Napolean fired into his won retreating troops with his cannon. If Napolean was in front line - he would have been killed. those in front line always got killed. Let me guess-his officers removed him before he ever got close to the enemy right?
Napoleontas-you have yet to answer my question - what do you think of Napolean in regard to the time he executed something like 5000 prisoners of war all at the same time? Butcher right? Can you imagine the enormity of the horror? wasnt' that a heinous crime against humanity? makes him like Hitler or Stalin doesn't it?
If you are reffering to the incident in Asia, he couldnt do otherwise he was isolated his fleet was destroyed and he couldnt afford to feed them , he did it so that his 30.000 soldiers may survive. And for the other the Documentary take my advise listen to documentaries but dont try to learn history from them, Napoleons troops died for him and most of them willingly i will refer to and incident , when a soldier of Napoleon was asked about his emperor he said:
We ALL LOVED NAPOLEON and we were willing to DIE FOR HIM, but i remember the first time i saw him and spoked to me, after that i regretted for only one thing, that i DINT HAVE A SECOND LIFE TO DEDICATE TO HIM! That how his troops loved him
For three days he kept the 4,000 mostly Turkish prisoners with their arms tied behind their back; then the massacre began.
Somewhere between 2,500 and 4,000 men were slaughtered there and then, either by shooting them or by running them through with bayonets. Shortly afterwards plague broke out, decimating the troops on both sides.
Hahahaha you are seriously brain damaged and you are provoking me with the same arguments, i said that he couldnt do anything else about the prisoners, and if you cannot understand it, when you will command an army and you find yourself in simular situation try to feed the turks with honey IDIOT
it was his obligation to arrange food. So you're telling me it's easier to massacre 5000 men than to find food? Address my point that Napolean was responsible as he chose to invade Eqypt. He didn't need to invade Eqypt. Address my all my other points here. I think I have proven the man was a tyrant, war criminal, and only thought of himself. Thought of his soldiers when it was convenient but as soon as it wasn't - he abandoned them and attempted to have them poisened.
And Napoleon gave them the choice to die or live, by putting the poisons beside their tables to drink them if they are in mortal peril of being captured by the Enemy
But where do you see italians here ? It is the French army led by General Bonaparte charging the Austrian forces settled in northern Italy. Second, make a difference please between the soldiers from the Northern part of Italy (very good soldiers very appreciated in the French army) and the southern part (very bad soldiers but very good gangsters). It is as if you compared a swedish with a spanish.
Je répondais au posteur de la vidéo qui dans son introduction écrit "he gained the command of the italian army". Confusion entre l'armée d'Italie française et l'"armée italienne" (qui n'existait pas à cette époque).
Go and see the incident οf napoleons 100 days and what the soldiers that were send to kill him did when they confronted him and you will understand how much they hated him... idiotic parasite
do you think these soldiers loved Napolean too? Napoleon led his general staff on a tour of the plague-infested hospitals. It did not deter him from suggesting to the doctors that seriously ill French troops who could not be evacuated should be given a fatal dose of the opiate laudanum. The doctors forced him to back down
Napoleon in the plague infested hospital sowed to the troops with his example that he didnt care of dying, it is know that he was carrying with his bare hands infested soldiers so that he could give an example to the soldiers around and by all of his generals is described as fearless ,Napoleon himself said that the poison doses were put beside the so that they could drink them OPTIONALLY OK? And this is the greatest example that demonstrates his incapability without A FLEET supporting them
did these soldiers love him too? Marching to Cairo, Napoleon left 2,200 of his troops dead, and 2,300 more seriously ill or wounded. Most of them he left behind, knowing that the Turks would cut off their heads as soon as his army left. They did their best to follow his retreat, crying out not to be abandoned. They straggled along, their throats parched in the debilitating heat, which reduced their cries to a croak. Injured officers were thrown from their litters and left to die in the dunes.
hahahaha have you got anything else to say except Napoleon-egypt-abandoned-injured soldiers, etc etc? I suggest that you stay there and die together with your healthy troops and yourself, are you serious?
how sick is it that you think I'm brain damaged because I detest the deaths of 5000 men yet YOU condone it. Wouldn't that make YOU the brain damaged one? Yes absolutely - as 100 people who is brain dead.
You are incapable of understandin fundamental rules in warfare, if you dont kill you are dead 100% if the generals thought like you their army and themselfs would be dead within a few days, and talking about the turks you must learn what the Turks have done to humanity and then make ridiculous comments
Soldiers were abandoned in the cornfields, which were still smouldering in the devastation of crops and villages ordered by Napoleon. In all, some 5,000 Frenchmen lost their lives
napoleontas-is this the guy u admire? Do u admire Hitler 2? In his book, Le Crime de Napoléon, French historian Claude Ribbe has claimed that in the early 19th century, Napoleon used poison gas 2 put down slave rebellions in Haiti & Guadeloupe. Based on accounts left by French officers, enclosed spaces including the holds of ships were used as makeshift gas chambers where sulfur dioxide gas (probably generated by burning sulfur) was used to execute up to 100,000 rebellious slaves
Napoleon himself was never in Haiti or Guadeloupe and please tell me this is a modern historian? Napoleon too was gassing people know? hahhhahahahahhahaa what stupidity rules the world, maybe in those "enclosed" wooden ships was used syclone b hahhaha!! You are funny in your stupidity indeed
Napoleon was not the head of the government when he left egypt exceptionally "smart" person ,it was not in his responsibilities to decide about troop movements and deployments. But anyway it is futile and obvious that you have to prove that Napoleon was a criminal . But You are too small and insignificant
Napolean orderd French troops to kill all blacks over the age of 12 in Haiti. However, younger children were also killed - stabbed to death, put in sandbags and dropped into the sea. The Haitians fought to the death for independence, which they finally declared in 1804.Prisoners on both sides were regularly tortured and killed, and their heads were mounted on the walls of stockades or on spikes beside the roads.Non-combatants, too, were raped and slaughtered.
"He couldn't do otherwise"? like that makes it ok? HE COULD HAVE DONE OTHERWISE - he didn't have to invade Eqypt. that's what he could have done NOT INVADE. let me see if I have your ass backwards reasoning right. Napolean INVADES and then executes 5000 men and you say he had no choice? RUBBISH he CHOOSE to invade. You are an enabler and condoner of tyrant.
He shouldnt invade egypt sure he should have left the English that were trying to destroy him ,untouched, you are born to die in unbearable decadence, and as Napoleon said, glory fades but obscurity is permanent.
The French did manage to cross the bridge on the first day of the battle, they had to retire again. Another two days of heavy fighting ensued before Bonaparte and his commanders managed to solve the conundrum of how to dislodge the Austrian defenders and cross the Alpone to Arcole, which they finally achieved in gathering darkness on 17 November.

Bearskin Caps were common for the grenadiers at that era, you will see British wearing bearskins too.
Napoleontas 2 years ago
Yes, but what was special for the experienced soldiers of Napoleon also called the old guard a part of the Imperial guard was that they had a golden chain over their bearskin hat and a red feather
mathias1211 2 years ago
Interesting that the artillerists (3:46) beside the Austrian grenadiers at the bridge are in Bavarian uniform.
justplainerica 2 years ago
This series isn't particularly accurate when it comes to coalition uniforms; I've got no idea why Austrian Gunners are wearing the Raupenheim. Good eye though.

The english like to think that they never committed a crime against humanity in their "empire" they established for pure profitable reasons. Tell Gandhi that! Tell the Boers that! Tell the Aborgigines that! Tell the Maori that! Tell the Native Americans that! By serious historians it is widely known that the english committd more crimes against humanity in their quest for an empire of profit than any other contemporary regimes. Period. Napoleon was a saint compared to the British conquistadors.
daveray4 3 years ago 29
And the kenyans they committed genocide there against the mau mau and then denied it.
trueway82 3 years ago
@daveray4 @daveray4 those well known british conquistadors? funny as "conquistadors is a purly spanish term :S and to say that britain commited more crims to humanity in its empire is hugly nieve. british foreing policy may have been agressive but there was hardly rape or looting, much like the french in the iberian peninsular who basicaly raped and murderd 10000s of civilians in spain and portugal. napoleon may have been a "saint" but french soilders wenrt they were basterds
markymalarky1990 1 year ago
@markymalarky1990, actually the British too commited atrocities in Spain. Such as the sacking of Badajoz, and San Sebastion, where half-insane British troops pillaged and killed off much of the population.
expertstrategy 1 year ago

Onionsayswhat 3 years ago
If the slaves were fractious, they were roasted over slow fires, or filled with gunpowder and blown to pieces.
When the slaves began to fight for their freedom, under the leadership of a charismatic African military genius called Toussaint L'Ouverture, Napoleon sent 10,000 crack troops to crush Toussaint and restore slavery. In 1802, a vast programme of ethnic cleansing was put in place. .
Onionsayswhat 3 years ago
To ban interacial marrieges is to the geniouses credit, and iam glad that he did something like that, also to be an antisemite means that he was a genius ahead of his time! And that he persecuted them is a feat of admiration by noble european spirit.
Napoleontas 3 years ago
He accuses him of being a racist and an anti-Semite who persecuted Jews and reintroduced widespread slavery just a few years after it had been abolished by the French government.
The most startling of these findings, the attempted massacre of an entire population over the age of 12 by methods which included gassing them in the holds of ships, relate to the French Caribbean colony of Haiti at the turn of the 19th century.
Onionsayswhat 3 years ago
Racist and antisemite you said THATS GREAT NEWS, all those who admire fuhrer and Napoleon should honor this Claude Ribbe!hahahaha
Napoleontas 3 years ago
Napoleontas-your inchorent. Nobody with brain can understand your jibberish. But I think you are saying that you are a racist and anti-semite? Yes it would appear so. That explains your homosexual infatuation with Napolean. Tell me - you would like to bugger Napolean if possble right? that would be your dream right? of course. How pathetic your whole live evolves around shitty Napolean. Why would fans of Shitler and Napolean honor Ribbe? It would be the opposite idiot. You are a damn fool.

Napoleontas 3 years ago
Brilliant casting NOT. Napolean was probably only in his early 20's and they have some buy like 55 or so playing him THAT SUCKS!!
seldomseennow 3 years ago
was Napolean really in the front of the charge carrying he flag? I doubt this is true. Does anyone know?
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Yes this is tottaly true, and he was thrown into the river by one of his officers so that he could be saved .
Napoleontas 3 years ago
so the first day they were repulsed obviously. I assume they attacked again the next day and took the bridge? but where is that part? have you posted it? thanks for alll the other good stuff you posted
seldomseennow 3 years ago
yes is true. At Arcole is not Emperor. He is General. (Sorry for the English i'm italian...)
dhjgjkd 3 years ago
What about when he fired cannons into his OWN troops and the end of the battle of Waterloo so as to save himself?
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Napoleon was indeed a hero, and at arcole He was the one who set the example, and when did you saw that??? Napoleon at the end of the battle of waterloo charged at the head of the guard, and only after his officers were almost revomed him from the field by force he stoped
Napoleontas 3 years ago
ok then - "maybe" so but it's known fact that Napolean always exagerated his deeds and had lots of propganda. You can't deny that. There is a video here - battlefield detectives or some such video - they stated at the end of battle of Waterloo - Napolean fired into his won retreating troops with his cannon. If Napolean was in front line - he would have been killed. those in front line always got killed. Let me guess-his officers removed him before he ever got close to the enemy right?
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Napoleontas-you have yet to answer my question - what do you think of Napolean in regard to the time he executed something like 5000 prisoners of war all at the same time? Butcher right? Can you imagine the enormity of the horror? wasnt' that a heinous crime against humanity? makes him like Hitler or Stalin doesn't it?
seldomseennow 3 years ago
If you are reffering to the incident in Asia, he couldnt do otherwise he was isolated his fleet was destroyed and he couldnt afford to feed them , he did it so that his 30.000 soldiers may survive. And for the other the Documentary take my advise listen to documentaries but dont try to learn history from them, Napoleons troops died for him and most of them willingly i will refer to and incident , when a soldier of Napoleon was asked about his emperor he said:
Napoleontas 3 years ago
We ALL LOVED NAPOLEON and we were willing to DIE FOR HIM, but i remember the first time i saw him and spoked to me, after that i regretted for only one thing, that i DINT HAVE A SECOND LIFE TO DEDICATE TO HIM! That how his troops loved him
Napoleontas 3 years ago
For three days he kept the 4,000 mostly Turkish prisoners with their arms tied behind their back; then the massacre began.
Somewhere between 2,500 and 4,000 men were slaughtered there and then, either by shooting them or by running them through with bayonets. Shortly afterwards plague broke out, decimating the troops on both sides.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Hahahaha you are seriously brain damaged and you are provoking me with the same arguments, i said that he couldnt do anything else about the prisoners, and if you cannot understand it, when you will command an army and you find yourself in simular situation try to feed the turks with honey IDIOT
Napoleontas 3 years ago
it was his obligation to arrange food. Thought of his soldiers when it was convenient but as soon as it wasn't - he abandoned them and attempted to have them poisened.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
And Napoleon gave them the choice to die or live, by putting the poisons beside their tables to drink them if they are in mortal peril of being captured by the Enemy
Napoleontas 2 years ago
Your introduction to this video is wrong : it's not the Italian army, it's the French army of Italy. It's not the same thing ;)
MaxRWF 2 years ago
But where do you see italians here ? It is the French army led by General Bonaparte charging the Austrian forces settled in northern Italy. Second, make a difference please between the soldiers from the Northern part of Italy (very good soldiers very appreciated in the French army) and the southern part (very bad soldiers but very good gangsters). It is as if you compared a swedish with a spanish.
tortue2008 2 years ago
Je répondais au posteur de la vidéo qui dans son introduction écrit "he gained the command of the italian army". Confusion entre l'armée d'Italie française et l'"armée italienne" (qui n'existait pas à cette époque).
MaxRWF 2 years ago
Ok je comprends mieux. Tu as raison de le souligner.
tortue2008 2 years ago
Go and see the incident οf napoleons 100 days and what the soldiers that were send to kill him did when they confronted him and you will understand how much they hated him... idiotic parasite
Napoleontas 3 years ago
do you think these soldiers loved Napolean too? Napoleon led his general staff on a tour of the plague-infested hospitals. It did not deter him from suggesting to the doctors that seriously ill French troops who could not be evacuated should be given a fatal dose of the opiate laudanum. The doctors forced him to back down
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Napoleon in the plague infested hospital sowed to the troops with his example that he didnt care of dying, it is know that he was carrying with his bare hands infested soldiers so that he could give an example to the soldiers around and by all of his generals is described as fearless ,Napoleon himself said that the poison doses were put beside the so that they could drink them OPTIONALLY OK? And this is the greatest example that demonstrates his incapability without A FLEET supporting them
Napoleontas 3 years ago
did these soldiers love him too? Marching to Cairo, Napoleon left 2,200 of his troops dead, and 2,300 more seriously ill or wounded. Most of them he left behind, knowing that the Turks would cut off their heads as soon as his army left. They did their best to follow his retreat, crying out not to be abandoned. They straggled along, their throats parched in the debilitating heat, which reduced their cries to a croak. Injured officers were thrown from their litters and left to die in the dunes.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
hahahaha have you got anything else to say except Napoleon-egypt-abandoned-injured soldiers, etc etc? I suggest that you stay there and die together with your healthy troops and yourself, are you serious?
Napoleontas 3 years ago
how sick is it that you think I'm brain damaged because I detest the deaths of 5000 men yet YOU condone it. Wouldn't that make YOU the brain damaged one? Yes absolutely - as 100 people who is brain dead.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
you are talking about military decisions as humanitarian decisions and you dare to criticize military decisions with those arguments??
Napoleontas 3 years ago
You are incapable of understandin fundamental rules in warfare, if you dont kill you are dead 100% if the generals thought like you their army and themselfs would be dead within a few days, and talking about the turks you must learn what the Turks have done to humanity and then make ridiculous comments
Napoleontas 3 years ago
Soldiers were abandoned in the cornfields, which were still smouldering in the devastation of crops and villages ordered by Napoleon. In all, some 5,000 Frenchmen lost their lives
seldomseennow 3 years ago
napoleontas-is this the guy u admire? Do u admire Hitler 2? In his book, Le Crime de Napoléon, French historian Claude Ribbe has claimed that in the early 19th century, Napoleon used poison gas 2 put down slave rebellions in Haiti & Guadeloupe. Based on accounts left by French officers, enclosed spaces including the holds of ships were used as makeshift gas chambers where sulfur dioxide gas (probably generated by burning sulfur) was used to execute up to 100,000 rebellious slaves
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Napoleon himself was never in Haiti or Guadeloupe and please tell me this is a modern historian? Napoleon too was gassing people know? hahhhahahahahhahaa what stupidity rules the world, maybe in those "enclosed" wooden ships was used syclone b hahhaha!! You are funny in your stupidity indeed
Napoleontas 3 years ago
did Napolean's army that he ABANDONED in Eqypt also love him as much?
seldomseennow 3 years ago
Napoleon was not the head of the government when he left egypt exceptionally "smart" person ,it was not in his responsibilities to decide about troop movements and deployments. But anyway it is futile and obvious that you have to prove that Napoleon was a criminal . But You are too small and insignificant
Napoleontas 3 years ago
Napolean orderd French troops to kill all blacks over the age of 12 in Haiti. However, younger children were also killed - stabbed to death, put in sandbags and dropped into the sea. The Haitians fought to the death for independence, which they finally declared in 1804.Prisoners on both sides were regularly tortured and killed, and their heads were mounted on the walls of stockades or on spikes beside the roads.Non-combatants, too, were raped and slaughtered.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
"He couldn't do otherwise"? like that makes it ok? HE COULD HAVE DONE OTHERWISE - he didn't have to invade Eqypt. that's what he could have done NOT INVADE. let me see if I have your ass backwards reasoning right. Napolean INVADES and then executes 5000 men and you say he had no choice? RUBBISH he CHOOSE to invade. You are an enabler and condoner of tyrant.
seldomseennow 3 years ago
He shouldnt invade egypt sure he should have left the English that were trying to destroy him ,untouched, you are born to die in unbearable decadence, and as Napoleon said, glory fades but obscurity is permanent.

WarriorWolff 3 years ago 2
The French did manage to cross the bridge on the first day of the battle, they had to retire again. Another two days of heavy fighting ensued before Bonaparte and his commanders managed to solve the conundrum of how to dislodge the Austrian defenders and cross the Alpone to Arcole, which they finally achieved in gathering darkness on 17 November.
