  • Thank you very much for this guide, importing minecraft textures ;P

  • thank you so much

  • thank you

  • When I save the VTF to my Team Fortress 2 materials folder, it does not appear in the materials list in Hammer :/

  • @cheat12code Did you also create a .vmt file?

  • @cheat12code

Ahhh it works now :P thanks

  • I would not make the texture smaller to 512x512 if there is a better 1024x1024 version.

  • @gtamikesvideos I would. 1024x1024 is an unnecessarily high resolution for world textures, and not only does it take more time to save, it's a bigger file which makes the map take longer to download, and displaying 1024x1024 textures uses more of the GPU memory so it will run a lot worse on anything but high end machines.

  • @Imp0s5ible

we are not stuck in 2004 anymore :P

  • @gtamikesvideos Several huge textures still make the map run slower and take ages to download, and just because you have a high-end rig and a lightning fast internet connection doesn't mean your entire audience does.

Like it or not, as long as you're mapping for this game, I'm afraid you *are* stuck in 2004.

  • @Imp0s5ible

    .bz2

  • @gtamikesvideos I can only assume by that you mean the compression method. I would appreciate it if you would please type in full sentences. Anyway, while compression indeed does help, it will still result in hefty map files that are not worth the resolution increase. Besides as I already said, not everyone has a great computer and forcing people with low-end rigs to use high-res textures isn't going to go well.

  • Ok so, if i put this in a map, will other people have to download the texture files? Or will it be saved in to the bsp?

  • @rockoman100 Watch part 2(link in the description) on how to package custom textures into your map.

The part on packaging textures is at the 8:30 mark.

  • @Imp0s5ible you srsly couldnt just tell me..i- ok you know what il watch the damn video :|

  • @Imp0s5ible Hey this was a great tut but .. i have one problem, when i use my texture i can see it everywhere in my map, even if i have 5 walls covering it i can still see it, how do i fix this or what have i done wrong ? lol

  • @rockoman100 download pakrat and it will be s aved in the bsp.

  • @moviemaker310 Haha i actually figured that out, but thanks anyway, your comment could help a lot for other people (thumbs up)

  • THIS. IS. LEARNING. MUSIC. so sit calm chilluns.

  • thank you!, this is useful especially how the directions are concise and clear, truly nice work.

  • I have a question, I textured my ground with a carpet texture, then I thought it looked ugly and decided to go with tile instead. Even though I've replaced it when I run map it is still that carpet level. Any suggestions?

  • @phongbong This doesn't sound like a texture problem.

Apparently the second compile of your map(the one with the tile texture) has some kind of error which probably prevented it from being copied.

If you PM me your compile log of the map I could tell you more.

  • @Imp0s5ible I figured it out. Apparently I had a duplicate of my ground, and they were interfering with each other. :b Thanks for replying!

  • I am looking to make a netting type texture. so I will have solid parts and see through parts. how do i make a see through part (Invisible)

  • @KosukiFire If you use paint dot net, then you can make parts "see-trough" by selecting the desired area and pressing the delete key. This works similarly in photoshop although please note that you won't be able to make it see trough by deleting in photoshop if the image is on the "background" layer.

In both cases, you will know an area is transparent when you see white and grey checkers in its place(these will not show ingame, instead they will be transparent).

  • getting pink black crap , can't find a way to fix it.

  • @desetnik15second There could be many reasons for this. Make sure that:

    - Your texture is 128x128 or larger

    - Both your texture dimensions are a power of 2 (128x128, 256x256 or 512x512)

    - Make sure $basetexture points to the right file

    - Make sure the $basetexture doesn't contain the materials folder:

    WRONG: $basetexture "materials/newtextures/mytexture"

    RIGHT: $basetexture "newtextures/mytexture"

If all else fails, PM me the contents of your .vmt file, and I'm sure I can figure it out.

  • @Imp0s5ible I already fixed it. It was the basetexture directory problem

  • @Imp0s5ible thanks anyway

  • @desetnik15second

If you used vtfedit, double check it, it generally messes up with the $basetexture

  • I installed a texture pack from FPSbanana just as said in this vid, all the textures are just errors and black and purple squares : /

    Help please!

  • @swebuilder This video is for creating textures, not installing texture packs.

In any case, which texture pack was this and exactly where did you extract it?

  • @Imp0s5ible I extratced all to my "counter-strike source/csstrike/materials/custom textures" folder.

and the texture pack was "488 dev textures" for css on fpsbanana, sorry but it seems like that i can't link the link here on youtube

  • @swebuilder It does matter where you extract the textures.

You see, it has to be in the exact place the .vmt file tells you.

I suggest you extract it to

    "counter-strike source/cstrike/"

If that doesn't work then try extracting it to

    "counter-strike source/cstrike/materials/"

  • @Imp0s5ible Well, the .VMT doesnt "tell" me any special place to extract it to, and none of those locations worked

  • seriously, Y is it always black and pink checkers! plz help me out man ive done all u said to do and it just comes out as pink and black checkers!

  • @TheSpaghettilolz There could be many reasons for this. Make sure that:

    - Your texture is 128x128 or larger

    - Both your texture dimensions are a power of 2 (128x128, 256x256 or 512x512)

    - Make sure $basetexture points to the right file

    - Make sure the $basetexture doesn't contain the materials folder:

    WRONG: $basetexture "materials/newtextures/mytexture"

    RIGHT: $basetexture "newtextures/mytexture"

If all else fails, PM me the entire contents of your .vmt file, and I'm sure I can figure it out.

  • @Imp0s5ible a man i sorted it, i worked out when i was making the vmt file i wasnt giving it a surface, which meant it didnt work

  • Absolutely love the music, and the tutorial is brilliant. Please, tell us the name of the song! :D

  • Hey for some reason, I made high res texture [2048,2048] the blur is too much and you have to be so close too see the actually texture and detail. When I take off the maps, it looks weird because it has no draw distance... Do you think you could explain on here too me?

  • @GrotesqueSteve That is due to anysotrophic filtering, textures become more low-res as you back away from them. You can try setting the anysotropic filtering higher than bilinear (up to x16) in your video settings, but everyone who plays your map has to do that. I'm not sure if it will work because world textures were not made to be that large.

Alternatively, you can try ticking the "No Level Of Detail" box when saving the .vtf, but it's not advisable with such a hi-res texture.

  • hate the music xD

    thanks!!!!

  • @manhuntblood Sorry for replying after so much time, but I just saw your comment, and now I can actually read it!

    Sugokuwakariyasuidesu!! Arigatou

    Am I right? :D

  • i dont have .VTF, help me

  • @zamogz Do you have a 64-bit OS?

  • @Imp0s5ible ye

  • @zamogz The problem is that the Paint.NET .vtf plugin uses a 32-bit library, and therefore will only work with 32-bit PDN. Possible solutions include somehow obtaining a 32-bit installation of Paint.NET(don't know if it's possible), or saving it as a .tga then importing it with VTFEdit, using File > Import, you can leave the settings as default as long as your texture is not transparent, then save it as .vtf.

Photoshop also has a .vtf plugin and can be forced to run on 32-bit on x64 OS-es.

  • OMG I love you so much ty this was a very informative tutorial and couldn't have been any better I've been looking all around for a good tutorial and I just couldn't find it but now that I see this I'm AMAZED

could have been better with sound :p but still great

    keep up the good work!

  • now that is is muted your tortorial is TOTALLY USELESS

  • @vawriss3 Well if you would've went to the extent of watching the video for ONE MORE MINUTE you would've realized that there are SUBTITLES.

But what do i expect from someone who won't even put any semantical effort into yelling at people on the internet?

  • i dont have .vtf :( plz help

  • @TheSpaghettilolz Do you have a 64-bit OS?

  • I have non steam sdk but i make all what you show but textures are black and purple :(

  • I don't have steam. How?

  • @StrikerxSoul If you don't have steam then you don't have any source game unless it's a warez version.

  • @Imp0s5ible Lol I got steam nw. Thanks for the texture website! Really helped me alot.

  • @StrikerxSoul Steam can be in the "valve" folder.

  • Comment removed

  • @Imp0s5ible Are you sure? I looked it up on another site and it sounded nothing like this song.

  • @ChubakaSteven I looked them up too, so i might've gotten the wrong song there. Let me check again... Yep, you're right. The actual song is Sunlight by Kevin Kendle. I checked up videos on it too, so this has got to be it.

  • Dude, what is this song? It's so tranquil.

    Nice tutorial, also!

  • When I do this i get pink and black checkerboard. :o

  • @PDAFreak14 PM me exactly what you did(tell me the settings and path you saved the .vtf and .vmt to and the contents of the .vmt).

  • @flex11111 The same folder as any Source engine version.

  • Where do you save it though? That wasn't established.

  • @clp120591 Sorry, save what?

  • @Imp0s5ible Sorry, i wasn't clear. Even though you did walk through the steps to covert a texture to be used in Hammer, it wasn't exactly clear where you should save a texture after you were finished.

  • @clp120591 It's in the video; you save it under your game's materials directory, for example c:/program files/steam/steamapps/username/counter-strike source/cstrike/materials

or for HL2 it's the same but it's

    username/half-life 2/hl2/materials

  • 7:39 Open with > WTFEdit

  • @TheRealAcren Fixed, thanks for the heads up.

  • @Imp0s5ible no, thanks for the tutorial

  • mute this video while watching,. if not youll get distracted

  • Just a question- if someone downloads your map, they won't need to download the custom textures, as well, right?

  • @Feghoot Well when you join a map on a CS:S server that you've never played on before, you automaticly download the custom textures.

  • @Beardactal As far as i know that's only if the server sets it to force the client to download each file, which is really tedious and nobody's going to do that for each map. That's why mappers need to pack their textures into the .bsp using PakRat.

  • @Feghoot You need to pack the textures inside the .bsp using a program called PakRat. You should google it and find some videos on how to use it as i don't think i have enough space to tell you here.

  • Thanks so much for that

  • I cant save as .vtf its not on the list?

  • @lott1217 @MrOopee69 Provided you have installed it correctly, the issue is probably that you have a 64-bit OS, in which case you have to save it as a .tga file(Paint.NET supports it by default). Then you have to import this .tga file into VTFEdit using the File > Import option. I believe you can leave the settings there at a default, and after that you can proceed to save it the same place as in the video.

  • @Imp0s5ible I did that instead because thats what I thought would work aswell but when I got it onto Hammer all that showed up as the texture was purple and black blocks and when I went into the game to see it all I saw was white instead of texture or purple blocks.

  • @lott1217 PM me with the full path of the .vtf file and the contents of the .vmt file and i'll see what i can do

  • @Imp0s5ible Its alright you dont have to ^_^ I gave up and instead replaced the textures lol. I was gonna have a room with some friends names hidden for them and i made texture with a texture and had their name in the center really big. Just decided to make the texture different and make blocks for the letters just real thin :p

  • you dont need subtitles your engish is perfect....

  • @FuzzySnuckums Unfortunately there are such things as hard of hearing, deafness, and idiotic companies muting my videos for the lulz, so unfortunately, i do need subtitles. =(

  • remove background music. it isnt necessary - its annoying.. i cant concentrate ..

  • how do i change the texture format form .wad to the format CSS uses?

  • When i use custom textures and save my map, others who download it will not se the textures at all. What do i need to do? Thanx for answer.

  • how do i import CS:S textures to Hammer? please i need it to get Hammer to work :(

  • Thankssss! i was having a problem with my banner

  • I cant see my textures annymre after i reinstalled hammer. Its just the shapes and grids in the camera. Please help!

  • can't i just use photoshop cs4 ??

  • @xXLynge60Xx You can use any program that either has a .vtf plugin for it(photoshop and PaintdotNET do), or if it can save as a .tga in which case you can convert it to a .vtf using VTFedit.

  • and I have PaintShopPro9 but its same proplem :o

  • I do everything what i see to 6:30 but I cant save that in .VTF file :o

  • .net framework take like a looooong time to download -.-

  • Is there not an easier way?

  • Can other people se my textures?

  • Michael Jacksons - Just beat it

    I <3 IT

  • Do you know how to make a water texture and make it work like water?

  • @Yomamafist I think you just set the material type to water in the .vmt file then you just make it water like everything else. I don't know how to make shaders though.

  • @Imp0s5ible

Have tried that. It just sounds like water when you shoot it and walk on it, it dosen't work like water. Just like a Block

  • @Yomamafist Try texturing all the other sides of the water block with the nodraw texture, and only texture one side with the water texture.

  • @Imp0s5ible

Have also tried that. Didn't work either.

I think maybe the vtm file should have an another code

  • @Yomamafist You can use GCFScape to open up the source materials folder and check out what the .vmt files for water textures have in them.

  • @Yomamafist

    Made it into water block?

  • @NineRoxs

and how will you do that besides putting a water texture on?

  • @Yomamafist

Well, is the block in properties water?

Ctrl + T if i remember it right.

And is the surface right one?

  • hey great tutorial but can you maybe make a tutorial that explains how to use crazybump to get bumpy textures into source ?

  • it didnt work for me :( did everything you said but it didnt work...

  • u are so hardcor! thanks for this i might try it! :0

  • i have like 6 textures to choose from and they are shit

  • how do i add textures that already exist..like if i wanted to make a poster or a portrait on a wall, how do i get that on?

  • If i'm reading this right you want to install already existing textures you downloaded from somewhere.

In that case you can just extract the contents of the archive to the "materials" folder of your game.

  • i want to make my own textures

  • if i use a custom texture on a map, and use this map on a public server (team fortress 2)

when people connect to this server, will they automatically get the texture, or will they get some error because they dont have the texture?

  • No, you need to use PakRat to pack the textures into the map.

  • do u HAVE to have paint?

  • You can have photoshop or any other program that has a plugin/is able to save .vtf files.

  • I have importet a door and then there is an empty space on half the picture. are there any way i can make the empty side transperant?

  • @Yomamafist It will transform into alpha(the transparent "color").

Make sure to save with the template "compressed texture with alpha" to keep the transparency when saving as a VTF.

  • Thanks man!

  • @Yomamafist Ah, stupid youtube somehow managed to only post the second half of my reply.

    Did it help you though?

  • Yea, it worked.

But tell me the first half anyway! :)

  • Well, i assumed by empty you meant filled by a solid color like black, so i told you to select that area in PaintdotNet and delete it. It will transform into alpha...

    So basically that was it

  • ah okay, but thanks anyway

  • how do you select individual object faces so u can apply textures to them ?

  • you have to have the object selected then, open the texture adjust window and select the texture then right click on the face of the object that you want to texture.

  • thank you

  • Thank you dude,i use this on to create tf2 texture,IT FU***** WORKS!

  • hey. Can i import a picture to sorce sdk.? one of my own pictures?

  • @rnen222 That is what's detailed in the video. Just use one of your own pictures instead of the one i used in the video.

  • kosz a segitseget :D

  • cool

  • lecci csinalj eggyet magyarul is,elore is kosz

Elore is koszi.

Szerintem keress rá youtube-on a "how to set up counter-strike deathmatch" szavakra.

  • You have a European accent mixed with a southern American accent. Pretty unique, never heard anything like it. I'm guessing you're from Austria, Slovakia, Hungary or Poland.

  • @sergei291 I don't think there is a 64-bit version, sorry.

  • i basically have the same problem as xbeanieluver

  • I think you need to create a WAD file since WAD (if Im not wrong) contains the material texture)

  • What if I have CS 1.6 with no-steam?

There is not a materials folder in my cstrike file and even when I am creating one valve will still not find my textures... what to do ? any idea?

  • CS 1.6 uses the Half-Life(GoldSRC) engine. This tutorial is for making custom textures for the Half-Life 2(SOURCE) engine.

I don't know how to create custom textures for GoldSRC, tough, sorry.

  • Its Working! Thanks Remeber when you download some textures you need to Edit The Code file

  • sorry for so much comments but another porblem i have is when i try to save my texture as a VTF in the new textures thing my paint shop stops working and closes please help

  • @Xbeanieluver i have the same problem as u it shuts down the program (crashes) when i save it.

  • Wonder why

  • I can not find materials in my epsiode1/episodeic folder if episodeic is even the right one please help

  • No offense but u said wideo lol 5:38

  • the music is very distracting

  • tH×

  • ill try that

  • ok its not a black and purple error anymore but its not the right texture either. its just white

  • I'd say you redo the vmt to make sure everything is correct. I've never experienced this kind of problem before. If the above doesn't work, try redoing everything from scratch.

If all fails then i'm clueless.

  • ok now it works but its an error (purple and black)

  • Make sure the vmt file is correct and that when saving the vtf you set the version to 7.2

  • i follow the steps but my texture isnt in the browse textures

  • Thanks! That really helps.

  • Nice, ty.

  • i don't know what i do

Ezek közül kattints a "CC" feliratú gombra.

Ezután mellette megjelenik hogy "English" és "Hungarian".

    A Hungarian-ra kattintva bekapcsolod a magyar feliratot.

  • cool now i can make textures to dod 1.3

    :P!!

  • also their is a program that binds textures/models to a map so if you want that pm me and i can send you the link and for anyone who uses editlife you already know about this

  • background music is sooooo distracting XD

  • Thanks for that tutorial man.

  • It's back up now.

  • Broken link

  • when my maps end up in the server my custom textures end up pink and black textured and i did everything correctly what do i do?

  • When you compile the map your custom textures aren't saved inside the map,

    so if someone
