As Derren himself puts it, there's always a certain degree of "showmanship and illusion involved". He isn't completely "honest" with his audience. However he insists that he is "honest about being dishonest".
You never know what's at work behind the scenes. Don't believe everything you hear, even if it may seem certain (especially from an illusionist).
as for the coffee beans he doesnt actually count them - he simply gets the correct bean - he tells the guy "count them if you wish" knowing the guy wont count them
So how do you suppose he gets the correct coffee bean then, your explanation does not say.
I think he recognises the patterns of where the bean lay, their colour and appearance and can then mentally "photgraph" these and count them extremely quickly in his head.
Also it depends how you speed read, it is not correct to say it is bullshit, done correctly it does work, but you do need to train your mind somewhat. What Derren is teaching Glen to do it to take in information subliminally.
So your explanation is EXACTLY what Derren tells you. A little naive no? He has said on many occasions that he very often lies about his method.
Derren also admits in his book he doesn't have eidetic memory - there is some evidence of this happening very rarely in childhood, almost no indication any adults have it. He uses very clever strategies for encoding and retrieving info from memory that wouldnt help him in a task like counting every single bean.
Not naive at all. I have seen him live and read the books which taught him his profession, well quite a few of them. Espcially Milton Erickson and of course Bandler & Grinder.
Of course he SOMETIMES lies about SOME of his methods. It would take the fun out of it otherwise. That does mean he lied on this occasion.
Ok so what is your explanation of picking correctly a supposedly randomly placed coffee bean, without sight of it being placed.
But remember he is very clever at tricking people - there could be any number of ways he does it.
As for speed reading: 1. People have to train to even become remotely good at it. 2. Training your eyes to move across the text faster is one thing but how well something is stored in memory and how easily retrievable it will be is a function of the depth of processing of text - there is no depth to Glen's processing so the info will only be encoded in a shallow way, it will disappear quickly
and be difficult to access. The real feat isn't one of processing the text but maintaining such a volume of information in long term memory and accessing that info through recall not recognition - in the quiz he isn't just preented with the words in the context they were initially encountered and given a few answers that might fit - (recognition) he has to actually "recall" the info. Seriously forGlen to have achieved this in the way Derren says I promise you is impossible.
It's obvious you don't listen. Derren explained clearly in the program that 1. Glen was not speed reading 2. It would've been impossible to remember with depth the information and 3. YES, THE INFORMATION WOULD DISAPPEAR QUICKLY.
He admits all of this and Glen has no intent on becoming some genius who memorizes the facts of the world. Furthermore, I doubt you can even perform something like this so does it matter how 'shallowly' he memorized it? Can you memorize hundreds of books better?
Therefore in the absence of an alternative explanation, we have to consider that perhaps he lied about his lying too and he really does have a eiditic memory. If you read his book and then watch him live, he does explain some of his stuff but obviously not all of it.
We know how he imoplants suggestions and we know how his show finale is done too.
The thing about pg 16 in the daily mail? didnt implant anything - the method he revealed there was a false one. remmber the girl didnt actually pick the number 16 or whatever it was she just opened it to a random point - so all that stuff about implanting the number was all for show. Theres a fuller explanation somewhere on youtube
Well there are two sides to Derren. He has said a lot of things, but he is good at subdefuge. The thing is Derren also says that and I quote
"I am always honest about my dishonesty".
so either he is an astonishingly clever bloke or we are all just stupid.
If I remember correctly the girl was asked what page she was on. From the stage view that will be ODDS on his right EVENS on his left. By looking at her eyes he'll know if she's on an ODD or EVEN page.
The pages in the newspaper were probably arranged beforehand so that she would pick page 14. there is a card trick based on the same principle. Where a player is asked to pick a pair of random cards. Whichever pair they pick the total will always be 14 or 15. Why because the deck was stacked to do that in the first place. You could stack a newspaper's pages in the same way. She would not have noticed that the pages did not run consecutively in the darkness of the theatre.
I think you're giving him too much credit. He said speed reading is bullshit and it really really is - that thing about flashing images briefly is still being studied with various manipulations today - and its true - even if people dont think they recognised an object when given a recognition task to test memory as opposed to recall they perform above chance. to go from that to speed reading having any basis in reality is a ridiculous leap - speed reading would be easy to verify scientifically
I think it's quite possible for him to be hypnotized himself. I read somewhere, whether it was said by Derren Brown, I'm not entirely sure...that hypnotism isn't actually hypnotizing someone but rather putting someone in a suggestible state that's good enough to have someone follow your suggestions. So having him go into that state might be easier than you'd imagine since he can come up with these unique situations.
TRICKING him however...is something that's probably difficult to do. ;D
He would probably go under quite quickly and easily. in the wax musium I think he is in an extremly deep state because he doesnt even blink. the trouble is who would he trust to let hypnotise him.
So where was the "trick" here, unless Glen had been told the answers in advance. Also how do you manage to count 1437 coffee beans so quickly. there are a few things in Derrens Book, which are contradictory. Did he actually finish University. I'm sure his book says he did'nt, although he still calls himself a BA(Hons), This is on a slide at the show before he comes on stage. Whatever I think he is extremely clever and intelligent and knows how to use his head !
Note that Derren says that the moderator in the pub is "the only person in the room" who knows the questions and answers. I think Derren´s team made the questions and the answers were planted in Glen´s subconscience.
The bean thing: I don´t know but I don´t believe it is photographic memory.
Well given that Glen reckoned that he did not have a good memory, (just playing Devil's Advocate here you understand) and Derren did say that if the information in Glen's short term memory were not refreshed then it would disappear. The answers would have to have been rehearsed in advance. He also said that the questions were set by the moderator. He did not say the moderator was part of his team. Plus of course there were a lot of people in that competition
the only thing that was consistent was that the people in the pub knew there was going to be a film crew there, which is fair enough, even if they were not told what the show was.
No wonder Derren hid in the garden, if he had appeared everyone in the pub would have twigged what was going on.
There is a lot of evidence tyo support speed reading. The RAF used it in the 50's to identify enemy aircraft, from a picture flashed very quickly onto a screen for about 1/500 th of a second. It was still identifiable by some people. i.e what type of aircraft etc. I suppose there must be something called "speed counting" too, which would explain the coffee bean stunt
But if such a thing as speedreading existed, I think it is something you don´t learn within a week to an extent where you could learn the contents of 100s of books in a few days. I guess it is a skill that has to be learned and trained over years.
I would imagine to become a professional speedreader, it would take years. probably like Derren, who remember is very skilled in how to use his (and our) heads. I would also imagine that his techniques for learning have been studied and perfected over many years, with many deifferent sources of reference at his disposal and a half decent production crew. I cannot think of another answer, but I do not think the answers were known in advance, not if the competition is held every year.
Computersolutions mate, thanks alot, relaly appreciate you taking your time to upload this. Great fan of Derren Brown. Still wanna know how he done this though? I'lld love to be able to imporve my memory. You got any ideas how he does this.
Thanks very much for that, you comments are much appreciated. How does he do it, well I think this particular performance is probably true, given that Derren is a bit of a trixster and also having seen him live too.
I think it is possible to absorb many facts, by speed-reading ashe says taking in the information peripherally.
The recent show is worth a visit if you can make it to The Garrick Theatre, London. He is there until June. You could ask him he is very approachable
Go and look for the SPEEDREADERX software. It is quite easy to learn. I have just been playing with the example, you can certainly improve your reading speed. Presumably this is also how Derrenis ableto count the Coffee Beans so quickly

Read Vol 2 of Erickson.

The question I would like to ask Derren is:
Given his knowledge of how our heads work, what would it take for him to be hypnotised himself, given that he probably knows every trick going !
Would it take someone who has even more knowledge that he has ?
computersolutions164 3 years ago
I think it's quite possible for him to be hypnotized himself. I read somewhere, whether it was said by Derren Brown, I'm not entirely sure...that hypnotism isn't actually hypnotizing someone but rather putting someone in a suggestible state that's good enough to have someone follow your suggestions. So having him go into that state might be easier than you'd imagine since he can come up with these unique situations.
TRICKING him however...is something that's probably difficult to do. ;D
novitasx 3 years ago
Derren Brown can most certainly be hypnotised.
He would probably go under quite quickly and easily. in the wax musium I think he is in an extremly deep state because he doesnt even blink. the trouble is who would he trust to let hypnotise him.

Interestingly though, that Derren talks about Speedreading in his book Tricks of the Mind and a course he attended. And he says that it´s bullsh**.
I think he uses much more tricks (Andy Nyman is his co-author) in combination with clever suggestion and cutting away some pre-show work.
roiboos 3 years ago
So where was the "trick" here, unless Glen had been told the answers in advance. Also how do you manage to count 1437 coffee beans so quickly. there are a few things in Derrens Book, which are contradictory. Did he actually finish University. I'm sure his book says he did'nt, although he still calls himself a BA(Hons), This is on a slide at the show before he comes on stage. Whatever I think he is extremely clever and intelligent and knows how to use his head !
computersolutions164 3 years ago
Note that Derren says that the moderator in the pub is "the only person in the room" who knows the questions and answers. I think Derren´s team made the questions and the answers were planted in Glen´s subconscience.
The bean thing: I don´t know but I don´t believe it is photographic memory.
roiboos 3 years ago
Well given that Glen reckoned that he did not have a good memory, (just playing Devil's Advocate here you understand) and Derren did say that if the information in Glen's short term memory were not refreshed then it would disappear. The answers would have to have been rehearsed in advance. He also said that the questions were set by the moderator. He did not say the moderator was part of his team. Plus of course there were a lot of people in that competition
computersolutions164 3 years ago
the only thing that was consistent was that the people in the pub knew there was going to be a film crew there, which is fair enough, even if they were not told what the show was.

I suppose there must be something called "speed counting" too, which would explain the coffee bean stunt
computersolutions164 3 years ago
But if such a thing as speedreading existed, I think it is something you don´t learn within a week to an extent where you could learn the contents of 100s of books in a few days. I guess it is a skill that has to be learned and trained over years.
roiboos 3 years ago
I would imagine to become a professional speedreader, it would take years. probably like Derren, who remember is very skilled in how to use his (and our) heads. I would also imagine that his techniques for learning have been studied and perfected over many years, with many deifferent sources of reference at his disposal and a half decent production crew. I cannot think of another answer, but I do not think the answers were known in advance, not if the competition is held every year.

Here you go. This is a link to the actual event that took place in which Glen was involved

Just because Derren said something does not mean that it is the truth.
CrapSignal 3 years ago
I never said it was entirely truthful, I looked for evidence of that possibility though. Derren is economical with the truth, thats his job.
Don't think he would lie about an event reported in the national press though and held every year in North London.
He might just not tell ALL of the truth. If he did it would spoil the effect, don't you think ?
He is a clever man
How much do you believe ?
How much do you NOT believe ?

thank you for uploading this episode :D it was fantastic.
I think I'll check out that Speedreader X thing. Does it cost? well.. nothing's ever free..
bordonthestreet 3 years ago
Yes it does but I don't think it is tooooooo expensive. It depends on how far you want to take it
computersolutions164 3 years ago
does this work for revising for exams?
NCrosskey92 3 years ago
I s'pose it would actually, but you hve to be able to recall the information. I found a rather good speed reading site the other day.
Put SPEEDREADER X into Google.

Computersolutions mate, thanks alot, relaly appreciate you taking your time to upload this. Great fan of Derren Brown. Still wanna know how he done this though? I'lld love to be able to imporve my memory. You got any ideas how he does this.
Thanks again mate

Thanks very much for that, you comments are much appreciated. How does he do it, well I think this particular performance is probably true, given that Derren is a bit of a trixster and also having seen him live too.
I think it is possible to absorb many facts, by speed-reading ashe says taking in the information peripherally.
The recent show is worth a visit if you can make it to The Garrick Theatre, London. He is there until June. You could ask him he is very approachable
computersolutions164 3 years ago
Go and look for the SPEEDREADERX software. It is quite easy to learn. I have just been playing with the example, you can certainly improve your reading speed. Presumably this is also how Derrenis ableto count the Coffee Beans so quickly
computersolutions164 3 years ago
When did the new series begin? I have all of Derren's work up until now
