  • My wife does this all the time. She remembers little stuff I said 10 years ago

  • Unbelievable!

  • i love how unimpressed his wife looks

  • @ichbinhornig10 Derren actually told his wife to not react in any way in the 2nd part of this episode.

  • "Carfax" is a clue to how this is done. ''Capture and rumination, functional avoidance, and executive control (CaRFAX): Three processes that underlie overgeneral memory.

Its is in the book. Its in the book "Autobiographical Memory Specificity and Psychopathology: A Special Issue of Cognition and Emotion" Google it you you may figure out Derren's Riddle. Good Luck : )

  • Knowledge without understanding is worthless, exept if you only need to answer a quizz.

  • @GregTom2 You do understand the knowlage you gain through speed learning although only subconsciously so that you can pull out information one by one.

  • @GregTom2 Hear, hear.

I'd take understanding over volume any day.

  • @Unclevertitle Well you should start by understanding the point of what you just watched then.

  • @matthewkoz

    Done.

What about that post suggested I didn't understand the point of the video?

Yes, it's amazing and impressive, useful in particular situations that require a quick recall of surface information.

The man could recall the information but he didn't properly know what he knew. He didn't understand it.

I'm just saying that I prefer depth over breadth.

  • @Unclevertitle well i need this for mine exam tmwr loll

  • Derren Brown needs to establish a Jedi Academy.

  • haha the be sharps

  • I NEED THAT SHIT FOR MED SCHOOL RIGHT N-O-W.

  • i need this secret so bad... my finals are in a week and i'm probably screwed! too much reading to do

  • Awesome show, thanks for uploading

  • does anybody know the learning technique?????

  • right technique for the wrong person.... students like me would be very very jealous of Glenn watching this

  • this is unbeliveable.

  • This is again an issue of trust. A quiz can be cheated, the tested questions out of the book could have been picked after subliminally messaging him the answers. The entire act could be setup. Remember the girl who hit the queen of hearts with a dart? She was an actor.

Sometimes Derren Brown performs Hypnosis or suggestion and sometimes its a magic trick. He never really stated clearly which one it is here.

But there are companies out there who sell fast reading. And they are all frauds.

  • @omnissient

then how do you explain the random testquestions?

(btw I think it's very good that you're being sceptical)

  • How very heartwarming.

  • Derren has uses his knowledge and skills for the greater good

  • Its amazing what the mind can do. If only we could access all of its abilities.

  • An interesting program--but also amusing, because that quiz didn't require that level of studying. Seriously, I could answer 3/4 of those from the top of my head.

  • @ksocean I found it interesting that he did not know about the dung beetle one.

  • has any one tried to do this in real life ? has it worked or nah ?

  • what roflitschris said.

props for finding and posting the show up.

  • thanks for uploading all his vids, i've been looking through your channel for the past few days :P

  • You are most welcome. I have my beady eye out waiting for more Derren stuff

  • whats the name of his books

  • @computersolutions164 He has a new series coming out soon!! Can't wait :D

  • @5Element4 Any idea what it's called or when it's on ?

  • @computersolutions164 unfortunately not :( just read on his facebook page that something new is coming out. If I find out, I'll let you know :P

  • @computersolutions164 Derren Brown's new series: derrenbrown.co.uk/blog/2011/10/series/

  • @5Element4 Excellent Thank you - i'll look out for it, looks pretty good

  • @llamapie24 How old did you say you were?

  • Dude...Thats just cool, i hope he comes out with a lot of books that change our way of thinking..

  • how cool it'd be to have Derren as father...

  • Yes it would be cool but the chances of Derren ever having children are less than winning the lottery as he "Plays for the wrong team !"

  • wasn't he bisexual? anyways, I don't really care about his sexual life =P

  • there must be a lot of disappointed women.

  • @computersolutions164hold on, he may very well adopt a child or 'rent an oven' :)

i can totally picture him doing something like that at a later stage in life

  • @lucius215 Perhaps so but Derren is very very "pink" and I would not hold your breath, Anyway kids would cramp his style and he would not like the competition if a son or daughter decided to taker up magic - Can you imagine....

  • lol, yeah youve got a point, i guess time will tell.

  • @bbbbbb222222 No it wouldn't [bangs table], or would it.

  • @maramyfriend I would prefer it to my actual one. Good genetics, shitload of money to help in your education and life in general, can teach you awesome things about the mind and teach you fucking superpowers.

  • im gonna use this to study for my bio midterms lol

  • i had beaten my high school and college leagues

  • On the final, this guy really annoyed me, but he was okay here.

  • amazing

  • i got an examne friday... better try this... ?

  • Especially since you can't spell "exam."

  • ha ha,,, I think he shouldn't...

  • This was absolutely brilliant :O WOW So you can know everything just because your mental photograph :O AMAZING!!! Thanks Derren Brown :D

  • remember he also said that, if u dont keep doing that over a short period of time it will fade away form ur mind

  • Yes you are right :) Thanks for the answer ;)

  • oh gosh.. i wonder if knew this technique back in school.. i would have beaten the best of the geniuses :P

  • Photographic memory, that's how he did it... Basicaly he synthesizes images and pictures in his sub-conciousness into words... You can do it too.

  • You can do it quite quickly if you train yor memory. I have seen Derren play "20 Questions" live, with 3 audience members simultaniously. He must have remembered every possible answer in advance. there is no other way he could have done it dfrom where I was sitting

  • Hey, did he explain how this works in his book? I can't seem to find it where i'm staying so i'm thinking of importing it.. If not, any idea where you can learn this? I'm thinking no but i'm asking anyway..:P

  • No he does not but there are plent of "Speed Reading" sites

Stick it into Google and see what you get

  • You probably cant learn the exact way he's doing it in this video can't learn this video, but I'd say it's about 80% ZOX Pro learning course. This technique isn't speed reading, the idea is to learn to direct the attention of your subconscious to something specific and learn to get that information back to a conscious level.

  • wow...could somebody teach me hw 2 do that???it will really helps me 2 answer de exam.....plz teach me lorh...

  • he just touched in books.... how is that possible?! im :OOOOOO!!! WOOOT

  • One curious thing that many people who watch Darren Brown, or other shows similar to it, and many who are VERY interested in psychology is the assumption that the show is a trustworthy authority. I'm sure Darren Brown takes into consideration that the things he tells the viewers are going to be taken as the truth and when he shows them to be the way he presented, the viewer is in awe. Keep in mind this is a tv show and Darren is in total control, he can say or do whatever he wants.

  • Comment removed

  • The mind really is an incredible thing. I heard that the average humain only uses 15 or 20% of his brain capacity, max. That's amazing.

  • That's a myth, you can look it up.

  • we use all of our brain, just at different times

  • Whats awesome is.

Once he has that knowledge of how to remember all this stuff.

He can use it anytime he wants.....

    certainly a magnificent treat

  • if only it was an individual quiz he will be a clear 1st.

you can use this trick in blackjack.

  • it works....why ive been using it for 2 years you end up getting good at it if you practice everyday you dont learn much unless u get quized alot and if u want to enjoy the book i dont recomened it but i have noticed i read much faster and i mean much much faster

  • hey can u show me how to do it, plzz, send me instructions or video or something, or were u found it. cuz i really need it

  • yes could you plz describe in further detail how you do it and what your specific techniques are?

i find this to be absolutely extraordinary!

  • its not computersolutions164

    its derren brown

  • AWESOME!

  • lol @ all the selfproclaimed authorities on mentalism here, thanks for thickening the cloud for the rest ^^

Great treat this, he chose a standup fella.

  • official temporary nerd being that he'll lose the information

  • Friken impressive!

  • I am the only one who found the guy being tested unconvincing? It just seemed like he was acting in part two, maybe just me.

  • i was thinking the same thing

  • i dont know if this is real but i tryed the same meathod and passed a history test that i didn't study for and i hate history i passed with a pretty big score too

  • pretty impresive darren could you do that with me please it could hel me in school

  • ...

  • *derren

  • *Pretty *impressive, *Derren. *Could *me, *please? *It *help *school.

  • *why *don't *you *ask *him

  • The * means correction of a word written earlier. I was pointing out to 00000Ria00000 that if he was going to pick on 32121452145225255658's spelling, there was plenty more there.

  • Ah I see sorry. I thought it was funny !

  • Well, since you can't spell, I'll count that as 'not being 1st' and as a loose. You loose much, much more than Glen and I doubt, after that show of obvious arrogance, that anyone much cares about anything in 'your book'.

No one can be first in everything (you've just proven that) and no one ever will.

  • this guy was so likable, you cant help but be happy for him

  • 2nd place not too shabby

  • whats the song playing during the quiz??

  • lol aslong as there is unbelievable feats being performed, there will always be fags on youtube to not beleive it

Best off letting them walow in their own self doubt

  • Well said

  • Greatest quote iv ever heard! Lmao

  • hahaha.. need permission to paste..hahah. good one exactly..

  • I try, i try.

  • @NoR3m0rs3 You asshole! I speed learn and remember books myself and I would love for you to try zoxpro.com if you want to know how this is done.

  • @NoR3m0rs3 It is plausible, but I wouldn't bet on it; no rational person would.

As Derren himself puts it, there's always a certain degree of "showmanship and illusion involved". He isn't completely "honest" with his audience. However he insists that he is "honest about being dishonest".

You never know what's at work behind the scenes. Don't believe everything you hear, even if it may seem certain (especially from an illusionist).

Just remember, Occam's razor is your best friend.

  • as for the coffee beans he doesnt actually count them - he simply gets the correct bean - he tells the guy "count them if you wish" knowing the guy wont count them

  • So how do you suppose he gets the correct coffee bean then, your explanation does not say.

I think he recognises the patterns of where the bean lay, their colour and appearance and can then mentally "photgraph" these and count them extremely quickly in his head.

Also it depends how you speed read, it is not correct to say it is bullshit, done correctly it does work, but you do need to train your mind somewhat. What Derren is teaching Glen to do it to take in information subliminally.

  • So your explanation is EXACTLY what Derren tells you. A little naive no? He has said on many occasions that he very often lies about his method.

Derren also admits in his book he doesn't have eidetic memory - there is some evidence of this happening very rarely in childhood, almost no indication any adults have it. He uses very clever strategies for encoding and retrieving info from memory that wouldnt help him in a task like counting every single bean.

Im not sure of his method...

  • Not naive at all. I have seen him live and read the books which taught him his profession, well quite a few of them. Espcially Milton Erickson and of course Bandler & Grinder.

Of course he SOMETIMES lies about SOME of his methods. It would take the fun out of it otherwise. That does mean he lied on this occasion.

Ok so what is your explanation of picking correctly a supposedly randomly placed coffee bean, without sight of it being placed.

I have seen how he does a lot of his tricks.

  • But remember he is very clever at tricking people - there could be any number of ways he does it.

As for speed reading: 1. People have to train to even become remotely good at it. 2. Training your eyes to move across the text faster is one thing but how well something is stored in memory and how easily retrievable it will be is a function of the depth of processing of text - there is no depth to Glen's processing so the info will only be encoded in a shallow way, it will disappear quickly

  • and be difficult to access. The real feat isn't one of processing the text but maintaining such a volume of information in long term memory and accessing that info through recall not recognition - in the quiz he isn't just preented with the words in the context they were initially encountered and given a few answers that might fit - (recognition) he has to actually "recall" the info. Seriously forGlen to have achieved this in the way Derren says I promise you is impossible.

    Entertaining though

  • It's obvious you don't listen. Derren explained clearly in the program that 1. Glen was not speed reading 2. It would've been impossible to remember with depth the information and 3. YES, THE INFORMATION WOULD DISAPPEAR QUICKLY.

He admits all of this and Glen has no intent on becoming some genius who memorizes the facts of the world. Furthermore, I doubt you can even perform something like this so does it matter how 'shallowly' he memorized it? Can you memorize hundreds of books better?

    No.

  • Therefore in the absence of an alternative explanation, we have to consider that perhaps he lied about his lying too and he really does have a eiditic memory. If you read his book and then watch him live, he does explain some of his stuff but obviously not all of it.

We know how he imoplants suggestions and we know how his show finale is done too.

  • The thing about pg 16 in the daily mail? didnt implant anything - the method he revealed there was a false one. remmber the girl didnt actually pick the number 16 or whatever it was she just opened it to a random point - so all that stuff about implanting the number was all for show. Theres a fuller explanation somewhere on youtube

  • Well there are two sides to Derren. He has said a lot of things, but he is good at subdefuge. The thing is Derren also says that and I quote

"I am always honest about my dishonesty".

so either he is an astonishingly clever bloke or we are all just stupid.

If I remember correctly the girl was asked what page she was on. From the stage view that will be ODDS on his right EVENS on his left. By looking at her eyes he'll know if she's on an ODD or EVEN page.

    Read Vol 2 of Erickson.

  • The pages in the newspaper were probably arranged beforehand so that she would pick page 14. there is a card trick based on the same principle. Where a player is asked to pick a pair of random cards. Whichever pair they pick the total will always be 14 or 15. Why because the deck was stacked to do that in the first place. You could stack a newspaper's pages in the same way. She would not have noticed that the pages did not run consecutively in the darkness of the theatre.

  • I think you're giving him too much credit. He said speed reading is bullshit and it really really is - that thing about flashing images briefly is still being studied with various manipulations today - and its true - even if people dont think they recognised an object when given a recognition task to test memory as opposed to recall they perform above chance. to go from that to speed reading having any basis in reality is a ridiculous leap - speed reading would be easy to verify scientifically

  • Can i just thank you for uploading this, i messed up my video, thought i'd missed it for good, but now i haven't. thanks again

  • You are most welcome thanks

  • The question I would like to ask Derren is:

Given his knowledge of how our heads work, what would it take for him to be hypnotised himself, given that he probably knows every trick going !

Would it take someone who has even more knowledge that he has ?

  • I think it's quite possible for him to be hypnotized himself. I read somewhere, whether it was said by Derren Brown, I'm not entirely sure...that hypnotism isn't actually hypnotizing someone but rather putting someone in a suggestible state that's good enough to have someone follow your suggestions. So having him go into that state might be easier than you'd imagine since he can come up with these unique situations.

TRICKING him however...is something that's probably difficult to do. ;D

  • Derren Brown can most certainly be hypnotised.

He would probably go under quite quickly and easily. in the wax musium I think he is in an extremly deep state because he doesnt even blink. the trouble is who would he trust to let hypnotise him.

  • his MASTER muahahahaha

  • Interestingly though, that Derren talks about Speedreading in his book Tricks of the Mind and a course he attended. And he says that it´s bullsh**.

I think he uses much more tricks (Andy Nyman is his co-author) in combination with clever suggestion and cutting away some pre-show work.

  • So where was the "trick" here, unless Glen had been told the answers in advance. Also how do you manage to count 1437 coffee beans so quickly. there are a few things in Derrens Book, which are contradictory. Did he actually finish University. I'm sure his book says he did'nt, although he still calls himself a BA(Hons), This is on a slide at the show before he comes on stage. Whatever I think he is extremely clever and intelligent and knows how to use his head !

  • Note that Derren says that the moderator in the pub is "the only person in the room" who knows the questions and answers. I think Derren´s team made the questions and the answers were planted in Glen´s subconscience.

The bean thing: I don´t know but I don´t believe it is photographic memory.

  • Well given that Glen reckoned that he did not have a good memory, (just playing Devil's Advocate here you understand) and Derren did say that if the information in Glen's short term memory were not refreshed then it would disappear. The answers would have to have been rehearsed in advance. He also said that the questions were set by the moderator. He did not say the moderator was part of his team. Plus of course there were a lot of people in that competition

  • the only thing that was consistent was that the people in the pub knew there was going to be a film crew there, which is fair enough, even if they were not told what the show was.

No wonder Derren hid in the garden, if he had appeared everyone in the pub would have twigged what was going on.

  • There is a lot of evidence tyo support speed reading. The RAF used it in the 50's to identify enemy aircraft, from a picture flashed very quickly onto a screen for about 1/500 th of a second. It was still identifiable by some people. i.e what type of aircraft etc. I suppose there must be something called "speed counting" too, which would explain the coffee bean stunt

  • But if such a thing as speedreading existed, I think it is something you don´t learn within a week to an extent where you could learn the contents of 100s of books in a few days. I guess it is a skill that has to be learned and trained over years.

  • I would imagine to become a professional speedreader, it would take years. probably like Derren, who remember is very skilled in how to use his (and our) heads. I would also imagine that his techniques for learning have been studied and perfected over many years, with many deifferent sources of reference at his disposal and a half decent production crew. I cannot think of another answer, but I do not think the answers were known in advance, not if the competition is held every year.

  • Here you go. This is a link to the actual event that took place in which Glen was involved

aitch te te pee colon slash slash blog(dot)dave(dot)org(dot)uk slash 2008 slash 04 slash pub-quiz(dot)html

  • Go and have a look at the link. it takes you to a description of the actual event when it happened.

  • Just because Derren said something does not mean that it is the truth.

  • I never said it was entirely truthful, I looked for evidence of that possibility though. Derren is economical with the truth, thats his job.

Don't think he would lie about an event reported in the national press though and held every year in North London.

He might just not tell ALL of the truth. If he did it would spoil the effect, don't you think ?

    He is a clever man

How much do you believe ?

How much do you NOT believe ?

  • thank you for uploading this episode :D it was fantastic.

I think I'll check out that Speedreader X thing. Does it cost? well.. nothing's ever free..

  • Yes it does but I don't think it is tooooooo expensive. It depends on how far you want to take it

  • does this work for revising for exams?

  • I s'pose it would actually, but you hve to be able to recall the information. I found a rather good speed reading site the other day.

    Put SPEEDREADER X into Google.

  • photoreading Derren brown style anyone?

thanks for uploading by the way

  • Thank you I will upload the rest soon.

  • Computersolutions mate, thanks alot, relaly appreciate you taking your time to upload this. Great fan of Derren Brown. Still wanna know how he done this though? I'lld love to be able to imporve my memory. You got any ideas how he does this.

    Thanks again mate

  • Thanks very much for that, you comments are much appreciated. How does he do it, well I think this particular performance is probably true, given that Derren is a bit of a trixster and also having seen him live too.

I think it is possible to absorb many facts, by speed-reading ashe says taking in the information peripherally.

The recent show is worth a visit if you can make it to The Garrick Theatre, London. He is there until June. You could ask him he is very approachable

  • Go and look for the SPEEDREADERX software. It is quite easy to learn. I have just been playing with the example, you can certainly improve your reading speed. Presumably this is also how Derrenis ableto count the Coffee Beans so quickly

  • When did the new series begin? I have all of Derren's work up until now

  • It started last night May 2nd

  • Thanks for uploading! Very enjoyable. :)
