does anyone ever wonder why the transfiguration couldn't have just happened in at the temple in jerusalem, so EVERYONE could have seen it and no one would have doubted jesus. i mean, this changes nothing about the crucifixion, since the romans still would have executed him for stiring up trouble on passover. i mean, why bother with all the other miracles when clearly this is only one anybody would need to believe - "holy shit, i just saw the 'revenant' of moses and elijah"
@nubbs The Romans didn't drive the execution, it was largely the religious leaders. The Romans wanted little to do with it, but it was illegal to execute people outside of the Roman authority. That's why Jesus had to go between judges who could sentence him to execution & why he was beaten severely before crucified. Pilate also symbolically washed his hands of it. So this miracle could have prevented the crucifixion, which is maybe why they were told not to tell anyone until later. Who knows?
yes, biblically it was the temple leaders (at least in john, and to a lesser extent in the later synoptics). but historically it is far more likely that it was pilate and the roman authorities and not caiphus and the sanhedrin who had jesus executed.
one also has to ask why john and peter abandon jesus after his arrest after having seen something as miraculous as the transfiguration
