Interlocked bounces, even if they alternate, thus would have disqualified you in 2005. Of course I can't find the current set of rules, so who knows. You should go to a qualifier for WFD and see how you do.
They are bouncing, but it's a controlled bounce. I'm not sure what it takes to impress you, but you might want to check out my Fast Samba videos - same technique, different application.
I find it funny that so many jealous adolescents have commented on this video. If you think that these are doubles or press rolls, you need to go back to the basics. The motion of the arm is completely irrelevant, and bringing it up in a counter argument shows a disgusting lack in education. If the sticks are moving in a rlrlrlrl fashion, then it's a single stroke roll, which is exactly what's happening in this video. Please reply to me so I can embarrass you.
@SubwayStar7 no, because hes not lifting his drum stick. you can't just let it bounce. that is what makes it double or triple. doesn't matter is they are "interlocking" or not if your doing singles, you have a tight grip on the drum sticks. and completely lift them up not just bounce it.
@RealBearWolf68 While that's true to a degree, technically if he's playing alternating strokes, whether he's bouncing or not, it's still a single-stroke roll.
really. how could you even put single in the title. if you look at how much your arms move, you can tell it's definitely not singles. and i'm sure someone else could manage that as well
@blargandstuff7 It's the sticks, not the arms, that are playing. If you see someone else doing this, please send me a link. I'm still learning as much as I can about it.
Whenever someone posts an unusual drum lick there are always the usual insults. I wish those guys would post their own version. It's easy to criticize but it may not be so easy to play it correctly.
@Lorenzo1950 I guess it depends on how you would define single strokes. I should add that although this video has gotten lots of views, this is in my opinion the least musical and/or useful application of this "3 for 1" technique. I'm learning new ways to apply it every week. My "soca" and "cowbell" videos are a couple of good examples. Thanks for your interest!
Ok, can you explain it to an old guy? Each hand is playing independent triplets but isn't a single stroke roll primarily hand to hand? Can you make another video and elaborate or slow it down so I can try it? It looks to me as if both hands are playing independent triplets.
@Lorenzo1950 Each hand is playing continuous triplets (Rrr Rrr, etc. and Lll Lll etc.) with no pauses. But they are staggered such that the lefts slightly follow the rights. The result is RLrlrl RLrlrl, etc. I've been planning to do a slow motion video, but haven't got around to it yet. Once you can do the one handed triplets in each hand, try them simultaneously, then try starting one hand right after the other. It should end up sounding like a bad buzz roll.
@2015beast Thanks for watching and your honesty. Can you elaborate? What do you mean by "open handed.' And is that technique inherently bad, or is this a bad example of it?
@karinetex1 open as in the spacing between your thumb and forefinger pretty much. and no, it's not inherently bad i have a private lesson teacher hates it. haha. and i've struglled to close up my grip as well and he chews me out alot. on the other hand our center snare drummer- who is in the final stage of trying out for the DCI drumline, and our head directors son, also the greatest jazz drummer i know of, for his age- uses alot of open grip. i like my teachers professionla view but wateverwork
@2015beast When playing Moeller, for example, an "open" grip can lead to a weak fulcrum, which allows a lot of reactive energy from the rebound to be lost and unused. This, however, is a completely different style. I use both as needed to play certain patterns. You can see me suddenly change grips midstream in some of my other videos. Keep practicing - it sounds like you're on the right track!
@Adamski986 The technique in this video is different than Moeller. I discovered it on my own, so I don't know what it's called. Some people have said it's a "push/pull" triplet. Thanks for watching!
@RobBurtonGuitar Good observation! This technique requires the first note of the triplet to be accented, which is unfortunate when attempting an even roll, but advantageous for playing musical patterns. Check out my "soca" or "cowbell" videos for examples of using it in a musical context.
Actually, I 'm enjoying busting your tom-toms: "Because of a lot of misunderstanding, let me add that each hand is playing continuous triplets, but they are slightly staggered. The result is RLrlrl RLrlrl, etc.. . .." Your sticking method incorporates a 'muscle recovery period' as you complete each triplet, allowing your speed and accounting for the change in attack volume throughout the range of each triplet: no fatigue. If you weren't such a conceited dick I'd have let this sleeping dog lie.
Not to bust your nuggets, but watch Mike Mangini or Matt Smith to see 'how it's done'. Their styles are different enough to invite argument over proper technique, but they are playing with traditional single-stroke sticking and each has been 'certified' by 'WFD' at one time or another as 'the fastest'. You seem capable and educated, but I'd like to see Mangini or Smith compete against you with the same patterning. Novel developments occur in all arts, but you lack both a Drumometer AND a record.
@theoriginalbillholt Additionally, among all of the impressive drummers I've witnessed, something about Johnny Rabb truly stands apart. The guy has an innate gift of 'unique technique' AND his playing is actually entertaining, being musical and not yawn-inducing. It's human nature to have an ego and crave notoriety, which is why videos like yours exist. For reasons I can't adequately explain, life would suck if we didn't have those "Looky what HE can do!" moments like The Bumble's in 'Rudolph'.
@theoriginalbillholt By "traditional" I didn't mean to imply 'traditional' as opposed to 'matched' grip. My point is that each single-stroke of Mangini and Smith was produced with a distinct, singular wrist or arm movement and valued accordingly -- no finger-rolled doubles and no cheater triplets as used in this video. Black is black, white is white. I DO apologize for being so abusive and I DID spend too much time on this. I'm in a bad mood. "You be the best in town 'til the best comes around."
@theoriginalbillholt "Cheater triplets?" The triplets I know are very nice, and would be offended at that comment. I think you owe them an apology. I hope you're in a better mood now!
@theoriginalbillholt This is a different technique, with which you are obviously unfamiliar. To be fair, though, it's very hard for me to tell what Mangini is doing. The WFD videos of his are pretty bad quality, but I'm pretty sure this method is different than his. If you've seen some better quality Mangini videos, please forward them to me. Thanks!
I wouldn't really call that a single stroke man. I would called it a "loosely hold onto a stick and let it flop" stroke. You don't even use your wrists, like at all.
ok, everyone please just shut the fuck up, first of all, drums are a MUSICAL instrument, therefore who gives a flying fuck who's the fastest?! that wont get you gigs and it has nothing to do with music. Secondly, all you guys saying you are faster, just go start a band and then perhaps you will realise that the rest of the world doesnt care about this shit. if you can play a decent grove, complex or simple, it will be far more impressive trust me.
@08mlascelles That's all there really is to say about this, except that the uploader is brimming with arrogance. I am very far out of the loop in terms of the development of the drumming art, but the cadence of this doesn't suggest anything other than multiple hits per stroke -- it's like listening to a blow-out that's still on the rim flapping against the road with each revolution of the wheel. Semantics aside, this unequivocally does NOT qualify as true single-stroke patterning.
@Quackilisush I see on your channel that 8th grade was not that long ago. Everyone thinks these are either swiss triplets, triple strokes, or buzzes, but they're not. Your advice would be fine if I were playing German grip Moeller, but this is different. The fingers and the fulcrum are the key here. Don't let anyone tell you there's only one right way to play, and keep up the good work.
No disrespect at all man, but I would consider these buzz rolls instead of single strokes. If you are serious about improving your single strokes, look into the moeller technique. It helped me so much.
@NathanDawsonYEH That's good advice, but this is an unorthodox way to play singles which is new to most drummers. You might be interested in some of my other videos - there's some Moeller stuff as well as more of this "3 for 1"/ push-pull triplet method.
@karinetex1 It's definitely interesting! I did notice that you were trip-letting on each stroke, that was why I was a little uneasy in the fact that you named them single strokes. I would simply call these triplet rolls if that exist, (clearly it does, I'm referring to the naming of it). I will check out your other stuff! :]
@NathanDawsonYEH Yeah, I'm not sure what they're called. What's ultimately being played is RLrlrl, which is why I consider them single strokes. But I've also been told that this is "cheating."
@karinetex1 Ignore people that claim you're cheating man, everyone has a different way of playing rudiments. When the moeller technique came out, it was heavily frowned upon, until it was demonstrated and explained by Jim Chapin, (I believe he was the one...).
The really astounding figure is that over 177 people have watched this for 1:20 and THEN taken more time to argue about it. Why don't you put down the ruler, pull up your pants and go make a video of your own?!?
@TheMagwe25 If it really is in a book, I'd like to know which one. I'm trying to learn more about this technique. Post it in a comment or send me a private message. Thanks!
look everybody know that you're not playing singles, but its ok if you think you're, Just look at this video and compare it to yours /watch?v=gFGS1uBthO4&feature=related you really think that you're fastest? be honest
@linkinfacu Matt is amazing, and I can't play that fast using that technique. In my video I'm using a different technique. See if you can find a video that demonstrates the technique I use, which is a "3 for 1" type. Also, check out Jojo Mayer or Zac Sullivan using an interlaced "2 for 1." I'm still learning, so send me whatever you find. Thanks!
The 2005 rules explicitly state 'no bounces'.
Interlocked bounces, even if they alternate, thus would have disqualified you in 2005. Of course I can't find the current set of rules, so who knows. You should go to a qualifier for WFD and see how you do.

Actually a very slow press roll. On this basis, I can do 1,300 without trying hard, and I'm not a drummer.

The really astounding figure is that over 177 people have watched this for 1:20 and THEN taken more time to argue about it. Why don't you put down the ruler, pull up your pants and go make a video of your own?!?

Sorry dude, but you must be an idiot. It doesn´t make sense. When you make 1200 single strokes in a minute, let´s talk and erase this post.

mh.. if you like doing your "singles" that much you should go too ah drumming school first where you learn what "single" means (;
but like in your vid thats just FAKED!!

The drummer of my band is doing this while he is sleeping. Seriously, this is not really special.

Dude, I'm a bass player and I can do that just by reading my brother's band books.
TheMagwe25 2 months ago 3
@TheMagwe25 I'm pretty sure this isn't in your brother's books.
karinetex1 2 months ago
@TheMagwe25 If it really is in a book, I'd like to know which one. I'm trying to learn more about this technique. Post it in a comment or send me a private message. Thanks!

look everybody know that you're not playing singles, but its ok if you think you're, Just look at this video and compare it to yours /watch?v=gFGS1uBthO4&feature=related you really think that you're fastest? be honest
linkinfacu 2 months ago 7
@linkinfacu Matt is amazing, and I can't play that fast using that technique. In my video I'm using a different technique. See if you can find a video that demonstrates the technique I use, which is a "3 for 1" type. Also, check out Jojo Mayer or Zac Sullivan using an interlaced "2 for 1." I'm still learning, so send me whatever you find. Thanks!
