If you have problems with palm muting (chucking), I suggest you to mute strings by just squeezing the bar chord, in this case its possible because entire song is in barrre chords, so by squeezing your are muting all the strings cuz point finger touches all the strings, and even if you dont have problems with palm chucking, barre chord chucking is awesome, and required for reggae and other cool rhythmic, great lesson Marty btw! Keep rockin! :)
would love for you to post a lesson for Jack Johnson's NO OTHER WAY. Would love to learn how to play that. Your instructions make playing real easy. Thanks for all your hard work.
tried playing this a few weeks ago and couldn't get the bar chords in at all. Just practice normal chords and you will find that you will just pick it up! Again an epic lesson!
Dude I am a pretty descent guitartist all around but I have to admit that you do something that I can not do at all and that is teach music excellently. It takes another level of skill to be able to teach music and for that I salute you my friend! You have definitly helped me out with plenty of songs and I will always be a fan! Keep on rockin'!
just wanted to say you are the best guitar teacher and i love how you do alot of jack johnson songs because of you i can play along with my favorite artist
if your struggling to barre the chords make sure you use you arm strength to pull your finger against the neck, as well as your finger and thumb tho squezee it.
whenever i slide my fingers to transition between chords, it makes an extremely loud sound that cuts through the notes and sounds terrible. you probably know what im talking about but i dont know what its called. is there anyway to prevent that? like certain strings? or is it just my technique that sucks
@laxball535 Yeah, I think that's called glissando. On steel stringed guitars its basically unavoidable. It's not your technique ;) if you want to minimize it then don't press very hard on the strings when sliding from one chord to the next. just sort of let your fingers slip to the next position.
@laxball535 I use Elixir Nanoweb strings. It seems to reduce that squeaking sound a bit. Or you can use a string Easy Glide or whatever its called.Either a spray or comes in a cotton wadding.Works well and assists sliding up the the frets.Great for beginners too
I always wanted to play that song but I could'nt do the rythm!!! thanks a lot for the D U D UUU D Marty mc fly !!!! you're a great teacher !!!! thank you (I apploligize for my english but french people aren't strong in languages)
@HungryMocha it'll come. just try to flatten your pointer out as much as possible. and i find that if you position your thumb slightly under the curve of the neck, you get more strength behind it. the top strings already get enough strength because they get the tops of your fingers, so this way your thumb helps out the weaker part of your chord, if that makes sense.
Marty u r the man. You have helped my with My playing so much. Never stop doing what u r doing. You have helped so many people learn the guitar. I just want to say thanks.
I think that you've got the rythm a bit wrong. D U D U U U D U is right, but I think there should be a percussive/silent D U when changing chord. At least that's what it sounds like to me when listening to: watch?v=lphghSeOKHU
@hugenoodles lemme give you a tip that might help, it helped me when i "worked it out" - if you struggle with barre chords, make sure that when youre looking down at the strings of your guitar, you can only see the top string - when I was learning, id have the guitar tilted back a little so i could see all 6 strings so i knew where to place fingers. Once you know where to place fingers, tilt the guitar forward so you can only see the top string - youll find you can barre easier without pain.
hey Marty, any chance you could do a lesson on Betterman by John Butler Trio. ive always wanted to be able to play it and i cant find a single lesson on the tube.
