Casaubon wants a submissive, school pupil of a wife who believes and maintains his teachings as superior to any other persons. Everything that we have seen and heard of Casaubon's loneliness and his desire to marry to experience female companionship is merely idealism. Dorthea's ardent want to better herself in terms of academics is nothing but a threat to Casaubon, who is convinced that anything but entire submission to his work is a betrayal. Simplistically, they were doomed from the start.
Casaubon's over-the-top reaction seems to indicate insecurity - a fear that if Dorothea, or his peers, actually saw his work they would realise that it was all an act, his supposed eridition.
Like Pink Floyd pointed out, he has 'plans that either come to naught/ or half a page of scribbled lines.' Well, volumes of notes, but no actual book.
For women, eroticism begins with her mind. Once that is stimulated, all else follows.
However, if her mind alone is stimulated, that becomes a torture. The true capture of her love, is to capture her mind, arouse her body, and ignite her soul. If even one of these is neglected, then you will hurt her. I being a woman of all three understand this this.
I have no sympathy for her she must have known he would be obsessed and dedicated to his fruitless study's instead of making love to her. Talk of poor judgemant and naivity.
the room where Ladislaw and his artist friend are sketching has the Berini marble bust of Innocent X (Pamphilij) and the painting they must be drawing after is by the famous portrait of the same pope by the great 17th century Spanish painter, Diego Velazquez. Those are the only two works in that little room. Both are priceless treasures. Okay so I'm an art geek and such details delight me. Hopefully I don't sound too much like Mr Casaubon the walking audioguide.
WTF did Casabon marry her for if he doesn't even want to make love to her? He doesn't even really enjoy her company. An old fart hiding away a pretty girl. She was stupid like so many of these girls written in this time. She made a judgement before really knowing him. Made assumptions based on wishful thinking and the reality is found lacking. Had she probed deeper before she decided she would have known she was making a huge mistake.
He is mean that Casabon and a pontificating bore and a passive aggressive misoynist whose personal ego and desire for public acclaim is more important. He is so insecure and she is naive, trusting and thinks he can teach her...when he is the truly ignorant one..hell he does not even know how to romance her.
Casaubon may be an intelligent one, but he is not worthy of Dorothea's soul, spirit and sensibility. Thank you for posting all these movies...I am really enjoying them! :)

He needs a kick up the backside. Casabon should be grateful to Dorothea for marrying him.
