Complacency soon settled into the troops. The campaign was taken seriously again, but the Taliban were ahead of them. Simply put it, Afghanistan was of peripheral concern to Rumsfeld.

A soldier named Thomas Wilson asked him (essentially) why he sent them into Iraq without proper equipment (ie-stripping Iraqi junk yards to find "hillbilly armor" to put on their hummers), and Rummy answered "you go to war with the Army you have...not what you might want or wish to have..." A cop out, since they determined when the invasion would take place, but just didn't plan for the aftermath.
