  • Orfeo Negro is one of my favorite tunes and this version played by Barney is one of the best, but I can only enjoy it half way through before they pickup the tempo to get into what I guess was "hip" in the days when this was recorded.

  • I love this, I bought my first Kessel LP in about '73 .

  • A musica que ele inicia chama-se Manhã de Carnaval de Luiz Bonfá do filme Orfeu

  • @MrJuniorviola ...like we didn't knew that...

  • What a prolific player. The Best!!!

  • WHAT A SUDDEN CHANGE OF RYTHM! HE IS A JAZZ GOD!

  • The fast song is Samb De Orphue I Believe. Joe pas and Herb Ellis version is called Carnival. It's on they're Two for the Road album. It is awsome! This is great too, thanks so much fo posting!

  • OMG...a) Kessel is the true gold standard of guitar...b) where do I get a charlie christian pickup...that tone...wonder what it would sound like on an SG....mua ha ha ha!

  • @alexdroogie100 Gibson still makes this pickup on special order! The only thing they changed on it (slightly) is the impedance, making it work better with the powerful amps of today.

  • Does anyone know if there is a studio version of Kessel performing this piece? Beautiful!

  • Here in Brazil this song calls manha de carnaval, black orfeo were real book renamed i don't know why. Orfeo is another song.

No matter name Kessel alread played brazilian acent in 60'

  • @JamilLimabass @JamilLimabass this is a medley of songs from orfeo negro the first of which is manha de carnival(named 'a day in the life of a fool' in english to fit the lyrics) it is followed by the song samba de orfeo, the song the makes the sunrise at the end of the film.

  • jim hall could be tedious and boring at times, a certain lack of rhythm.

  • the first part is just amazing

  • What a superb player! What chords and rhythm. Very enjoyable, thanks.

  • Holy shit! During the time it took to watch this video i determined that barney kessel is the greatest jazz guitar player ever, until the next.

  • Ah love this song + this guitarist = this is a treat! :)

  • Barney Kessel unico e per sempre grande. Grande chiarezza dovuto anche all'uso del suono secco. Basta con gli effetti che usano molti chitarristi di oggi. Ascoltate e riascoltate i grandi del passato.

  • Does anyone know what guitar he's playing? It's got great tone, lush, wall of sound!

    what make is it?

  • See Barney Kessel talks about his guitar .

    That explaines everything.

  • Check out this video, he explains what he's using.

    watch?v=Z4wjpnG91LQ

  • i think it's a gibson L5

  • "La classe !"

  • a-ma-zing!

  • Breath taking!

  • Barney Kessel was the greatest !

  • este tipo esta del tomate

  • barney was it

  • Still the best in this world and in any other one (as sais George Harrison)

    Mo

  • In the middle of this medley, someone is giving Jim Hall smelling salts, since he had to faint at what Kessel is doing. I watch it and come damn near fainting--it is so extraordinary and so far beyond what anyone was doing then--or even now.

  • i dunno...jim hall was probably like...i could have said the exact same thing with half the notes, took a drag from a cigarette and thought of other ways to substitute V13b9 chords. i love barney...but jim just knew what to do and there was no filler! barney knew where he was going but surprised himself with the passing tone runs. jim knows what will be hip three measures before he plays it.

  • You're right. Didn't mean to sound like I was denigrating Hall, just trying to elevate Barney's spontaniety by saying that even another master would be amazed.

  • that is like go somewhere with the map .... no adventure dude

  • i hear what you're saying, but great improvisers basically compose on the spot as opposed to others, who just blow over changes. barney was a king of ballads,a monster in the studio and his sense of texture improv-wise is very interesting.but in my opinion, jim hall said more in less notes.there are merits of both types of playing, but jim is probably the most expressive and MUSICALLY advanced improviser on our instrument.playing fewer notes with intention doesn't indicate a lack of adventure!

  • Okay, well that was just impossible. I saw it but I don't believe it.

  • Hehe, he's pretty amazing...Its not impossible tho...LOOOOOOTS of practice and creativity and listening to guys just like this. A lot of his runs are centered right around the melody with some slights in it. If you listen closely, you can hear some very common or repeated runs in there. Awesome stuff tho. one of my favourites.

  • Great stuff, thanks!!
