Does modern liquid cooling require any kind of maintenance? Is it a closed system that shouldn't need any tampering? What kind of reliability on the cooling system should one expect?

I got liqiud cooling for my CPU and it's all fine.. Every 6 months it is recommended that you change the fluid. Buying liquid by itself is pretty cheap.
