Just curious, wouldn't the mayo/egg mixture soak into the hide quicker if you didn't soak it in water first? How about coating the dry hide with the mayo/egg, then lay it between plastic trash bags, tarp, etc. then put a piece of plywood on top with some extra weight to compress it/keep air out. Just a theory, no offence.
It's the oils in the mayo that tans the hide.. Ultimately you need to coat and saturate each fiber with oils.. so anything that would be almost pure oil would work. Chemicals in the egg helps the oils soak in
If you didnt have access to a ziplock bag, can you just skip that step and move onto the next step? The native Americans didnt have ziplock bags, I assume they moved went to the next step instead? I mean, can you do that? It wont make the result less than how it ends up when you DO let the hide sit in a sealed, airless bag?
@ABrotherOfThor Natives would have put the hide is a bucket/basket and covered it with damp leaves or a damp piece of material. This would serve the same purpose. Of course.. IF the natives had zip-locks.. they probably would have used them :)
@BushcraftOnFire Dang well is there anything I can do to try and prevent this? I don't want to mess it up cause it's my first deer kill, I also feel better about doing it my self. So I don't want to take it to a taxidermy.
Quick question...using this solution on a deer hide won't mess up the fur due to the oil in the mayo will it? thinking about using it on a hide from a doe i took this weekend. Also what about a hide that I salted about a year ago? Will it still soften a hide that's been try that long? Thought about using brains but if this works i'd like to give it a try...
There's oil in brains as well as the mayo.. so I can't see where there's any difference IMO. I, personally, haven't ever noticed stains..but I can't answer definitively. As for a salted hide.. you need to wash the hide to remove the salt.. it is simply a preservative.. after that it can be treated like any other hide. Have fun and let us know how it goes for you!
got so i got a hide... i put it in the right amount of lye solution to take the hair off. but i am useing a file for try to get the muscle off the hide. the twitching muscle that is on the hide when i got it. any info on a way to get off with out all the huff and puff i am going through i have scraped on it for a day now and on got one small area done.
My father has a hide that I'm going to try to tan when I'm home at Christmas. I have a couple more questions if you have time! First, is it possible to complete this process in about two weeks? I was going to try traditional and use brain, but I was planning on using the brain of the deer. I've read on the comments here that this isn't a good idea.. Secondly, do I need to go through the process of drying between fleshing and "curing"? Thanks so much!
Would you use the same amount of eggs and mayo for a bigger hide like a deers? Because I wanted tan my first deer hide but since the size of raw hide you are using here is drastically smaller than the one I will be using I wasn't so sure.
this is a very good video: very helpful. however i was wondering if you could make another vid in which you tanned hides with the fur still on? i tried reading through the comments like you told themusic928 to do but it still made little to no sense to me. i think that seeing it done would be a lot more helpful to me and many other viewers than simply reading text. ty and God bless!
If I get a hide I'll try my friend. However.. there really isn't much I do different.. I simply don't wet it as long.. and I only put the tanning agent on the flesh side.. not the hair side. Other than that I work it the same.
What is the best way to store pelts? I was given 5 antelope pelts that I'd like to tan but OI! doing them all in one day, espescially doing a decent job is a bit daunting. Is there a good way to keep the pelts from rotting so I can use my down time over the next couple weeks to take care of them? I already soaked them in lye for a week (should have asked back then). Would keeping them in lye or just water work?
Easiest is to just dry them.. Then you can rehydrate them later on. Watch that the bugs don't get to them. If you leave them in water.. you need to watch them VERY CAREFULLY that they don't rot.
Thank you very much. One last question. I can't find a video anywhere on youtube on how I'd create thicker leather (such as would be used in old armor or thick straps, not the 'hard as wood' cured bolle stuff) except one that has you soak it in an oak bark mixture for an entire year. Is that really the only option or is there a method that's a little faster?
I don't think you can "make leather thicker." What they would do for heavier pieces (IE: Armor) is to glue pieces of leather together, layered on top of each other to the desired thickness
Nice video. I have tanned several squirrel hides using amonium alum and salt. But I have kind of a strange question: Is it possible to tan/preserve a fish skin? Seriously, I want to try to make an armguard for archery using channel catfish skin. I just think it would look cool. Any ideas? I have never tried it
@misper34 You have to skin the catfish and you have to preserve it with borax if you want it for a mount and fermaldehide on the little bits of skin that you can't preserve but you have to use borax for the skinned if it is skinned properly
PEOPLE WITH FUR PELTS, THIS WILL SLIP FUR. It happened to two of my squirrel pelts. But this is an excellent video for hiding! I haven't seen any soft pelt videos on youtube yet, I suppose I could make one.
im really, really new to hunting so i don't know much, and the thing that drove me to hunt and live wild was jeremiah johnson so sorry if this was a stupid question but how'd you get the hair off the hide?
ive seen brains used even nels naphta soap and neats foot oil combined together but the mayonaise and egg mixture seem to be far more easy of the previous 2. thanks for posting!!
I am trying to tan a rabbit fur, and I am so confused. I know you could help me answer these questions.
1)what do you do with furs? I tried to imitate your actions just excluding dehairing and rubbing heavily on the fur side to try to avoid hair slipping.
2)How do you know how much to flesh off, and how does one determine what is too far? I tried to flesh what i thought was the outer lair, yet it exposed hair roots, so I stopped.
3)Is it okay to use the mayonnaise egg mixture on the fur side?
Dont do anything with the hair side except maybe wash it... If a little mayo gets on that side.. it wont hurt.. but dont put it on the hair purposely... On the flesh side you need to make sure you get all the demis off. Never soak a hide that you want to keep the hair on.

This cow died of natural causes in our neighbor's field. We did not eat it (I am a vegetarian) and it was a week rotten in the field when we found it.
How do you know that the hide is dried out enough that you can stop stretching it? i heard somewhere that as long as the pelt feels cold it is still wet. is this true?

so pretty much i have to use ashes and water right....im making buckskin i cant just let the hide sit in water for about a week and let the bacteria take care of the hair on the hide
aalso once the hide has dried on the rack and ready to be tanned how will i get the large hide into the pot of hot water can i fold the raw hide up to put it in the hot water
Derrick.. a little bit at a time :) You might have to wet it by hand for a bit first.
DO NOT BOIL your hide.. The lye mixture helps remove hair and fat,, and opens the fibers to an extent.. You don't have to do it.. and if you want hair on you can't do it
You don't soak in Very hot water.. more like lukewarm.. maybe about 100 degrees or so. You leave it until it's soft and pliable. I don't mix anything into the water.. It's just to make it workable again
You don't have to use salt to dry the hide. It will dry by itself on the rack.
ty very much brother i also have one more question when i get my hide tomorrow it will be 4 days old my dad is getting it from my cousin....can i juss use hot water or boil the hide in water instead of useing ashes from a fire and water cuz i live in a housing development and they dnt allow fires here or do i have to use wood ashes and water and leave in there for 5 tto 7 days
what i mean in my first reply is what do i add to water to soften the rawhide piece cuz my hide will be fairly large plus how can i fit a large hide into the pot of water and how do i soften the hide that is rawhide what is in the mixture its 55 secs into this video
hello this will be my first deer hide ahaha but after the hide is dried inti raw hide and cut out before i soak and kneat the hide in water what do i mix with the water
so i have a squirrel skin (w/ fur), fleshed, and almost dry in salt, i can just slop mayo on it and knead it in? will thish effect the fur? thanks love the vid
It will work on a hair on hide as well.. but you need to make sure that the hide is saturated with the mixture.. since you are only coating the non hair side!
hey, just one question. What did you do to bring the hide to the state that it was at, at the beginning of the video. I was a bit confused, just because I didn't know if tanning the hide would change it in anyway. Could you just go over the process quickly? Great vid, keep up the great work!
Nice method for Home Tanning every youngster should learn this method First, also Dave, the Mayo is not absolutley nessasary 3 eggs will do the job alone on a hide that size. Great work!
Eggs alone will definitely do the job.. But I have found the oils in the Mayo help as well. And besides.. I like playing in the goop :) Thanks for the comment and support Bro!
Adding the eggs wont hurt, with the amount of egg yolks that are in the Mayonnaise. You can just use plain egg yolks to get the same effect. Glad you mentioned the Oak method, the words Tan and Tanning come from the latin word for Oak Bark (Tannum).
Awesome and timely videos Bro. I just got finished skinning out a 10 pointer my brother-in-law killed. I got the hide from the front legs back. It has a couple of holes in it but this will be a good hide to learn on. When I'm finished I should have enough to make a pouch or two. Looking forward to Tam's pouch video.
another great video! trapping season is about to start, or is in full swing most everywhere in america, and im sure these recent videos you put out will help alot of people have the confidence to give it a try.

Another reason for mayo is that contains vinegar which helps to preserve the skin and the mixture helps to get the collagen ready for tanning.

Dave, yogurt works a lot better than eggs for breaking up tough fibers in meats and hinds.
