'Freedom' is extremely over rated. His portrayal of Katz has the occasional ring of truth [ but the name dropping is insipid] and the decision to call his alt-country band 'Walnut Surprise' [ why not 'Peach Cobbler'?] laughable. The lyrics are worse. Patty is a well developed character and Walter quite believeable until he gets involved in the inane dealings with craven industrialists. It's an easy read and moves swiftly and gracefully at times...but then stalls terribly. A muddle.
Freedom really is a fantastic, breathtaking book. Rarely does a novel live up to the kind of hype Franzen's is receiving, but this one absolutely does. I can't recall a book I've read this whole year that was as simply Good as Freedom.
