I personally hold a pick with three phangers and my thumb is double jointed so my entire thumb grips the pick, anybody else do this?I want to meet somebody else that does this lol.
When you hold your thumb and index finger togheter (just like you're holding a "fake" pick) for playing chords, exactly what part of your fingers does hits the strings in both down and up strokes? Also, do you play with nails or flash? Thanks!
Thanks for posting this Andy. Always thought I must be doing something wrong when I started playing because I never liked the feel or tone when using a pick. This video just confirmed I'm as wrong, or as right, as a lot of others. LOL. Great videos PGS!
Awesome vid and great clips showcasing finger styles (including Andy). Would you consider a vid that showcases different "pick" players, different gauges, players who use coins, etc...
When I first started playing lead, I NEVER used a pick. My dad encouraged me to try it, and now I always use one. But now I'm thinking about going back to using my fingers more.
@slowmonkey156 A useful trick I developed is to tuck the pick under your third finger, freeing up the thumb/index/second finger for picking-it is easy to grab the pick again when needed. you don;t have to do one thing or the other.
@GalaxyHorse Cheers for the tip man! Funnily enough I actually do the same thing, except tucking the pick in my second finger, for when I feel like doing Buddy Guy style double-string stuff or when I'm feeling a little Albert King in my bones. I'd really like to get more into fingerstyle, especially on the acoustic. Peace man keep playing.
One that I'm very surprised you didn't mention and who, I'd guess from his style, Danny Gatton would be very influenced by, is Cliff Gallup - Gene Vincent's guitarist. Cliff used a flat pick with his index and thumb, plucked with his 3rd and 4th fingers and held the Bigsby using his little finger. And it was truly original and innovative!
So who influenced you the most with your technique? Or is it mainly a personal thing you have developed yourself? I have never seen anything like it before, especially when you are playing fast.
How fun I got my own technique too :D I pick in couplets and use octaves... nails and flesh only. I kinda combined Jeff Beck/Andres Segovia/Jimmy Page/Johnny Marr but I mainly take from the old blues greats.
"You don't wanna play like B. B. King. You want to be you. So what you do is listen to players you like, and try to "borrow" a little bit from each guy. You don't try to sound exactly like the other guy, you just add bits to your vocabulary. It's like learning to read or write."-The King.
The scoop is great.Look at what this one has done .Its gotten everyone to comment on there favorite non picker. Andy has been influenced by many of these players ,but how could he mention all of them!! .Everyone has their favs. I didn't know about a few mentioned and have looked into some of them to hear new tunes. Great job Andy and PGS for getting us to think !!
@goodguitaristatmetal For real. Just because a guitarist is famous doesn't mean an unknown player can't be as good or better. I question the divinity of a certain "guitar gods," especially in the midst of educated, practiced, polished musicians.
@goodguitaristatmetal so... guy who can write is more qualified to compare himself to real writers too? I believe Andy has a nice technique, but it's not enough. I guess you know why these people in the video are great players and became famous... They've created masterpieces with their unorthodox right-hand technique
@The4455 The man was not saying he is 'as good as' the players-merely demonstrating alternative picking techniques-options-why are guitar players so neurotic?
@The4455 First off, nowhere did Andy compare himself talentwise to the mentioned guitar players. He merely said "show you some great examples of famous guitarists who share this similar method"
Secondly... You're an idiot, if you think Andy couldn't compare himself to some of the legends of finger playing. Just listen to that small clip from 00:50 - 00:55, not to mention the wide verities of musical genre's that he can pull off.
Third... I'm still looking for YOUR finger picking video...
Thanks PGA crew. Great to see these wonderful pickers side by side. Made me think of Tuck Andress (Tuck & Patti) Saw him play close up and live back in the 90's- he was mesmerising!
Nice. Thing is, most players there play in a different manner than those who use a pick, while Andy can stack his thumb and finger and play exactly as he was holding a pick. It almost sounds like a pick is hitting the strings too. How the hell does he do that?
Andy great article as usual, but what I really enjoyed was your coverage of influential artists - perhaps you could develop upon this in another edition in the Scoop
What about Australia's own virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel! His picking technique is about as good as you can get. And talk about fast - he leaves most shredders in his wake.
@xtort1220 Andy is the man!...If I may, please allow me to suggest a few Metheny albums and songs. First off: "The Pat Metheny Group" album...just go buy it. Songs like 'San Lorenzo, Jaco and Phase Dance will make you an instant fan. Next album, (for me anyway) would be 'Offramp'. Check out 'Are You Going With Me' ,Pat uses an 80's era Roland guitar synth and guitar on the solos. Such a great overall album too. I'll leave the rest up to you to discover. :)
I think U2's the edge should've been mentioned-possibly the most unique way of picking where he holds a blue herdim pick backwards and scrapes the bumpy side across the strings to get that characteristic "ching" sound. He does upstrokes, downstrokes, string hops-you name it. He's a very unique picker who shouldve been mentioned, especially since just about every delay demo andy does he plays a U2 riff.
Thanks for that Andy about your personal right hand fingerpicking technique. I play with my thumb and fingers to. But your finger playing are so inspirational to me!
I still wanna know just how the hell he did Danni California' solos better than the great Frushante himself! XD
I'm learning more about finger picking myself. It just feel better and I'm not just into soloing as much. When see you what guys like Erik Mongrain can do, it beats any kind of fancy soloing any any day IMO. Fingers let you be more intricate and expressive.
That Albert Collins guy sent shivers though me. And of course Jeff Beck is just badass. Why? Because he's Jeff Beck! :D
lol - Andy has a double jointed thumb. Insanely talented - and I feel bad I was so obsessed with 80's shredders back in the day I never really appreciated Mark Knopfler. Time to go buy some Dire Straights......
@jcallseven Malmsteen is nowhere near as clean as Al DiMeola on acoustic. And he can't fingerpick to save his life. Take Malmsteen's pick away and put in a room with Tuck Andress or Paco de Lucia and let's see how good he really is.
This is a perfect example of why it drives me crazy when some idiot comments on someone's video that they should use the pick a certain way, or use their pinky more, or whatever...everyone has their own style and it creates a unique sound. If everyone played the same way, it would all sound the same, and that would suck.
I can never play with my fingers... I just find it waaaay to uncomfortable, especially when I try to play with my fingernails... I'm screwed when it comes to acoustics...
Great video. Love the recognition to under rated greats like Scofield.
I thought it was funny how you didn't even need to say anything for Brian Setzer. Pat Matheny is from another planet. And Danny Gatton is a Rock-a-billy God.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuttttt, I was really hoping to see Roy Buchanan. The sounds he was able to coax out of that '53 Tele were unbelievable. Oh well, the list could go on and on and on........
dude mark knopfler robby kreiger and freddy king are my all-time favorite guitarists. but one other would be jimi hendrix. hes my greatest inspiration then robby then mark. i play with pick but i really want to learn how to play with figers. cause robby and mark are sick as hell. btw. does growing your fingernails out help finger picking?
Thanks, Andy. That was a lot of fun. Great overview of a range of styles. One thing I want to learn is how to switch back and forth between pick and fingerstyle -- that tucking up the pick trick Brian Setzer uses.
Also, Allan Holdsworth uses a pick and the remaining free three fingers simultaneously at times. And don't forget Frank Gambale and his 3-1-3, 2 on direction change, sweeping technique.
I love when Andy's voice-over says: "with the kind of music i'm into, it doesn't really hinder me as far as speed goes." Meanwhile he's WAILING out a monster in the background.
The coolest thing about this video is that it shows players of very different styles, with very different playing approaches. It will make people interested in listening to guys like Wes and Scofield.
Great video, Ive always loved Freddy Kings tunes but didn't realize he used a thumb and finger pick most of the time. I lernt somethin. Good eye Andy. The scoop is major !!!

That lick around 50 seconds was wicked. And at 6:50. You're a badass.
