I view the Spitfire and the Hurricane as being perfect complimentary aircraft during the Battle of Britain.
The Hurricane was tough and sturdy and made an excellent gun platform when going after the bombers - although it did score some notable successes against the Bf 109E4 when flown by a skilled pilot.
The Spitfire Mk1 was the equal overall of the Bf 109E4 - a much needed asset that won the battle.
Great video ... but I have a question because of the painting or camouflage shown here: when both were forming up at 2:05 they turn right and then several sun reflections from the wings can be seen. At wartime did the planes had the same "glossy" painting?
That was the best nine and a half minutes of my day. Excellent video. The close ups at the end were amazing shots. Well done and thanks for a fantastic video to watch.
Most WW2 pilots ive heard in interviews say the Hurricane was the better gun platform and a total all round war machine/workhorse but the Spit was the master of sheer performance...Ive never even been in a plane before but if I had a choice of a go in one i'd go for the Spitfire.Imo the most beautiful plane ever made.
@williamblair11 Personally I would have to admit that the Japanese Mitsibushi Zero was far superior to the Spitfire. The ZER was faster more manouverable, had three times the range and had a kill ration of 12 to 1
@williamblair11 the hurricane was a very good gun platform and far more forgiving in take off and landing with it's wide undercarriage but that is where it's advantages end. The hurricane by 1941 was outclassed purly as a fighter hence why it went to ground attack. the spitfire had far more development potential which was proven wth the amount of different mks that served thoughout the war
The biggest issue for the Merlin engine in these aircraft was the carburetor. It restricted the types of manoeuvers that could be employed. On the other hand, the Bf109 was handicapped by it's leading edge slats which tended to deploy at inopportune moments to interfere with the pilots gunnery. As such it was a tossup as to which was better but if the measure is of lead on target the British fighters were better gun platforms and ultimately had the advantage of being closer to home.
The bf109 was technically superior, the hurricane mentally broke luftwaffer not because of it's superiority but because it was tough. The British pilots loved the hurry because it could take beating and protect the pilots.
The Hurricane could sustain a lot of damage due to being fabric covered, bullets often would pass through the fuselage.

@ObltKG4 i agree, but you try telling die-hard nazis on other vids., that they actually LOST the Battle of Britain!
darkmossie633 1 year ago
@darkmossie633 Their judgement is then clouded by ones fanaticism. They almost won the battle but for the inept or leadership devoid of brains.
