I dont think she was peerless in this role. She had Legge to prop her career. At her time- Lisa della Casa was a great interpreter of the role too and her interpretation is not too be dismissed lightly and she was a greater beauty than ES. Nonetheless ES had a few outstanding potrayals including her Mozart of course!
She looked as beautiful as she sounded! I heard her on stage only once in my life long ago but remember it, great artist who used her voice so well always and lasted.
Scwarzkopf seems to best understand the conversational manner of the monologue. Some fine singers try to make an aria out of it, and oversing every scrap of melody they can find. Only Gwyneth Jones comes close to Schwarzkopf's style. Perhaps she studied the older singer's recordings when preparing the part.
She was a peerless in this role, and a beautiful vision onstage. The entire monologue is a treasure, but particularly the section where one gets a glimpse of her state of mind: "Wie kann denn das geschehen? Wie macht denn das der liebe Gott? Wo ich doch immer die gleiche bin. Und wenn er's schon so machen muss, warum lasst er mich zuschaun dabei mit gar so klarem Sinn?"

I dont know how she does it in this monologue! She gives so many different meanings in each phrase clearly from a musical point of view...
