  • @sowards1989 i don't know much about theory anything...but its like 4/4 for one thing (measure?) and then 3/3 the one after it. so its like 4/4 3/4 4/4 3/4...and as for the "chorus" its the same but just starts on an upbeat and is "inverted"....i think man...no one start hating that i don't know shit..i don't but thats my guess.

  • Has anyone tried to transcribe the subs back from Wingdings?

  • By the way, to anyone ACTUALLY wondering what the meter is, the verses are mostly in 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 2/4, with the chorus in 10/4, 7/4.

    The bridge starting at 2:30 is in 4/4, albeit a VERY jumpy.

    The next part, starting around 4:00 is 7/4.

    Then there's the verse and chorus.

    Great meters, I dig it completely.

  • @loliH9 Radiohead certainly was not the first to experiment with time signatures, and though you don't care about them, some people do. In fact the genre of math rock has been around for some time before OK Computer, which I believe was the first time Radiohead did such experimentation. Please don't turn this comment section into another pointless argument of musical taste.

All music is in some time, whether it be 11/8 or 15/16, it's always in time. Music is the organization of sound and silence. The key word there being ORGANIZED!

  • I had occasion to talk with the guys in Hella. They write their music seriously but don't talk much about how they write it. Very cool dudes, amazingly humble for their skill.

I love math rock, and I have much experience with odd time signatures and the composition of music. 3. if you, clearly a super fan, were to actually look at interviews with them, Zach Hill and Spencer Seim can be quoted multiple times saying they don't know their songs time signatures, they just "bro down" and keep what they like. Thank you for your shit attempt at insulting me.

I didn't say they don't know how to keep tempo, they (Spencer and Zach, as it were) don't know what time signatures (3/4, 4/4, 11/8, etc) their songs are in. They don't sit around and say, alright now 9/8, 12/8... Unless they lied in interview, which they don't seem like they would because they're pretty cool guys, they don't keep track.

  • These guys are amazing. I saw them (when just a two-piece) a few years ago. Zach is a MACHINE on the drums.... played for an hour straight with almost no break and just destroyed shit, including my ego! They are really nice guys too. Very humble.

  • this is originality in its purest form. and the vocals .....well i would say cedric sings falsetto........the singing on 666 is not even singing its like some voice channeled from a distant planet by a kid trapped in a box of chocolate milk. i love TMV and HELLA equally ......they sound nothing alike. but hey....to each his own.....now live in the moment.

    Well, they don't generally keep track of their time signatures, but actually most bands do "sit there and go '1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3....". Generally, Hella takes a more...- I wanna say 'punk'? - approach to math rock, by sort of not caring about the theoretical portion and just doing what they feel. But most bands do know what parts are in what time signature.

  • @Kelavmeister Ok, you're right, I should have said "one of". He's my favorite for sure. Admittedly he could be more dynamically diverse and he can get a bit sloppy sometimes, but those rhythms he plays are incredible. And his footwork is even more impressive when you take into account that he just uses a single kick pedal.

  • @DamionSpoon Oh totally! I mean he's unbelievably creative, and has a mad heel/toe. But I think the sloppiness comes with the genre, and even then I'm still impressed at how consistent he is with the parts he writes.

  • @CheffMLG I'm not saying just that, I know that, but the fact that they always seem to be paying close enough attention to each other that even at times when either of them get a little muddled, or a tiny bit ahead or behind in time, they still follow each other. Their cohesiveness is impressive... Not to say they still aren't innovative, because the way they use odd-times is sick.

  • This is great -- even outstanding -- but the changes the band must make to accommodate the vocals takes it too far away from the insanity of the superior two piece format, in my humble opinion. The guitars suffer the most here, in my opinion. Very standard stuff now.

  • i feel like long time oldschool fans of hella don't liek this album as much, or try to discredit it just because it caught a little bit of commercial attention.

    Like this album put them in more of a mainstream position, being a 5 piece, non-instrumental etcetera it was more approachable for the average person. So they kind of get mad when new fans start coming around to their elite club.

    But really this album lyrically, conceptually, technically musicianship is all a masterpiece.

  • as far as I know, and some wikipedia info- Omar has done two records with Zach Hill, neither released yet... But, knowing Omar, he'll do it in about three years, look at all the stuff with jeremy ward that's a number of years old already. Zach's work on that Damsel record with Nels Cline, by the way, is INCREDIBLE. pretty brilliant. Hella is great, but he gets to explore with the more projects he experiments with...

  • Absolutely! its probably about two years old... its called DAMSEL and it was released on Temporary Residence Limited. Zach Hill on drums, Nels on Guitars and electronics and two other guys-a bass player and another guy on electronics. Its a wicked album. worth getting if your a fan of either of the two big names
