@bullfrog11758 EN LO PERSONAL, SOLO LES PUEDO PLATICAR, QUE VIVÍ DE "LA MÚSICA" CASI TODA MI VIDA, Y ESPECIALMENTE ESTA, MELODÍA EN ESTA VERSIÓN, FUE LA SEGUNDA QUE ME HIZO "VOLTEAR" A VER QUE ERA ESO, TAN MARAVILLOSO, LLAMADO MÚSICA.
A MI NO SOLO ME HACE "LLORAR" SINO, QUE ME "CATAPULTA" A LA MARAVILLOSA PRIMERA DÉCADA DE MI VIDA, Y A TODOS ESOS MARAVILLOSOS RECUERDOS. QUE - - -DIOS- - - LES BENDIGA.
Could Tiomkin write a melody? He'll do (the Academy thought so too; this score won an Oscar). This is one of those tunes that, once heard, stays in one's memory the rest of their life (others might include the theme to Carol Reed's "The Third Man" (1949), by Anton Karas, played on his zither; the theme to Michael Todd's "Around the World In 80 Days" (1956), by Victor Young, for which he won an Oscar posthumously; the list isn't huge, but there are certainly several others...). A definite keeper.
...And here was me thinking, "who is LeRoy Holmes?" VERY glad to have found this. Saw the flick ages ago...the tune stays with you...just had the great fortune of getting the DVD of the film as a gift...one of the best parts is hearing this theme song again.....REALLY enjoyed this version. MAJESTIC!
@bullfrog11758 I think he LIKES it!

I found this record used in 45rpm, didn't know it was also released on 78. This has to be my favorite John Wayne movie.

@scharkalvin - In the UK, 78s continued, alongside 45s, until around January, 1959.

My grandmother used to whistle this all the time. We were going to use it for her funeral but couldn't find it anywhere.

Anyone who grew up in L.A. during the 60's should remember the KHJ "Movie of the week" and its memorable theme song "The high and the mighty".

@bullfrog11758 - It has that effect - particularly this version.

This is one of THOSE records...
YouTube's record-collecting uploaders filled MY wish-list - this is one item in my attempts to give BACK!

My pleasure. A schoolfriend introduced this beautiful record to me. We all have our special favourites - this was his.

A Classic Theme from a classic movie, still brings emotions after all these years.
I retired after 39 years as a pilot, and it's still the #1 song in my heart. Thanks...
